My brother was the Talking Heads fan in our household. As such, my strongest memories of the group are primarily visual: David Byrne in his trademark oversized suits; album cover images, most especially the stark black-and-tan cover of Stop Making Sense; the New Wave theatricality of the concert video espied in passing as I wandered through the living room looking for books. By the time we were old enough to venture out to concerts on our own, the band, while technically still together, was primarily involved in solo projects, due [...]

I know, I know - fifty eight degrees ain't exactly what you'd call cold, but it's July : that's usually in the Summer, no?; and waking up to sub-sixty, simply doesn't seem seasonal, so neither is this ♫ I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm - Billie Holiday Mmm, if only... ---- Fortunately, as the morning's moved along, the sun did put in an appearance, and it's way less chilly now - still a grey old day, but is that so unusual in England? ♫ Nite [...]

Image From Here It's all about putting on the right face. I guess, the point of it all is about saving grace. They wear that face proudly, never fully revealing their inner beliefs. Instead, they hide behind the shield that the face provides. They don't want you to know what is really inside. It's all fake if you ask me. There is no reality to any of it. They go through life so superficially, skimming the surface. Wearing their mask of deceit. And it is so hard to tell what they are feeling [...]

image from here On any given day I will get close to 50 emails related to this blog. The emails come from record labels, promo companies and sometimes directly from various bands. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not complaining here. In fact, I am thankful that they come because I get introduced to what is new out in music land. And that is a good thing. The only problem I do have is the feeling that I am not doing my end of the bargain. Which is, properly reading them and [...]
Remember a few days ago when I said I'd post this week? Well, you're soaking in it! I figured the best way to mark my return was with a giant list determined, as is often my wont, by shuffling the 12,000+ covers on my hard drive and picking the first 20 that came up. Dream Girls "I Can Fly" (Rainey cover, comp. Grady/ Holding/ Pain/ Riley) What better way to begin than with a cover of a song originally featured in the classic film Girls Just Want to [...]
Gal and Lad "Going to Maine" (Mountain Goats cover) A random Google search while cover hunting led me to the MySpace page of the delightful Gal and Lad , where you can download this track along with a few of their popdorable originals. Farrah "It's Different for Girls" (Joe Jackson cover) The dreamy lead singer for Farrah, a UK power pop band, sounds about 15 years old. And I'm okay with that. Bettye LaVette "I Do Not [...]
Enik here, kickin' it in the Pylon this cold cold morning. I'm not the only one. Here's some info from an Associated Press piece I just read: "From Minnesota to New York, some schoolchildren are getting an extra long weekend because of the bitter chill that has spread over the eastern half of the country."

2006 may well go down as the year when everyone became a critic. Thanks to blogging, social networking sites, podcasts and the like, everyone with an opinion had a ready outlet to share it. Trouble is, too often those voices seemed to join together to praise and subsequently condemn the same slate of artists. That's an overly simplified argument to be sure, but every time I would read more fawning praise for the aural equivalent of the emperor's new clothes, it made me treasure all the more those suggestions from bloggers that [...]
In compiling this list, I tried to not overthink it. As I drove home from work, a few clear choices came to mind: "Talk on Indolence" by the Avett Brothers, "Stop Thinking" by the Mysteries of Life, "You Blanks" by Portastatic. Some came to mind as I perused the 2006 playlist in my iTunes library: "Face of a Faith" by Nellie McKay, "Black Sweat" by Prince," the remix of Wolfmother's "Woman."
