Kirby Dominant had already lived the stuff of rap fairytales / nightmares by the time his name began ringing bells up and down the West Coast's '90s underground scene. Reared in the same Bay Area circles that produced the Living Legends and Mystik Journeymen who took the independent rap hustle to its bare essentials – a loud mouth, a pair of sturdy legs, and a backpack full of self-produced cassettes - Kirby sealed his worldwide reputation as a freestyle rap prodigy, world-class battle rapper and impossibly prolific studio rat. Champagne Nightmares is his second collaboration with Canadian producer Factor. They [...]

So I went to Rock the Bells Saturday, it was hot. Besides the fact that that statement could work the two ways I wanted it too, there's something about San Bernardino County in general that usually brings a sepia image of downtrodden industry and smog, not to mention horrendous traffic and douchebags. So when I went to visit San Manuel Theater for the first time in 7 years with this predisposition (last time I was there I was a very young punk kid trying to see the Sex Pistols), I didn't know what to expect. The [...]

Words By Prop Jay Some people see circa 2003 as a dark period that passed through Hip-Hop: The Jansport Era. I gave a chance to the music many people were either oblivious to or quick to dismiss through ignorance. While I can't front and pretend it was the best of times for H.E.R., it was a breath of fresh air from the Shiny Suit era. In fact, some memorable music came out of it and there are quite a few tracks that still get play if I have time to do some reminiscing. Here [...]

It had so much soul and emotion on it, and I would listen to it over and over. They're part of the Living Legends crew now so I think the days of rapping about Top Ramen are over. Before all that though, they used to hustle the tapes outside of Amoeba on Telegraph and pioneered a lot of that fuck-major-label thinking that made the bay area so rad for hip hop in the [...]
