Toby Tobias and Felix Dickson are both pretty talented dj/producers in their own right, hence why they remain at the forefront of whatever the amazing stuff is coming out of the UK at the moment. Sporting one of the best pseudonyms in electronic music today, Tobias and Dickson began collaborating under the guise of The Mythical Beasts in the early '00s, with the release of the track Magical Creature, on which Marcus Marr played guitar . Whilst they've released little to zilch since, the guys are back with a new funky single Communicate. I recommend [...]

Today we begin an exciting new series on 20JFG. Being little more than a shambles of rabid amateurs ourselves, 20JFG has had a long standing obsession with the much maligned genre of Fan Fiction . Being a space on the internet where words are placed in some kind of meaningful order - maybe even ones that people read sometimes - we decided it was time to dredge some of these classic works from the literary ghetto, where they hide from copyright infringements like Phil Collins in Buster . We kick off with 16 year old Marie Gibb's well-meaning speculation on the sexual [...]
We're bringing art back over here, starting today. Let's start by checking out a chap called Alexander Heaton.

LA's Not Not Fun is definitely positioned as the most interesting hub of creative activity in recent times right now. They've 150+ releases under their belt in various formats and just a few years. I've always sensed that Pocahaunted were the main dish (not musically, but spiritually?) and after a short search session it's not shocking to find that the label is run by Amanda Brown (of Pocahaunted) and hubby Britt Brown. Not Not Fun releases "noise, experimental, psych-folk, spazzy/weird/art-damaged no-wavey inspired rock, math rock, noise rock, lo-fi, acoustic, drone [...]

Making their Philadelphia debut, Long Beach, CA's CRYSTAL ANTLERS (Touch & Go) bring their combustible live show to The Barbary on October 26th. With an explosive build-up of noise and melody blended with raw vocals and twisting riffs, this quintet has mastered the art of thrash. Philly's hypnotic, dance-floor-friendly enthusiasts, PINK SKULL (first-ever all ages show!!!), and Kansas City's fine purveyors of dark psych, MYTHICAL BEAST round out the bill. Be sure to knock back a couple of extra Bloody Mary's at brunch and/or an extra six-pack of Kenzinger during the game before [...]

Following a couple of great splits on Not Not Fun, Mythical Beast finally have a full length under their belts. As the fates would have it they've landed on Philly's finest; Language of Stone, for their first album Scales . The band recorded it with Greg Weeks at his LOS headquarters/studio in Philadelphia and to be honest these are some of the strongest Mythical Beast tracks I've heard yet. Still steeped in the darkest recesses of psych's heart, the tracks smolder with scorched earth and the black taste of doom. While atop the slow churn of guitars and the [...]

By FLANNERY CASHILL Last Friday, 25-year-old Erica Peterson was shot in the stomach during a purse-snatching at 17th and McGee. Full details on the crime are here . Peterson has spent the past week in the intensive care unit of Truman Medical Center and has undergone multiple surgeries. Fundraisers are being held to offset the cost of Peterson's treatment and recuperation, including two this weekend. The first, a free show tonight at the Newsroom, includes performances by Visualizer , Mythical Beast , [...]

Thank you Lauren from up the street! You are such a wonderful friend for making a donation to the page, and as I said earlier, I owe you and Nick a lunch at Soy Cafe. Thank you Michael from Brooklyn! You are one of the good guys, and good guys always win at life while bad guys always lose. I feel like with another two or three good-sized donations, I'll be within shouting distance of my goal. There are six days left to donate. If you have not already, please do, dear readers. Why? My roommates are moving out and [...]

I picked up The Mythical Beast/ Pocahaunted 12" having been familiar with Pocahaunted's work and ended up being much delighted with what I heard from Mythical Beast; creating dark, atmospheric soul channeling psycho-drones, the band pulses with restless energy. The dark throbbing drones give way to restrained feedback and touches of spacey keys, but the real focus as with their compatriots Pocahaunted, is the wailing, urgent female vocals that seem to tear at your soul's bearings. For the lucky few who ordered the 12" right away, an extra cassette was included featuring another split from the two bands. The splits [...]
