Gig Of The Week: Nadja / Piano Magic @ Barden's Boudoir Barden's is very much the place to be towards the end of this week. Friday sees the exceptional Piano Magic play, presumably in support of the fantastic Dark Horses EP that surfaced late last year. It could be a while until we see this enigmatic group again so make the most of the opportunity. On the door tickets will set you back £6. Then on Sunday Canadians Nadja bring their incredible decibel levels to the club - and boy did [...]

Hey, I just remembered something I learned in college! Wild, right? My 20th Century Media course taught me all about "synergy." When corporations try to consolidate their power in a given industry by merging or acquiring other corporations, they hope to benefit financially by controlling the 13 power roles that make up a given form of mass media. For example, when Sumner Redstone and Viacom owned Blockbuster Inc., Viacom controlled the producer and distributor/exhibitor roles, and the consolidation of power benefited the company financially because stores could stock more Viacom-related films (Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks, MTV Films, et al.). [...]
*Hanging out at the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern this past Saturday night for the Wussy, Unsparing Sea, and Good Touch Bad Touch show, and people were still talking about all the sh*t which went down during the Black Lips show earlier in the week. Let's just say, the truth as to what really happened is much closer to the anano comment in my original post than the official explanation from the band's management. Still, I'm torn about how I feel about all this fan/band interaction. Look, I'm all for a good [...]

What do you get when you combine the low-end doom rumble of Sunn O))) with soaring digital washes a la Fennesz? A duo from Toronto covering a song that no band would dare touch. Turns out Nadja know there way around sound sculpting, and have loads of critically acclaimed releases as evidence. This cover redefines "fuzzy", and it's even more saturated then its original. But the real payoff here is how Nadja make "Only Shallow" sound less like a cover and more like a slow-motion implosion of sound. [...]
Ohhh, this is shoegaze after its been soaking in drone; Jesus, this is a beautiful track! Nadja never ceases to amaze me, and on this cover of "Only Shallow" by the legendary My Bloody Valentine (for the upcoming Nadja covers release) they are melding their own savory atmospheric drone/doom personality to the MBV Loveless opener [...]
I am one of very few that thinks U2 really isn't that great, other than The Joshua Tree and a few other random songs. The fact that Rolling Stone gave the new release five stars pretty much guarantees I won't like it. But Neko Case ... ohhh Neko Case. If only you were ten years younger. Anyway, you already know I like her new album , so there's that. Wild Light 's debut is catchy, but I bet the feeling won't last long. We shall [...]

'useful' is an underused word. "So I shall, instead, keep this review extremely short and state simply that RADIANCE OF SHADOWS contains some of the most shattering and emotionally exhausting music ever laid down, and that its incredible usefulness lies in the fact that – however tiring your day was – listening properly to music of such extraordinary intensity brings to their knees those listeners who are still standing upright, turns those who are seated into ritually slaughtered and slouching bogmen, and delivers those already recumbent straight to the Land of Nod." said Julian Cope . [...]

I know I should've let that Lubomyr Melnyk post simmer a while but I just saw this and couldn't help but post about it. Aidan Baker (of Nadja, who knew who I was when I met him) and Tim Hecker (of...Tim Hecker) have made what I can only assume is sweet, sweet music together and they called it Fantasma Parastasie . It comes out on October 14th via Alien8 and it's streaming in full right now . Wow. I am ridiculously excited right now. Hooray for collaborations!!

I'm back in Los Angeles now, sitting on Nicci's couch, watching her create her own Nintendo Wii character. It's been a relatively uneventful twenty-four hours since I've returned. I woke up and went to work today -- apparently my boss found his way onto my Facebook profile, so it's only a matter of time he stumbles across this here website and loses the last shred of respect for me that was left after viewing all my Facebook photo albums. Expect a notice of unemployment here any day now. By the way, I received a very handsome $25 donation [...]
One year ago this week I left the East Coast for Los Angeles. It is weird to think that I have not returned home since then, not in a homesick way, but in a "Huh. I wonder what changes I would find in the city or my hometown" way. For as long as I can recall, I have been prone to daydreaming. During these past twelve months, I have often caught myself trying to picture the drives to various places I used to frequent when I was living at home. I ponder landmarks that were used to use to calculate [...]

Nadja seem to have emptied their hard drive onto CD's, sent them out, and gotten signed to 10 labels simultaneously. By the end of 2008, they will have put out 15 releases in two years. That's too much. But it's about right if you consider each album as a song. Make one long ambient fuzzfest, divide it into tracks, call it an album - next! At Pitchfork, I've reviewed two recent Nadja reissues, Skin Turns to Glass and Bliss Torn from Emptiness . (The artwork for the latter is [...]

Newsflash. I am neither distinguished nor a gourmand. I am lacking in both success and authority. I do not command great respect. I am afraid of eating. In fact, before 2008, I'm pretty sure the last time I even consumed 1,000 calories in one day was when I was in high school. Food, for me, is a chore. It's not something that I derive any great pleasure from. It's a frustrating and oftentimes angering routine that most normal folks perform at least once daily. Which is why I'm going to start reviewing all the restaurants I eat at [...]
by beatmasterspeech (LA) I'd like to use the word solid to describe two things: 1.) my shit 2.) my upcoming show list. This week is a real doozie... ok, enough of that crap... alright, for real now. Good thing I get paid this week because I'm gearing up for a geek out on merch at the following shows. Thursday is a double header for you fellow Angelenos. If you haven't heard by now, Clutch are going to be throwing down their Marlyand swamp stomp at the Henry Fonda Theater OR save [...]
by crustcake gerf (NYC) It's no secret that we dig The Sword . It's also no secret that the band's sophomore album drops on April Fools' Day. The album, Gods of the Earth , is no sophomore slump-- the band has taken their signature proto-metal sound and honed it into an album so badass that its 40-some minutes fly by in what seems like half the time. The band will be heading to the UK for a few dates with Saviours and Black Cobra before heading back [...]

by Black Bubblegum DOWNLOAD: Nadja - Base Fluid from "Base Fluid EP" (MP3) DOWNLOAD: Nadja - Numb from "Base Fluid EP" (MP3) Looks like Aiden Baker & his experimental-ambient-doom project Nadja might be inching their way out of the CD-R business (but probably not) ..... Nadja is set to release two revamped versions of previous CD-R releases via two different labels in the next few months. The first, "Bliss Torn From Emptiness" is [...]

Image credit: Robert Gendler In the sixth instalment of this series I actually promised it would be the last. For a while now however I've been feeling the urge to post some serious star-gazing psychedelic rock and drones again. So this marks the rebirth of the series and I have some really awesome stuff lying around for a handful of new instalments. First up is a selection of heavy grooving and hypnotizing monsters to get back into the rhythm again. This is the 1st heavy-artillery regiment recalibrating your psyche so you'd better [...]
