L.A. indiepop boys Names Of Stars recently touched base with me. Although the sound is a little mainstream, there is something infinitely catchy about the band's debut long player. Although I receive 101 promos in a similar vein, the mix of jangly guitars and crisp vocals are sitting nicely with my Sunday afternoon. Will it become one of my classic albums of the year? Very doubtful, but it's pleasant enough not to be confined to my trash folder. Visit the band's Myspace page for more details. [...]

Mother Nature is one crazy woman. On Friday I was complaining about the pollen situation where I'm at, but that pales in comparison to the havoc that the Icelandic Volcano has caused globally. We're on our fourth day of flights being cancelled, choas being caused, and people being stuck in places they don't want to be. On Friday there was a story saying that over 17,000 flights were cancelled as a result of the ash. That's a massive amount of flights that's going to cost the airline industry tens (if not hundreds) of millions of dollars. And there's [...]

Earlier this year, we introduced you to the LA foursome Names of Stars , by way of their sweet-hearted indie-pop jam, "Siren". We dug it, and if you did too-and happen to be out in the Los Angeles area this weekend-get thee to the House of Petro Zillia on Saturday, April 10. That's tomorrow. The show starts at 9pm and RSVP is required, so send yours along ASAP . As the invite states, "Music will be played/ Poisons will be served/ Parties will follow". If we weren't stuck in New York, The City That Can't Decide [...]

Comparisons will be drawn to Phoenix after you hear Names Of Stars' "What Is This Place?"––from vocal inflections to production tone to intricately woven, bubbly guitar lines, there are many similarities to the breakout French band's style. Names Of Stars hail from L.A. and are currently unsigned, but their production skills, artwork and self-publicizing chops suggest this will probably not be the case for long. Track of the Week : RAAAAAAAANDY - "AAAAAAAANGRY" ; In the lead up to the movie Funny People we were treated to a new character named RAAAAAAAANDY (with 8 A's) played by Aziz Ansari. By most accounts this character and his 10-total minutes of screen time was the best thing about the whole movie (I disagree) and anyone that's seen the end of Aziz' new comedy special knows how funny this shit can be. Well Aziz is making a mixtape for RAAAAAAAANDY with Dave Sitek producing and the first tune [...]

Names Of Stars are an LA-based foursome that really make you work for a chorus. Bad thing? Nah. Great thing. Consider the sweet spot that unfolds at the heart of "Siren," mpfree from their forthcoming debut LP: it's simple, insistent and galvanizing all at once. What initially appears to be a straight-ahead indie rock plod becomes a jam that's completely and totally open with you. Cherish the song that turns itself inside-out and back again, dudes.
