I was thinking this morning that I never did do a "Best of..." list for either 2009 or 2010. It's a bit of a daunting task the way I do it, but in anticipation of doing that, I put together a list of 25 songs from last year that I really enjoyed, and I figured I might as well share that, six months late be damned. The rankings are rough at best, but give a general idea, and it'll be a nice preview for the album list if I ever get around to that. Because this is gonna [...]

2010 was quite a year. It saw graduations, festivals, a move from Athens to Barcelona, the discovery of a new city, a slight, um, slowing down of our blog activity, a World Cup, many flights (17 for me), and a lot of great music. So, without further ado, we present to you: So, how did we compile this rather fantastic list, you ask? Easy, we consulted our trusty last.fm profiles (see the bottom of this page for our individual profiles). We then each chose our top 25 and [...]
One of the best records of 2010 that it seems no one has heard is Nana Grizol's Ruth. With equal parts of the Weakerthans, the Mountain Goats and a splash of Neutral Milk Hotel, track one "Cynicism" crafts the indictment of all the broken-hearted, or half broken-hearted, or those who thought High Fidelity spoke to them on some intimate level. You got run over, you say. That doesn't make you

The winner of this race was a foregone conclusion from the moment back in February or March when I heard the first chords of the first song off Frog Eyes new album and despite an onslaught of wonderful music throughout the spring and summer of 2010, nothing could displace the power of "A Flower in a Glove." But this was a truly magical year for music, at least through September, when the string of excellent releases shrivelled up in the disappointment of the latest by Sufjan Stevens and Belle & Sebastian (and very few of the songs on [...]

Athens, Georgia's Nana Grizol are relatively new, but that doesn't stop them from producing exceptionally well-crafted music. The band, which includes members of Elf Power, Music Tapes and Neutral Milk Hotel, have put together a wonderful album in the form of their latest release Ruth , a collection of revved up melodic punk, intricate arrangements and ripping guitars. Nana Grizol will be playing at The Triple on Sunday, May 23 with The Milkstains and KC Quilty before flying over to Barcelona to perform in the Primavera Sound Festival, [...]
By Erik Stefan Nana, I thought I knew ya… After one night in the dingy confines of Chicago's Metro, I quickly lumped Nana Grizol on the pile of Elephant 6 power-pop bands á la Apples in Stereo. By no stretch a bad thing, but there are a lot of great bands on that heap. Nana Grizol [...]

Atlas Sound, Black Lips, Circulatory System and Nana Grizol are going to Barcelona
For some reason I never got around to writing about Nana Grizol's new album Ruth. It's not because it's not a fantastically fun record, but just because I am a complete space cadet sometimes. So here's my attempt to rectify that wrong by showing some love to Ruth. MP3: Nana Grizol - Blackbox Nana Grizol's album [...]

Free at last, free at last. My hellish work schedule is over for the moment and I have time -- just a little bit of time -- to put up a proper new music post. Of course, I feel like I haven't given nearly enough due to all the great albums that have either come out already this year or are coming out soon. I really wish I had the time to go into each in detail but for now, these are the albums you should be listening to if you want to listen to good music. Some are available [...]

Photo courtesy I don't think every one who visits here know this but I used to hold monthly mixtapes (Hardcore Mixtapes). But, since the whole process took a lot of time (all the sorting, ranking so forth), I resorted to weekly, shorter versions of it. Now, I'm returning with my monthly mixtapes and I'm putting in the more recent tracks of January that seemed to rise above the rest. I'm planning on changing the individual files into podcasts next month until I find a suitable podcast program for non-Mac pcs like mine. [...]

It was a crowded bill for a Sunday at Satyricon , with four bands playing to an audience that seemed to steadily grow over the course of the night. Along with the number of those in attendance, the quality of music was also on a steady upward crawl as the event wore on. The smell of the venue, the graffiti-laden walls and, of course, the all-ages atmosphere all harkened back to days of high school punk shows, smoking weed in an alley behind the local pizza shop and making out with your spikey haired boyfriend [...]
I had a leftover post from the end of last year and unfortunately I'm way too busy this week to write anything else new, so you're getting this, which is a list of the #1 songs on the Vague Space weekly charts in 2009.p I've actually kept a spreadsheet of all my top songs of the week every week since March 27, 2004, when Modest Mouse's "Float On" was the first #1 of my iPod era.p And in the near six years since, somewhat unsurprisingly, a single band has dominated the top of my weekly charts.p Sunset Rubdown [...]

Kicking off the first big week of album releases in 2010, we have Vampire Weekend's highly anticipated sophomore record, Contra . From my few listens, the band still retains that signature African sound from their debut. But, I've never been too high on these guys in the first place, so maybe a more keen listener will notice any new flourishes with this one. Also out this week is Owen Pallett's Heartland , which sees the singer/songwriter disposing of his long-time Final Fantasy moniker. I think this change should have [...]

image source Nana Grizol - "Cynicism" "My daughter will lead us in grace," he said it nervously, the way you warn someone before they go into an occupied bathroom. The room went silent and everyone joined hands, some reluctantly and some calm. Some looked down at the slope of the buttons on their shirt, others at the napkins. One woman cast her hair back like she was putting her face under the shower spray. Someone cleared their throat into [...]
