Rapping With Paul White by Paul White "We don't know where we're going but we sure make a lot of noise getting there!" - so goes the tongue-in-cheek opening to Rapping With Paul White, the gifted South Londoner's first full-length vocal project. It's another left turn after last year's intriguing Paul White & The Purple Brain excursion into prog and psych-rock and deserves to establish its mastermind as one of the most versatile and individual producers working today. Stones Throw artist Guilty Simpson appears twice, [...]

I cringed when I was asked to put together a list of my 10 favorite albums from the past decade. My shortlist had nearly four times that many. How could I possibly narrow it down? So instead of going through that torturous weeding out process, I decided to compile a list of ten records that I feel didn't get the attention they deserved.
Finally, I've got round to compiling my albums of 2009. I've got a top 20. Not a top 10 because there's always more than ten records I'd like to mention. Not a top 30 or 50 because there seems little point in grading anything any further. Basically, ten albums I ...

Canopy
Just when you thought she couldn't get much more stripped down, Nancy Elizabeth does exactly that. Her 2007 album Battle and Victory was a beautiful, minimal affair, but one garnished with a host of exotic instrumentation. For the follow-up, Wrought Iron, the Wigan-raised, Manchester-based singer songwriter has cut away all ...

So I am not one for actually "celebrating" whatever holiday it is. I guess I am either complacent or I just don't care, wait... No seriously, I might be more of a "Hey, it's a long weekend" instead of a "Hey, I'm excited to be able to have the time to get together with my family and friends and celebrate "X" because this anniversary of the occasion has deep meaning to me" type of guy. So, yeah, whatever. I can be thankful for a long weekend though as that is always better than not having a long weekend. [...]

Zoos of Berlin - Detroit quartet Zoos of Berlin may only have one full-length album under their belt - Taxis - but they have the sound of a band with much more maturity and experience. Their brand of indie rock has an almost elegant, stately feel to it - incorporating elements of jazz, soul, and classic pop - though the band is more than willing to up the tempo and volume when the occasion calls for it. The boys have a solid debut on their hands that they recorded, produced and released themselves [...]

Nancy Elizabeth's Battle and Victory was one of my favourite albums of 2008. Therefore I was delighted to hear she was providing vocals on Susumu Yokota's new album Mother . As well as Elizabeth, vocal duties are taken on by Caroline Ross, Brothko, and Anna Bronsted. Plus Caspe Clausen from Efterklang is on the record too. I didn't deliberately time the creation of this blog to coincide with the Jewish New Year, a day of celebration and renewal ordinarily commemorated through consumption of apples and honey in hopes of a sweet new year to come. Indeed, given the odd lunar cycle of the Jewish calendar, it is purely coincidental that we find ourselves here today, once again looking back and looking forward , in the midst of a more spiritual mandate to do the same. Problematically, however, I said it all pretty clearly back at the six-month mark. [...]

This was the phrase that struck whilst reading an editorial by Lenny Kaye. Is it often edifying to know what someone else listens to. I certainly make assumptions about people based on their listening habits. But is Lenny right? And if so do we come to define ourselves through music. I am always perplexed by those stories from people who say 'that song got me through my teens/divorce/hard time' etc. How can a song do that? Unless we take a message from it and act upon that message or receive comfort/guidance. And are there really songs that do [...]

Music bloggers are always leaving bands in their wake like abandoned teddybears, as they forge ahead looking for the next band before discarding them once again for something more shiny and new. Personally, I try not to forget to investigate the promise I heard in a couple of MP3s but on this occasion I completely forgot. So this serves as my reminder and also a strong recommendation for you guys. Nancy Elizabeth is a 23 year old Manchester based singer and instrumentalist who mixes folk and post rock influences who I featured back in early October . [...]
Here's a whole pile of good stuff to sort through. 1) There is a new, self titled, This Will Destroy You album coming out in early 08 and lets just say I have a "feeling" that it's going to be really really good. Here's a song from it called "Threads". This Will Destroy You - Threads buy it here (eventually) 2) That Sea Wolf album has been digging its teeth deeper into my brain with every listen, especially the [...]
