Naomi Punk might have had all the mod cons of the C21st studio set-up at her disposal but we're very glad that the nomad in her chose instead to record this fantastically rousing, trance-like rural hymn with a classroom of hustling and bustling Rwandan schoolkids on their break. There's an impossibly bewitched and gliding passion that Ms Punk has unearthed from those excitable rascals which we wish went on for much longer than the two minutes we're treated to. Naomi Punk I just can't get enough of this uplifting little ditty. Apparently recorded in a rural Rwandan village among local kids by the artists mom, this is a masterfully lo-fi-ed and sound-manipulated capturing of gorgeously innocent native chanting. Hopefully that doesn't come off like too much of a smug colonial-reeking statement, hmmm but on the other hand isn't most of "world music""afro beat" at its' core yet another thinly veiled manifestation of smug colonialism?
