Naomi Shelton and The Gospel Queens - "What Have You Done, My Brother?" Not much time to write, but wanted to whack this up to keep to my new year's "once a week, minimum" posting resolution. Fortunately, this track from Alabama-born gospel veteran Naomi Shelton speaks rousingly for itself- and the pedigree of the artists involved, some of whom performed in the early days with James Brown and Wilson Pickett, is fully evident. Daptone Records have signed her/them, and the What have you [...]
Our Record Store Day 2010 Label Showcase — The Daptone Week —continues today with Mikey "Custodian of Soul." Mikey's the drummer for Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens as well as a Daptone Soul DJ. When I was asked to pick my two favorite record stores about 15 from the New York area came to mind. Instead of taking the easy route I decided to pick one store for the home team, and [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours On the streets surrounding Spinner's New York HQ, hundreds of bands are swarming showcases, free shows and day parties, which can only mean one thing: The 2009 CMJ festival is upon us. The annual music marathon, now in its 29th year, features upcoming and established bands from around the globe and has long been heralded as a springboard to music stardom. Feeling a little overwhelmed at the idea of so many bands with so little time? We've got you covered. Whether you're in town for the [...]

I took close to six months off of doing my podcast. Since then, SO MUCH good music has come out, that before I can do a show comprised of new music, I have to catch up on that period of time. This is the first of three shows recapping from February until now. If this show is pretty much your only new music source, you're in for a BIG treat, this is the best of the best. If you twitter the e-blogs, you'll know most of this, it'll be like the Greatest Hits of 2009 (thus far). Word! [...]
Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens are based in Brooklyn and are a part of the Daptones Records family of bands including Sharon Jones, The Budos Band and the Menahan Street Band. Disco [...]

Ryan (StopMe): I've spent every minute I could spare this weekend either watching Wimbledon, watching Glastonbury or indulging in the odd glass of ice-cold Pimms. From my armchair, the highlights of the festival seemed to be every second of Florence & The Machine's set , Springsteen's surprise appearance with The Gaslight Anthem , Lady Gaga's smashed-mirror-dress-Glam-Pop- extravaganza and Dizzee Rascal sending the crowd literally 'Bonkers' . There probably aren't many bands that would think of writing a delightful Pop-Folk song touching on the subject of cum (Except maybe The Hidden [...]
It has been one hell of a crazy last couple of days, eh? Time to unwind with the beats you need to chill/party/rock the house with. A good selection - a couple of '80s classics by Herbie Hancock & M+M given the re-edit treatment by two of my faves, Dave Wrangler & Sir Billy. Alan Wilkis delivers a slice of prime Minneapolis sound funk. The Herbaliser Band are straight up live killer funk. The 18

As you may, or may not, have noticed I've been a little derelict in my " Drake's Take " updates lately, so I'm devoting this weekend to playing a little catchup. Here's the first of a few backlogged entries. -ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 05.26.09 For a holiday-shortened week, there's no lack of quality in the releases department. This week, in fact, features my two most listened to albums from the past two months, in Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest and Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus [...]

The legendary Daptone has done it again with the release of debut album, What Have You Done, My Brother? from not-even-close-to-newcomer Naomi Shelton and her Gospel Queens. From the Dap site: "Naomi Shelton is no ordinary gospel singer. Though she, like many others, grew up singing with her sisters in their Alabama church, she has also spent much of her life in the soul clubs around New York, and her 45s, "41st St. Breakdown" and "Wind Your Clock" b/w "Talking 'Bout a Good Thing," have long been revered and prized by funk [...]

( pic via ) More straight-up gospel than last week's , except where it isn't. It keeps an eye on the afterlife, there's the whiff of a narrative... though I wouldn't pay too much attention to themes or stories as I liberally appropriated any directional intent for the cause. (The Staples' classic is now, of course, about nothing but Chevrolet automobiles.) Not much in the way of brimstone, though it's hard not to admire Reverend Nix' bald contempt for his congregation. Of the belters in these 80 minutes - Coates, Mahalia, that [...]
