Juba homme ehk siis järelikult reedel toimub Tallinna kinos Sõprus midagi erakordset - üheks Tallinn Music Weeki showcase'iks on jõud ühendanud kontserdisari Odessa Pop , Londoni plaadifirma Brainlove ja Londonis, Reykjavikis ning Kopenhaagenis tegutsev muusikaagentuur Projekta, et tuua lavale muljetavaldav valik külmavärinaid tekitavat muusikat. Reedel, 30. märtsil 2012 astuvad kinos „Sõprus“ (Vana-Posti 8) kolme seltskonna ühisel showcase’il üles mitmekihilist muusikat loov ektsentrik Napoleon IIIrd trioga, tumedat alternatiivpoppi mängiv sooloartist Mat Riviere ja post - punk ’i mõjudega energiline laivbänd Tall Stories - kõik Inglismaalt. This week's This Music Wins show plays host to the luscious, operatic art rock of Wild Beasts' latest "Albatross", from their upcoming third album "Smother", a down-tempo acoustic demo which has surfaced from Fleet Foxes' lead singer Robin Pecknold, and a song from one of my selections for the Glastonbury 2011 Emerging Talent Competition long-list, Napoleon IIIrd. Also songs from the upcoming album from Meric Long's The Dodos, 'Civilian' from Wye Oak's stunning eponymous album, and a track from the newly announced Little Red Riding Hood Soundtrack from brooding ex-Knife member Fever Ray, with her viking-like overtones of bad-trip electronica. So, I spent the morning tidying up my desk and the office, and I now think I know why tidy people are tidy: it makes you feel enormously efficient, without ever actually having to accomplish anything ! Sly, skiving bastards! It's like people making a great outward show of their piety, whilst generally acting like judgmental, ungenerous bigots. Never trust tidy people, they are just trying to mask their ineffectiveness - there's a new axiom to live by! Also, in today's bone-headed news update of the week, apparently Edinburgh legend Withered Hand is being denied his visa [...]
Our first foray into a 'full live band' situation comes in fine style from one of 20102s most critically acclaimed underground success stories. The follow up to 20072s debut In Debt To , Christiana saw Napoleon IIIrd push the boundaries of pop music to the next level - as our reviewer so rightly said: "[Napoloeon IIIrd] holds the extraordinary ability to make challenging music unchallenging." Featuring "delirious moments of profanity, [creating] an intense and bewildering mass of energy in its wake". We shot this film during Napoleon IIIrd's triumphant performance at Hoxton Hall [...]

Click on any image to enlarge | All photographs by Sonny Malhotra It has been a crazy few months for Napoleon IIIrd ’s James Mabbett. Having released his debut album, Christiania , only a few weeks ago the Yorkshire-born artist has already toured the length and breadth of the country and tonight sees him transform from a one-man electronica band into a live instrument-playing six-piece. Borrowing drummers from AKDK , horns from Stairs to Korea and Internet Forever, and keys from DreamTrak , Napoleon IIIrd is [...]

There are a handful of musicians in this country that push the boundaries of sound and style, take a refreshing step away from conformity and make us question what really constitutes a song. They make us ask whether we can draw a line between ‘sound’ and ‘music’. Napoleon IIIrd is one of those musicians. He’s also a genius, as sophomore album Christiania proves. Yorkshire born James Mabbett doesn’t let his experimentalism interrupt his penchant for writing brilliant pop songs. Neither does he pay heed to the silent rules and regulations of [...]

In the five and a half years this site has been meandering along the number of music blogs has mushroomed. Dozens pop up every day adding to the thousands already whacking up the latest MP3 to Rapidshare. What hasn't increased any where near as rapidly are the blogs willing to do more than just shove up an MP32s with a line of text. Stumbling across a blogger who actually creates, who brings knowledge and passion to their musical signposts is a rare and wonderful thing. As such I have to draw overdue attention to the fabulous interview come musical [...]

One of the ways in which In The City wins hands down against other multi gig urban festivals is in terms of ease and convenience. All of the venues are within a stone’s throw of each other and attendance numbers are such that there didn’t appear to be any queues to get into any shows, meaning that gig-hopping was incredibly simple. A lunchtime start welcomed a Brilliant Artists Booking Agency showcase at the Night & Day Café – a venue that [...]

Mat Riviere Having kicked things off in Cardiff, CAMP Basement tonight is the second stop along the bus route that is BRNLV Records 2010 Tour. Up first is the ever-intense Mat Riviere : lurching half bent on the floor a stream of esoteric lyrics splutter out over his incredible array of noise, gadgetry and instruments. A certain ferocity seems to overcome this quiet natured Norwich based artist the moment his trembling lips reach the microphone, only to be hushed by rare moments of uncanny silence ushered in by delicate keys. These are only momentary states [...]

One tasty treat that was waiting for me when I returned from holiday a couple of weeks ago was a new song from Napoleon IIIrd. I've hugely enjoyed this oddball Leeds artist's willfully eclectic output in the past, and this new tune is a appetite-whetting sampler for his second full-length ...

It's BRNLV Tour Week here on TLOBF, and we have each member of that tour being interviewed by their friends. Today we've got the lovely Lone Wolf firing questions at his mate Napoleon IIIrd . Napoleon IIIrd releases new album 'Christiania', free download single, 2010 tour Holmfirth's own Napoleon IIIrd ( aka James Mabbett ) has unveiled the title and cover of his brilliant new album.
