Nathan Bell's album Black Crow Blue is one of those records that has an almost cinematic, widescreen feel whilst retaining a lovely, honest intimacy through its literate, considered lyrics and gently strummed acoustics. There are stories, laments and learning here - almost in equal measure - in songs to be listened to, absorbed and understood. For to do so will surely make you a smarter and wiser person. Black Crow Blue has been out since the summer. Buy the album from CD baby here . Download Nathan [...]

I'm a little intimidated by Nathan Bell . He's had a long musical history (records released by Flying Fish - where I worked briefly years ago), his a father is a renowned poet, he writes seriously deep songs, and just exudes many of the elements of the artist's life. It these elements or facets of character that I am missing most in my daily grind writing about music that touches me. But this is the only way I know how to at least capture a bit of that spirit. Nathan Bell has been gone [...]

MP3: Nathan Bell - Moonsblood from Nathan Bell @ 2640 (2008) Nathan Bell probably needs no introduction, particularly to those of you familiar with Baltimore music. In recent years this elder statesmen of Baltimore music (one-time bass player for Lungfish) has come to prominence for his transcendent instrumental expeditions on banjo, as well as his Human Bell project with Arbouretum's Dave Heumann. Bell explains the appeal of solely instrumental compositions simply: it's all about "room." He laments that vocals can [...]

Nathan Bell - Moonsblood I must be on a Lungfish member solo album kick or something (see Zomes ). The weird thing is, I've never really listened to Lungfish. I've heard them in passing but I don't have any of their albums. And I kinda don't think I could possibly like Lungfish as much as I like these solo "side projects." Nathan Bell is the bassist for Lungfish, but @2640 [...]

Perhaps it stems from my love of all things Kermit the Frog, but I do love me some banjo. With that in mind, it's probably no surprise that I dig Nathan Bell's @2640 EP. It's being distributed by West Main Development, a Baltimore label specializing in live recordings and one-time collaborations, with a penchant for tapping Lungfish members (a previous release features Dan Higgs). The label's latest, four tracks clocking in at under 13 minutes, was culled from a solo set at 2640 Space earlier this year. Bell's take on the instrument is a bit different [...]

i'm addicted to these... hope everyone had a grand weeks end. we got back from columbia in one piece, barely. we hit the atlanta area last evening and it was like jeebus decided to take one of his epic beer pisses all over the area. it was pretty hairy, and white knuckled for about an hour or so. i love the assholes that decide that its still a great idea to go 70 when there's standing water all over the place and visibility is almost zero. its always the biggest piece of shit cars and/or jacked up dodge [...]
