(Seriously, The Native Americans Called Coney Island "The Land Without Shadows" And I Can See Why) I've never been to Coney Island before, nor have I ever attended Siren Festival,... By virtue of the marvellous ambiguity of the English language, you can read that title two ways: Nathan and Mandy, the husband-and-wife musical duo who together are Ghost In The Water, do actually live in Minneapolis (I know where, but I'm not telling you or you'll stalk them and try and steal their glockenspiel); AND on Friday 20th March they're playing live, as in a gig/show, in the fine city of Minneapolis. The show is dubbed an Electropop Birthday Dance Party to celebrate Nathan and Mandy's birthdays (Happy Birthday guys!). It's at 923 Washington Avenue, North [...]

From the opening out-of-tune bars of 'If I Could Do It All Again' through to the rambling 'Midlands Anthem' one can't help feeling disappointed with 'Baby Food'. Sure, the album has its good moments, but for someone considered a pro, it's awfully amateurish. The '100% Sample Free' approach was an admirable idea but, you know, if it aint broke, don't fix it. Some of Baby J's usual vibe is captured on this new record; his ear for a catchy tune and his ability to attract good guests are the evident remainders of his past work. Singles [...]

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of the Canadiana band Nathan . Their new record, Key Principles , came out in the states on April 10 and while I did write about it way back when , I just recently found this free download of the song "Trans Am" on their new Nettwerk ECard . What is it about Canadian bands and the "Trans Am" anyway? Trans Am Canadian band Ox and their own take on the venerable Trans Am: [...]

Damn the Canadian band OX , if it weren't for them I could safely declare Nathan my favorite Canadian roots band. Nathan's new record, Key Principles , is out now on Nettwerk . On "The Wind" you can hear some of the same naturalistic themes present on other Nathan songs. Nathan turns the wind into an anthropomorphic creature that can deliver both ill and good. Musically, Nathan continues on the road it's paved on prior releases; this consists of banjo, acoustic bass and other traditionally americana instruments. Catch Nathan's Canadiana set live [...]

Holy smokes, these guys are seriously good. Praise has been drawn from many other respected blogs (see here , here , and here ) and much has been made of their winning the John Lennon Songwriting Contest . All totally deserved. I can see the comparisons commonly being drawn, a conglomeration of Bright Eyes and Hold Steady . But the great thing is that it comes off as original, not derivative.
