If last month's mix showed my inspiration from Wyndham's funky February mix , then this one is my homage to Freed's mix last summer . I'm confident that many will make summer mixes, but this one is mine. Others may focus on what's new, but this focuses on what's awesome. And that's what makes it so cool. Keeping with the vintage toons, here's another mostly soul mix for your listening pleasure. FYI - that's Inez Foxx on the cover. John Lennon would've been seventy today, but you probably already know that. It's a major media event around the world. He's been dead for nearly thirty years, and that's longer than he was active as a musician and a songwriter. He was only forty when he died from gunshot wounds inflicted on him by a crazed fan, but you probably already know that too. For me and people my age, too young to remember Kennedy's assassination and the ensuing craziness of that very decade that Lennon is most associated with, it's a touchstone and a moment we'll never forget. [...]

Please forgive me if the following lacks the laconic quality of my usual work. I find myself distracted by the fact that Slayer will be unleashing World Painted Blood, their latest paean to all things dark and distasteful, on November 3rd. How excited am I? Let's just say there's a tune called Public Display Of Dismemberment! This is shaping up to be the best Thanksgiving ever at Casa de Luftmensch. The Bottle Rockets - Lean Forward ... I was equally shocked and pleased to discover that [...]

Latter-day recordings from early ‘60s soul legend Nathaniel Mayer is best known among early soul fanatics for his 1962 hit “ Village of Love ,” a few other early ‘60s sides and the cult status he developed during a nearly forty-year absence from the music scene. He resurfaced briefly in 1980 with the single “Raise the Curtain High,” but it wasn’t until Norton Records issued the vault side “I Don't Want No Bald-Headed Woman Telling Me What to Do” in 2002 that he was prompted to return in full for 2004’s [...]
![Nathaniel Mayer, R.I.P. [Obituaries]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1337721_lg.jpg)
Nathaniel Mayer, the Detroit rock and R&B singer, died on Saturday following several months of health problems. Mayer had been a minor hitmaker in the '60s, when his "Village of Love," recorded with the Fabulous Twilights, hit No. 22 on the Billboard chart, and he'd recently releasing new music on Fat Possum Records with younger garage rockers like the Black Keys. (You can hear his more recent stuff on Mayer's MySpace page .) Writing about Mayer in The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made ("Village of Love" was No. 265), [...]

A bit of sad news today... Veteran Detroit soul/rock artist Nathaniel Mayer died Saturday (Nov. 1) in his hometown after a series of strokes. He was 64. Mayer is best known for the 1962 hit "Village of Love," which he recorded for local label Fortune Records. But he vanished from the music scene in the late 1960s, and save for a one-off 1980 single, did not return to active duty until 2002, when he began performing again. In 2004, Mayer released "I Just Want To Be Held" via Fat Possum [...]

Tuesday Feb the 12th was a beautiful day in Las Vegas. It was warm, sunny and we got to see the Black Lips play 2 songs before being stopped by security for Cole show playing guitar with his.. uh... dick. The day of our party winds came down upon the Vegas valley and dropped the temp a good 30 degrees in one hour and preceded to wreak havoc upon anything not bolted down. It was like a hurricane outside and time to get started. Luckily having so many great bands in one place meant there's be a [...]

A study published in the August 23, 2007, New England Journal of Medicine has confirmed our greatest fear: our grandparents are having sex. This federally-funded study is the most comprehensive sex survey ever done among 57- to 85-year-olds in the United States. Ironically, these researchers could have saved a great deal of time and money if they would have just purchased Nathaniel Mayer’s Why Don't You Give It To Me? This record contains two types of songs: ones [...]

So the other day I got a package from Alive Records containing some new releases. This (Nathaniel Mayer) CD caught my attention immediately and, although I had a ton of other stuff to do, I immediately popped it in. What I heard proceeded to blow my mind. The first and title track of the record simultaneously reminded me of both "Exile on Mainstreet" era Stones and the Stooges "Funhouse", except for that instead of a pompous, white youth pour his/her heart it out it was the gravely voice of a black man in his late 60's. [...]

The Dap Kings have been busying themselves of late backing a certain British soul singer who's skilled at boozing and making headlines about boozing. They also back a certain Ms. Sharon Jones, who should be making headlines with her soul. I'll take her stirring voice over booze, tatoos, and tabloids any day. Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings - 100 Days [ download ] One Hundred Days and One Hundred Nights by Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings will be out October 2nd on Daptone Records. Sharon Jones [...]

A couple years back I was knocking down a couple of cold ones before a Black Keys show at the Metro when my buddy asked who was opening. Nathaniel Mayer was listed as the opening act and, after a few jokes about the chances of this being a relative of John Mayer and the odds of hearing "Your Body is a Wonderland", a 60-something black dude in a shiny suit emerged and introduced himself. Over the next forty-five minutes or so, Nathaniel won over the crowd and we were all treated to a funky, bluesy set that was [...]

There are two things that you may not know about me. The first is that I love garage rock although I don't spend any time on it here at Songs:Illinois. One of my favorite retro garage bands were The Original Sins. Had they arrived a decade or two later (they were prominent on the east coast in `86) they would probably be duking it out with The White Stripes and the current crop of Detroit garage acts. The second thing you may not know about me is that my 5 year old son's name is Nathaniel. So [...]
