The National Beekeepers Society 's style is sort of rough around the edges, but sets itself over happy-go-lucky melodies. It's been done before, and can create a rather sketchy scenario. But, their album Pawn Shop Etiquette is proof that these guys have mastered where so many have failed. They deep sea dive into the vast "sort of punk, but not really" ocean that can be devastating and as dried up as Dennis Miller's sense of humor. The tone of intensity throughout the album is set by the opening [...]

Christ, I get back from a long (and, frankly, really rather interesting) meeting and find the website suffering somewhat from the last post being just a little serious. Stop it, people, there will be no meaningful discussions on Friday, particularly not after lunch, it's just not right. On the radio show last night I played a song by a band called National Beekeepers Society, and it occurred to me afterwards that they have a sound very reminiscent of a lot of 90s indie rock. In fact, there's been a fair amount of that kind of stuff [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: National Beekeepers Society - Pawn Shop Etiquette words: Gareth O'Malley So how about that album cover, then? The tracklisting is mainly on the back cover, with the song names on stickers. It crosses over to the front cover, with the album's final, title, track in the bottom-left corner. I'm not really a fan of the artwork, if I'm honest, but I feel it adds something to the album. National Beekeepers Society hail from Wisconsin in the U.S., yet the album opener, 'Look At Me', sounds remarkably like [...]
I was recently sent a few tracks by National Beekeepers Society and have to tell you that Look at Me grabbed me and shook me right out of whatever bad mood I was in. I was nodding my head and tapping my toes which is about as animated as I get. A fun, snotty, blink and you'll miss it sort of song. In other words, it says and does everything it needs to to get you hooked in less that 2 minutes. Sort of reminds me of The Buzzcocks, take that as you will. Surprisingly, [...]

National Beekeepers Society , four guys from Madison, Wisconsin, have released their second full length. Pawn Shop Etiquette picks up the pieces that were left behind by late eighties surf infused legends The Pixies. With jangly guitars and plenty of distortion, echo and feedback this album has College Radio written all over it. They could be accused of being borderline plagiarists, but they steer clear by refraining from the lyrical weirdness of Black Francis. Plus they have brought two rare instruments in indie rock: the theremin and the melodica. The stingy songs of [...]

National Beekeepers Society - "Lazy" . We don't call it lazy when a dune is all sanding in the sun, there, or when a tomato-plant bobs its furry leaves in the breeze. We don't call it lazy when oil slicks over the sea, when a cassette plays through in the Buick's tape-deck. So why does my mother call it lazy when I take the Greyhound for four days, cross-country; when I break into the art deco skyscraper and go down to the basement; when I plug in the fat cable of my amp & electric guitar; when I play with [...]
