Matthew Young runs the excellent Song, By Toad blog , and a similarly-named, similarly excellent record label. He loves new music, and talking about new music, preferably whilst sharing drinks with you, as I have discovered on many a queasy occasion. Because of his garrulous and idiosyncratic nature, he gets asked to speak on panels, usually about the "Future of the Music Industry", which is pretty much the title of every panel at ever music conference, ever. At The Great Escape, he announced that " Last FM and Pandora are fucking pointless" , [...]

It doesn't even know how to stop. Another edition of the #GardenVariety show goes down at the Trenton Atelier on the 31st of March, with cats like Sol Infinite , A Crew Called Listen , Rav P , Biz Mighty , M.I.L. , Scoop and plenty more! Beats from Divine Drummah + J. Gainey , with Ahmad and Latebloomer on the decks. The dude Edobeci is on hosting duties once again. Should be another fresh one. Facebook Event page is live and [...]

Ever since climbing onto the soulful drum and bass vibe 9 years ago with the classic "Stars In The Dark" on Bassbin, Random Movement, aka Mike Richards' production skills and DJ technique have pushed him to the forefront of state-side drum & bass—drawing in an audience both older and younger. His unique sound has been spread worldwide, with performances at major clubs and festivals across 4 continents. With the release this year of his album Lucky Guess, (out now on Innerground) and many collaborations with Marky & S.P.Y, Mixmaster Doc, Redeyes and Ben Soundscape (of the Insiders), his tracks have [...]

I didn't expect to feel such great kinship with Linda. At the start of " Natural Selection ," she's mousey. She seems weak. She wears mom jeans, and isn't even a mom. Played with great skill by Rachael Harris, Linda is a barren, Christian housewife from Texas. Her conservatism runs so deep, she questions the morality of having sex with her own husband. Her very sheltered world is rocked by the discovery that her husband has secretly visited a sperm bank for years, enjoying some porn along the way. A mid-donation stroke lets the cat out of [...]

RIYL = Skeletons, The Weird Weeds, Extra Life Capsized is jaunty and whipping, markedly tonguing the space between pop music and, well, everything else. It's an album filled with corners, turning you a sharp ninety degrees in one direction before sloping back a quick one-fifty and spitting you out in another direction. That being the case, preliminary listens can be a bit disorienting. It's an adventure listen, there's no doubt about that. This is what Capillary Action has a mind for: Spinning you so precisely as to unravel your brain [...]
The Denver Post Underground Music Showcase has made it through a decade! We're gearing up for a huge summer festival July 22-25th and there will be more bands than you can shake your SXSWangs at. James Lavelle has just released the latest UNKLE album, Where Did The Night Fall , on the Surrender All record label. On 'Natural Selection' Lavelle has teamed up with Texan psych-rockers the Black Angels and the results is as follows. Funny how quickly one can go from blistering 90 degree Californian weather to snow in such a small amount of time. It's been a long trip back to the RUBBISH space - Coachella, finals, sickness, snowstorms, and moves into the big city - but we made it. We survived. And in order to celebrate, we've [...]

The third annual Monolith Festival took over scenic Red Rocks in Colorado last weekend, with one of the most pleasantly-varied assortment of music yet, and I found much to entertain my ears. Perhaps I was more motivated this year than last, but despite the rain Saturday and drizzles on Sunday, I constantly found myself making tough choices between acts slotted simultaneously that I wanted to see. It's good to have more than enough choices at a festival, running back and forth to catch the next buzzed-about act - and I certainly did at Monolith [...]

I'm just back from Outside Lands and already ready to do it again. Lucky for me, the third Monolith Festival solidifies the music lovers of Denver into one seething mass of awesomeness next weekend. For those of you who are considering coming out (and you should) get the VIP pass so you can come bowling with me on Friday at the Kick-Off Parties! On Friday, September 11th, two simultaneous parties will take over The Gothic and next-door Moe's BBQ & Bowling [...]

The Golden Triangle sounds like a mystic land of enigma from which no one returns, but it's actually the area of Denver that the 15th annual Westword Music Showcase will overrun Saturday with 85+ ace bands, both local and national. On Saturday, come peruse ten stages of goodness with me; we'll see local bands worth vigorously loving like Everything Absent or Distorted , Young Coyotes and Houses , as well as influential Denver punk pioneers [...]
