While we're on a DFA tip, here's an ode to breaking up with your girlfriend by NDF.

Beautiful, melancholy dance music from NDF, a sumptuously melodic happy-haunt. At 11 minutes it's still over too soon, so maybe the fuck-epic 18-minute Villalobos work is for you. Whichever, Pilooski is right. 5am is when the party starts. NDF - When We Last Met / BUY pic from manuel alvarez bravo on toki-no-wasuremono

In the truest spirit of democracy and parity, I believe that a best songs list should look very different from a best albums list. As a teenager, I always loved Charles Aaron's year-end songs list in Spin because they were so thrillingly eclectic. Aaron's lists democratized taste for me: they gave me permission to love both The Fugees as much as I loved PJ Harvey. Since then, I've believed that a best songs list should be for the one-offs, the flukes, the lucky ones, the temporary geniuses, the chart-toppers, the forgotten underdogs. There's no sense in telling you that [...]

You know when you start something fun, and it quickly becomes disgusting, yet some strange masochistic drive pushes you on? Like ordering, then eating, ten chicken balls dipped nuclear orange sweet and sour sauce, followed by a bag of chips? I'm at that point now. Up to my neck in another taxonomic shitheap of songs, and wondering why the eff I started? I'm afraid the albums may have to wait until the brain cools down. Maybe February. Regardless, there's no looking back now...time to grimace and suck the battered reconstituted muck out of that fifth chicken ball. [...]

But perhaps even more interesting than LPs this year were the EPs, like those from Zola Jesus, James Blake, Forest Swords and Light Asylum, just to name a few that really stood out. Check out the complete list below. Light Asylum : In Tension Forest Swords : Dagger Paths James Blake : Klavierwerke / CMYK Zola Jesus : Stridulum / Valusia Twin Sister : Color Your Life [...]

15. STL, "Vintage Hunter" [ Something ] ( buy ) You'd think that with such an abundance of releases, Stephan Laubner's sound would start to feel watered-down. Instead, we find in Laubner a level of dependability more or less unmatched within the genre. From his healthy collection of lovingly crafted productions, there often emerges a dreamy track or two made to stick in your ear for years. For 2010, "Vintage Hunter" takes the prize. Here Laubner's steady, dubby loops are offset by bright, punchy melodies and bubbling ticks and taps. His signature stumbling drums [...]

A couple of crackers from a couple of a favourite people: Those nice DFA chaps recently made Banjo Or Freakout's cover of NDF's 'Since We Last Met' available for nish. It's a gorgeous remake full of reflective reverb. You can pick up the original here . (Download) Tame Impala's 'Lucidity' gets a smart rework from one of our most cherished Parisian's, Pilooski . He slaps on 'My Sharona' drums and adeptly amps up the psych. (Download)

DFA Records released NDF's single Since We Last Met as a 12" & digital single on August 30th. Soon after, the label asked London-based bedroom pop artist Banjo or Freakout (aka Alessio Natalizia) to cover the track- one week later, the final cover version found its way to DFA! Since We Last Met is NDF's first single on DFA. Bored with both rock and roll and his own name, ex-drummer Steven Ford released his debut 12", a techno single titled Read Me/Silver City , under the [...]

Since early September, NDF's " Since We Last Met " has slowly become one of my favorite songs of the year. The ten minute running time has not deterred me from obsessively listening to the song dozens of time. There's just so many tiny details that make the record so successful: the channel-flipping handclaps, the ghostly vocals that usher in the song's central melody, the glassy beat punctuated by snare flourishes, and the gentle bass work. Now, Banjo or Freakout has produced a faithful interpretation that swaps out a few characteristic details for some new touches. The cover is guided by [...]
This weeks single of the week comes from the world of Minimal Techno from Berlin. Legend of the scene, Bruno Pronsato alongside Sergio Giorgini form NDF , a surprising addition to the roster of New York label DFA Records , usually known for its house and electro output, genre's most at large in the record labels back yard. The track is a bliss and spacious minimal epic, built around a calming and washy vocal sample, a slow building and intensely captivating bass line and a simple meandering synth line. On the [...]

Even without Richard Villalobos' remix on the flipside of this single, NDF's " Since We Last Met " would sound like a Kompakt release. That's not to say, of course, that DFA have become merchants of German minimal techno. But NDF's brand new single does sound conspicuously Teutonic with its barely-there flute and crisp handclaps and mesmerizing beat seemingly made of bells and glass. As a break-up song, it's a surprisingly light affair. There's no hand-wringing, no insomnia, no angry recriminations. This is a song about the moment in the distant future when the loss doesn't quite sting anymore, when [...]
Delicious techno star-bomb from the mysteriously titled NDF, seriously notable for a Villalobos re-edit and the fact that it sounds more akin to a Kompkat release than a DFA twelve. Whatever, both sides are coated in the sumptuous soft synth elegance; all arcing synth clusters, clicking percussion motifs and multitracked, whispered vocal lines. Artist : [...]
