Negativland will forever be known as scramblers extraordinaire with their frenetic blend of outlandish nuggets and ritzy musical numbers, but with the upcoming release of Thigmotactic the audio collage is backed by notions of sing-alongs and song structure. Clearly, the 28-year veterans are losing their minds but the ensuing madness come July 15th has us ready to lose our minds all over again. It just so happens EVP has a taste of what to expect of Thigmotactic : Negativland - "Richard Nixon Died Today" [...]

Anyone familiar with the long-running culture-jamming subversive audio collage outfit Negativland would not be surprised to hear that the band has gone and challenged itself and listeners for yet another album. However, what's truly remarkable about its forthcoming new album Thigmotactic is that it's the first song-based release of its 28-year history. The band's entertaining and challenging cut-up motif remains intact, but these are songs to which you can sing along, ponder existential notions and/or wonder just what makes these guys so prolific and dead-on clever. Thigmotactic takes another path in [...]
Negativland to release new song-based album - its first in its 28-year history - and remain subversive as ever. Who's in the Music For Maniacs parking lot? The Car Music Project : Believe it or not, sounds produced are made using automotive parts. Guitars, bass, even what sounds like a sax is done by blowing thru tubes: " Noodles Test Mix 1" Wendy Cha m bers : Back in the early '80s, this New Yorker invented the Car Horn organ, which is exactly what you think [...]
After attempting to take a slight break from 24 HPP and adjust to a new, ridiculous schedule I've come to the conclusion that that was a bad idea. It's going to be more difficult to get updates here regularly but we choose to do these things because we love them. As such, why ignore the things you love because of the things one has to do? Outside of sheer survival (i.e. don't blog when you have to do other work) it's always a poor excuse. That said, there are so many new records [...]

Long awaited re-issue of Negativland's legendary 1983 difficult listening conceptual suburban epic A Big 10-8 Place is out. Over three years in the making, and with ten-thousand-million-billion analog tape splices, this insanely cut-up and uniquely weird release remains the hands down favorite of many fans of Negativland's work. This re-issue comes with a 60-minute bonus DVD of Negativland's "NO OTHER POSSIBILITY" video, which was made in the mid-80s. audio: THEME FROM A BIG 10-8 PLACE INTRODUCTION [...]

"Declared heroic by their peers for refashioning culture into what the group considers to be more honest statements, Negativland suggests that refusing to be original, in the traditional sense, is the only way to make art that has any depth within commodity capitalism..." – The New York Times "Twisted genius...compelling...parody and satire as a grassroots weapon of consumer resistance." – Rolling Stone "Negativland isn't just some group of merry pranksters; its art is about tearing apart and reassembling found images to create [...]

Twenty earthy and nutritious MP3s after the jump. Inspired by Lukas' post of the Ralph Records Goobers album last week, here's a companion album: Potatoes, an out-of-print collection of folk songs that was released on vinyl in 1987 and on CD in 1989 with a slightly different lineup. Here's the complete collection of material from the CD version (including folk songs by Reverend Howard Finster, Mark Mothersbaugh, Half Japanese, Bongwater, The Tinklers, The Residents, Snakefinger, and Negativland), along with a couple bonus Potatoes tracks sliced from my vinyl version [...]

Dance! ( mp3 ) For: Robert Stitt, 48, mortally wounded in a "battle dance" yesterday.

Yesterday's reference to Tahitian Treat, which just sort of popped into my head while I was writing in a odd moment of submerged memory recall, got me thinking about my life as a tonic drinker. The use of "tonic" in reference to carbonated sugar water is a willful bit of provincialism on my part, expressly intended to baffle non-New Englanders and possibly lead them to add "drinking Vitalis" to the list of eccentricities attributed to this cold, bitter corner of the country. (We also refer to rubber bands as "elastics" and use "pigpile" instead of "dogpile.") After I [...]
