Kind of a short week for releases once again, but there are a couple of new albums to take a look at nonetheless. One album I definitely recommend is former Mojave 3 / Slowdive frontman Neil Halstead's second solo album, Oh! Mighty Engine . Also out this week is the full-length We have cause to Be Uneasy from Wild Sweet Orange , who happen to make their home in nearby Birmingham, Alabama. Considering the group is from my own state, you're probably asking why I haven't mentioned them here on the blog [...]

Let's kick things off this week with the sultry, smoky voice of Melody Gardot . Her debut LP, "Worrisome Heart" is out and what I've heard of it so far is just stunning. Gardot was seriously injured after being hit by a car whilst riding her bicycle in 2004. One of the treatments suggested for her was music therapy and she has truly blossomed. The title track is a guantlet thrown down for aspiring jazz singers. Sublime. MP3: Melody Gardot - "Worrisome Heart" . Word of mouth is still [...]

Not a great week in new music, but I do want to pick up the Neil Halstead... Records Released on 7/29/08 Records I've Heard: James Jackson Toth : Waiting in Vain (Rykodisc) – He was the leader of Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice. His first solo record features Nels Cline, Carla Bozulich as well as members of Vetiver and Deerhoof. It's less freak folk and more straight ahead singer-songwriter, but there are some interesting songs on here. Download " [...]

Photo via MySpace When it comes to multi-day, acronym-ed, club-hopping music festivals I think that coming away with one new discovery that genuinely excites is a pretty good return for all the pavement pounding that inevitably goes into it. I'm not talking about acts that are already familiar or favoured, but ones that you take a chance on based on a single song or a couple MySpace streams. For me, this past NxNE , that honour went to London, England's 6 Day Riot . While I didn't pick [...]

NEIL HALSTEAD is the lead singer & songwriter for MOJAVE 3 , the band responsible for my third favorite album of 2006, PUZZLES LIKE YOU . I'd been a fan of Mojave 3 since their 2000 release, EXCUSES FOR TRAVELLERS , which leaned heavily toward long, slow, sad, desert-drive dirges. PUZZLES , by contrast, upped the tempos and "pop" quotient by a factor of five (by my admittedly primitive, pseudo-mathematical calculations), thereby rendering this listener happy as a pig in poop. For his second solo album, [...]

This weeks slate of new releases pales in comparison to last week , but there are still a few worth picking up. If you're only grabbing one we recommend Wild Sweet Orange's , We Have Cause to Be Uneasy . It's a pleasant album that provides an exciting listen. Although, you probably can't go wrong with any of the new albums. Let us know if we left anything of worth off the list. New Releases, Album Art, Streams, and Mp3's after the jump...

myspace It's pretty much impossible to talk about Neil Halstead's new record - Oh! Mighty Engine - without talking about his past. Mojave 3 and Slowdive are just too good not to want to discuss, but it's probably better to look forward. Neil has found a home on Brushfire Records, and honestly, the new tracks sound perfect echoing around corners in my new house. Witless and Wise is light and airy, the surprising pep of the backbeat on Always the Good gets your head moving and the lead [...]
Eight days already? Has it really been that long? It is a bit hard to believe that me and Hails have been "on our own" for this long. Let's just say that if we said we wanted mommy to come home, that would be a huge understatement. Huge. Earlier this week while I was giving Hailey a bath, I could tell that she didn't want to go to bed. She just wanted to play and play and play some more. Hailey even went so far as to [...]
I can't believe it took him 6 years to write the same album as Sleeping On Roads. 1/5 (for effort)
The Listening Post catches up with Neil Halstead and asks about Slowdive reunions: No, there are no plans to get Slowdive back together. We had a lot of pedals, a lot of love and some good grass. When the love ran out, we sold the grass and smoked the pedals.

here's two records i have been looking forward to and both are pretty solid through my first couple of listens. ex-slowdive and mojave 32er, neil halstead's oh! mighty engine comes out on brushfire records , which may be owned by jack johnson, on 7.29. honestly, its more of the same from neil but i can deal with more of the same when the songs are this lovely. oh! mighty engine finds him treading more and more into nick drake territory, which again is all good with me. paint a [...]
I may not count myself among the legions who enjoy the songwriting style of Jack Johnson, but the man, and his partners at Brushfire Records, have my respect for putting out the music of Neil Halstead and Rogue Wave. Halstead, who earned my everlasting interest with the gorgeous wash of sound he created while in Slowdive, and after that the more clean-cut and countrified Mojave 3, will release

taken at The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens Between Thought and Expression brings you the sultry voice that Eliot Spitzer paid $4,300 a night to hear. Can You See the Sunset reviews The Sugar Oaks , and brings you The Toadies' best song. For the Records highlights the best of Canadian Music Week . I Guess I'm Floating has new songs by My Morning Jacket , [...]
Slowdive may have broken up in 1995 but most of its members still continue to make music. Forever associated with the short lived but much loved shoegazing genre Slowdive released 3 albums and a number of EP's. For the uninitiated tracks to seek out include 'Catch The Breeze', 'Machine Gun' and 'When The Sun Hits'. Slowdive - Shine (1991 Peel Session) Rachel Goswell As well as being every

So, the AYF? two year anniversary passed with little fanfare. However, it's never too late for a birthday (my father knows this), so I figure we can indulge in a celebratory post of live recordings we were listening to two years ago. Both of these bootlegs have been floating around the internet for - well - two years, but they're still a bit difficult to track down. Featured here are two of our favorite musicians -- The Shins [...]
