Words // Scott Pingeton With rumor swirling, and now hard proof , that Neil Young was recording new music with Crazy Horse, I've started digging back into my own Shakey archives. As much as I love all incarnations of Neil Young, the Crazy Horse is my favorite - who doesn't love those long jams on "Down By The River" and "Cortez The Killer", or the sheer power of "Powderfinger" or "Hey Hey, My My"? Here's a brilliant recording of NY and Crazy Horse at the Boston Music Hall in 1976. An incredible [...]
Neil Young recently told the world that he's back together with Crazy Horse, the backing band that helped him invent a vicious strain of fuzz-rock back around 1970, and that they're working on new material together. Today, we get a long, fiery glimpse at what that new material might sound like. As Rolling Stone points out , Young recently posted a 37-minute video on his website. The images in the video are just inanimate studio objects, but the sound is a wandering but molten improvisational effects-pedal-mashing Crazy Horse studio session. It weave in bits [...]

Neil Young & Crazy Horse might be a household combination when it comes to the legendary folk singer's backing bands, but The International Harvesters supported Mr. Young in the 802s producing some truly proto-country results. Released earlier this year on Record Store Day, the quite good collection A Treasure features compiled tour performances from 1984 US tour with the pickin' 'n' fiddlin' Harvesters, and above you can check out an exclusive performance of "Southern Pacific", courtesy of Cluster 1 , which sees the band chugging along behind Young. The footage is so "raw" that [...]

Hey Diddley Ho neighbors! It's Mother's Day. The day that probably ranks right next to your anniversaries as the day you fear forgetting the most. Thank God the sports world uses pink bats and ribbons huh? Way to keep us on track. Facebook helps me remember my friend's birthdays, but only if I bother to log in. I don't have that anniversary problem, but I do have a mother. She now hangs her hat in Las Vegas as she enjoys her Golden Years. She goes to see The Gambler (Kenny Rogers) and waxes nostalgic about The Rat Pack as she [...]

Got all inspired by two recent entries posted during Live Week on Star Maker Machine . Both (check here and here ) featured mighty fine, never officially released live tracks by Neil Young. So I dragged myself upstairs, started rummaging through my collection of Dinosaur Sr. rarities, and here´s some of the treasure I found. These songs may turn up eventually in some future installment of the Archives , but with Neil you just can´t count on anything, ever. In the meantime, make do with this Jurassic ten pack. [...]

Les concerts de Young avec le Crazy Horse étaient divisés en 2 parties, la première c'était [...]

Do you remember the early '90s? C'mon, think a little... it wasn't that long ago (and things haven't really changed all that much, either). It was a prosperous time! The Simpsons , Melrose Place , and Beverly Hills, 90210 had all started its reign on television (aka the FOX invasion), the '80s still bled into culture only with hotter colors, and America considered the Middle East a plausible area for democracy. Funny how things change, huh? Well, if you really dig deep - and squint between the cracks - you'll recall the [...]

I have been working on this blog for like a year and I have only 48 posts, that sucks. But in all reality I have been downloading and listening to some great music. I enjoy posting music, and finding covers of songs that I like, and sometimes I might come up with something interesting to say about music. Cool. That's why I am doing this. Or at least I think that is why I am doing this. Anyway here is something I'm going to try and work on for the next while. I put before you this hypothesis [...]

Is rock and roll music a teenager's game? Meaning: once one enters her or his mid-20s and beyond, does the whole meaning of the music change? In other words, is music the muse or the medium? I say yes.

lyric from The Sound of Failure - The Flaming Lips My new daily jolt of artistic + musical beauty comes from clicking over to stolenlyric.com , a fresh artistic endeavor by my good friend/former Denver photographer Laurie Scavo . When we were photographing shows side-by-side, before she up and moved to LA, I was always amazed at her eye for the smallest details on stage. She'd see things through her lens that I never noticed. In her new artistic project, [...]
Whilst the whole world focussed on Glastonbury a few weekends ago I attended what I jokingly called Glasto-lite, Hard Rock Calling. Having featured The Police, The Who and Aerosmith in past years this relatively new festival delivers a valid alternative to those who are unable (or unwilling) to disappear for 4 days camping in a [...]

Gig Of The Week - Hard Rock Calling, Hyde Park Despite it's frankly ludicrous comfy slippers and Daily Mail name this three day festival in Hyde Park has thrown up some very juicy acts indeed. Friday is probably the weakest headliner but strongest overall day, with The Killers topping off a bill including Howling Bells, Metric, Silversun Pickups and Echo & The Bunnymen. Saturday sees the incomparable Neil Young play along with Fleet Foxes, Seasick Steve and not really anyone else of interest. If you're still going by Sunday you'll be tested by one of The [...]

Filed under: Music Appreciation When Batman faced the Joker in their epic showdown, the masked vigilante discovered what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. Neil Young may have experienced the same thing when he met Donald Trump . The Donald has said of the rock legend, "Whatever the hell 'it' is, he's got it." Next Download Neil Young Songs
Is Neil Young a guilty pleasure or not? Damned if I know these days, but I still like to roll out stuff like Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) every now and then. This is that classic old bit of rock'n'roll nonsense about it being better to burn out than to fade away, which is frankly a bit of an embarrassing statement to make at any age. This is from the 1991 live album Weld . He was not a young man at the time. Still, that's pretty much irrelevant; [...]

What came first - the music or the misery? Did I listen to music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to music? Do all those records turn you into a melancholy person? People worry about kids playing with guns, and teenagers watching violent videos; we are scared that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands - literally thousands - of songs about broken hearts and rejection and pain and misery and loss. The unhappiest people I know, romantically [...]
