Hotly anticipated on the back of 2011 breakthrough album Smoke Ring For My Halo , Kurt Vile’s latest – Wakin' On A Pretty Daze – immediately establishes an overtly colourful tone right from its opening title track. Clocking in at nine minutes-plus, the song has it all: prolonged jams, striking nods to Neil Young, and a laid back eminence that is all too easy to become lost in. As Philly-dweller Vile’s fifth studio album duly unravels however, it becomes ever more evident that the elements responsible for making this introductory wig out oh so appealing [...]

LA from The Byrds to The Eagles This is a great BBC documentary that makes a nice companion piece for our Southern California series from last year. Here is what the BBC website has to say about it.... Documentary looking at the music and mythology of a golden era in Californian culture, and telling the story of how Los Angeles changed from a kooky backwater in the early 1960s to become the artistic and industrial hub of the American music industry by the end of the 1970s. Alongside extensive and never before [...]

Lyrically, the songs are the result of, Sam, reading much postmodern fiction by writers such as Hubert Selby Jr (‘Sulfate’); discovering an appreciation for aerial dance and a fascination with outer-space (‘Lyra’); the TV-drama [...]

After more than thirty years in the business, Billy Bragg has earned a reputation as one of folk's elder statesmen. The rough punk edges have been sanded down and the brash Essex accent has softened on Tooth & Nail, his first album of original material since 2008 . Gone is the barricade-jumping, hard-living Bragg of old, perpetually thumbing his nose at the establishment and Maggie Thatcher. The intervening years have calmed him down, and this is most apparent on his new album. The 12 [...]

Alas, we're not too impressed with the new Phosphorescent album to be honest, muchachos . Except for one remarkable track called The Quotidian Beasts that is. Ramshackle and doom-laden, it's yet another recent example of the ongoing influence of Neil Young's Ditch Trilogy , and I guess that isn't so bad. Quality never goes out of style, you know? Phosphorescent - The Quotidian Beasts

Throughout the early part of the aughts Devendra Banhart was best known as the face of the of "freak-folk" movement, thanks in part to the fact that he looked as if he had stepped straight out of the Haight circa 1967. Earlier this month the talented singer-songwriter released his eighth studio album and debut for Nonesuch Records - Mala . The 14-track effort features Banhart's familiar mix of wispy folk and Tropicalia sounds, with bits of synth-y dance beats. Banhart will kick off an extensive world tour in support of the [...]

Field Report's Chris Porterfield performing live BY JORDAN MAINZER The third guy’s a charm. That is, Field Report’s Chris Porterfield is the third and latest spin off from retrospectively super indie supergroup DeYarmond Edison, the early 2000s band that also included Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and the members of Megafaun. Porterfield’s surname-anagram band released their excellent self-titled debut last year and played most of it on the night of March 5th at Evanston SPACE. A six-piece band, Field Report transformed the intimate sounds of their debut to the bourgeois suburban venue [...]
Five artists came dancing across the water to take on Neil Young's classic - and you can say "What a killer" about each and every version.

We posted earlier about Fink's "Warm Shadow" on the soundtrack for the AMC TV series The Walking Dead and we wanted to highlight another excellent track that has been used in two episodes, recently in last week's episode "Prey" where in the end Andrea was shown with her mouth gagged and sitting "prey" to the Governor's torture chair/chamber. The track is Voxhaul Broadcast's " You Are The Wilderness " by clicking on the pic above of poor Andrea The Walking Dead (AMC [...]

If we've learned anything from the music of Joy Division and The Smiths, it's that the good people of Manchester, England, can handle bleak, uncompromising music. They were certainly given a bracing shot of it on this autumn night in 1973, as Neil Young opened a seven-date tour of the UK. With the Eagles opening [...]

The Men: New Moon – When putting on the newest record by The Men , one might need to do a double take to make sure the right band is playing. It’s the same one alright, with an evolving, multifaceted sound that leaves the fans and listeners of old a little disoriented. The Men are shaking things up. New Moon takes a sharp turn from the Brooklyn band’s punk rock and hardcore sounds of their past. Since last year’s Open Your Heart they’ve latched onto the pop [...]

Director: Dave Grohl Cast: Dave Grohl, Joshua Homme, Trent Reznor, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks Certificate: 15 Running Time: 108 minutes Release: March 15 With Sound City , Dave Grohl ventures out on his first filmic endeavour, and one could be mistaken for assuming he has done this before. Stitching together a patchwork of music history, he zeroes in on Sound City, a geriatric dive of a recording studio, awash amongst the monotony of San Fernado's urban sprawl. Through an impressive set of interviews with varying persons of [...]
