What a difference 13 months makes. If you recall, back in October of '05, Sony was distributing a 16-song promotional version of Nellie McKay's sophomore LP, Pretty Little Head , to all media for review. While the album was technically watermarked, the album was decoded and widely circulated around the web all the while garnering a shitload of attention. The bulk of this buzz came from the fact that Nellie had intended the album to be 23 songs but Sony decided to truncate it for various reasons. Long story short, Sony and Nellie [...]

image courtesy of Toothpaste for Dinner Before we get started with this week's Graboid, let me clear up a few things about all these older files hosted by EZarchive. The last post I made about it was posted completely out of anger and I wasn't too clear about what exactly was going on. I'm still getting a lot of emails to fix a lot of the now (as of Nov. 1st) broken links from Oct. 25th and earlier. When EZarchive decided to go to it's 3.0 version they sent us [...]
For some reason, it's taken me a really long time to get to Nellie McKay. Everything I'd heard about her made her sound like something I'd enjoy - cabaret pop music, sung by a funny, young, daring performer. And though I know she's a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing, I'm still somewhere in the middle. I thought I'd at least get this track out there, though, because I do like it. Nellie McKay - There You Are In Me. Her second record, like her first, is a double album. You've probably heard something about it over the past year - Columbia...
Yesterday, hip-hop pianist Nellie McKay released Pretty Little Head, the follow-up to her highly acclaimed Get Away From Me. It was originally slated for release last October, but Sony insisted on a single CD, instead of Nellie's 23-song opus. But...
Happy Halloween!! Though not quite the high-traffic release day that 6/6/06 was, today's notable all the same. We'd like to remind you that Lady Sovereign's album, Vertically Challenged , is out today. Wait, wait. It wasn't out yet?!?! Anyone else feel that though artist development is always key, that maybe that whole process was unneccesarily drawn out? Maybe it's just me... It seems to have worked -- everyone knows who she is now, right? ( site ) Anyway, speaking of delayed releases from tiny, sassy ladies -- Nellie McKay's double disc, Pretty Little Head , [...]

Nellie McKay is wacked out, seriously, this gal marches to the beat of her own drummer. If the title of her debut album didnt show that, ("Get Away From Me" was a play on two other albums titles, Norah Jones' Come Away with Me and Jane Monheit's Come Dream with Me) then this new double disc version of Pretty Little Head will. Dont misunderstand though, Nellie is really an amazing talent. And being wacked out in the realm of musicians is kinda like being mayor in some ways, the most creative and eccentric can [...]
Drake fave Tom Waits has a new box set of odds and ends coming soon ( Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards , 11/21) but for some reason that has nothing to do with these four new exclusive tracks getting love from AOL's newly renamed Spinner.com site (dropped the 'indie music blog' tag - good move.) All of the tracks (three streaming, one a download) are from August performances this year, and are fairly representative of Waits' amazing live shows. Gobble 'em up turky lurkey. [...]
Nellie McKay is an artist I've seen here and there on the blogosphere but it wasn't until this week when I got her (two disc) album in the mail that I gave it a proper listening. With 23 songs you'd expect alot of filler, which is partially true but there's quite a few gems in "Pretty Little Head" also. The first song that really caught my attention was the third track "There You Are In Me" which is a lovely piano ballad pushed along by Nellie's very intriguing singing style. "The Big One" is the first single from [...]
Friday Random Five (#20) 1 - Jill Sobule has unearthed another lost gem: this version of "Texas" (MP3) also features Steve Earle on vocals and guitar and dates back to the reign (rain?) of a certain Texas governor (not Ann Richards, rest her soul). 2 - Now three-quarters of the way to their year of monthly EPs, Bishop Allen returns with the September EP , which, as always, is available at their website for a [...]

Don't worry your pretty little head, pretty little Nellie McKay [fan page] has a double album coming the end of this month, October 31st. Pretty Little Head will finally be issued on New York indie label, SpinART Records, after it had languished on the shelf since October 2005 when her previous label, Columbia, nixed her plans to release a full 23 song, 65 minute album by stating they wanted a cut
MP3: NELLIE MCKAY "There You Are in Me" ( Toolshed ) After troubles at her old label Columbia, everyone's favorite uncategorizable piano songstress is finally releasing the anticipated Pretty Little Head on her own label Hungry Mouse (with distribution by SpinArt). This track from the double-disc is a good sign that the wait just might have been worth it. tags: music | mp3 | pop | singer/songwriter
The show is on 10/4 at Hiro Ballroom. The full line-up now includes: The Beastie Boys Nellie McKay Blue Oyster Cult The Star Spangles... and more! Worth the $50 pricetag? All proceeds go to local animal shelters. In other Nellie news, I saw in USA Today (of all places...) that Nellie's long-awaited Pretty Little Head will FINALLY see the [...]

So it's been a while since I've put together a little mix for all of you. I've been listening to a ton of great music lately, that I just haven't gotten around to posting about. So consider this an introduction. Let me know what you like/dislike, and make sure you put this all together on your little iPods while walking outside to the crisp Fall weather. It works perfectly with the temperature, trust me. Ennui - Time and Place Ok Go - Here It Goes Again [...]

I'm jumping the gun a little bit here, but I've been listening to a ton of Nellie McKay the last few days, so I wanted to post while I'm in the mood. Her 2004 album Get Away From Me was an astonishing work from someone younger than I am (she was born in 1982), merging jazz, rap, disco, funk, showtunes, and pretty much anything else you can imagine, and then topping it off with deliciously biting lyrics. Billie Holliday, Doris Day, Eminem, Kate Bush, and countless others. You like something? It's probably here. [...]
