At one point during Wilco's rousing set at Pomona's recently renovated Fox Theater, Jeff Tweedy stepped away from the mic and cupped his ear to elicit the crowd to take a verse during Yankee Hotel Foxtrot favorite "Jesus Etc." It was not the only instance of a massive crowd singalong during the band's one-and-half-hour set. If any alt-country-leaning band could ever be legitimately described as "arena-ready," Wilco certainly made a case for itself on Saturday evening.

Wilco began a three night, sold-out residency at the Wiltern last night with a marathon set that lasted nearly 2 1/2 hours, covered 29 songs from each of the band's 7 albums, and of course allowed ample room for guitar guru Nels Cline to do that shredding thing that he does so well. Wilco has maneuvered into a spry, loose machine, and with the exception of Radiohead, there's no other band performing now (or in recent memory) made of such talented players who also happen to play exceedingly well together. Where three nights ago, the Wiltern as [...]

ambient // electronic // guitar Wilco fans (you know who you are) will recognize Nels Cline as that band's lead guitarist, but he's been doing other stuff on his own (collaborating, featuring, musicating, etc.) for a little over thirty years, now — and yet, still, his solo stuff seems to remain under-appreciated. Perhaps some of it is too experimental for a big following (and I don't mean that as any kind of affront to Wilco fans), like the opening track from Coward , his latest album; it's called Epiphyllum, and is basically a [...]

Wilco – Gentilly Stage [5:30 pm]: Wilco is: • Jeff Tweedy: Vocals, guitar • John Stirratt: bass • Nels Cline: lead guitar, lap steel • Pat Sansone: keyboards, guitar • Mikeal Jorgensen: piano, keyboards • Glenn Kotche:`drums Set review: Before the set began several Wilco fanatics debated whether or not they'd play any new songs off their soon-to-be-released CD. The main Wilco scholar standing to my left was expecting they would, while [...]

Nels Cline 's latest release on Cryptogramophone , Coward, is an expansive guitar/stringed instrument tour de force of solo musical vision. What it lacks in single minded cohesion it makes up for in schizophrenic breadth, and through the magic of studio technology we get to hear multiple Nels Clines interacting with himself with incredible results. Coward is less like a continent, or even a discreet country, and more like an archipelago or collection of islands. The natives on each might look the same in physical appearance, but each has a different word for mango in their dialect, [...]

While his solo work is a far cry from his musical endeavors with Wilco, Nels Cline certainly has a lot to offer on his own. For those who have taken the time to explore Cline's records, it's extremely clear that Jeff Tweedy handpicked him for a reason. His avant garde jazz material pushes many of the genre's boundries, and offers up some compelling insights into sonic experimentation. This Spring (in addition to touring with Wilco) Cline has released a new solo record, Coward , and is touring in its support. Tomorrow night, [...]
I don't know if Bobb Bruno realizes it, but he's the Bizarro-World Kim Fowley—an unwitting svengali who's produced girl bands and wrote or played songs on countless other bands' albums, but whose utter lack of self-promotion almost hints that he secretly is horrified of his own project Making It Big.

Theme for today: Texture Wilco 's greatest hired gun returns with the newest installment to his vast catalogue. It is hard to compare this record to others I have heard that he has been involved with, because all of them have been completely different, but this one seems to be the most reserved in terms of his shredding abilities I have come across. Instead of simply utilizing feats of technical prowess like the typical solo guitar record, [...]

so, on my way out the door today, i grabbed as many promos that would fit into my hand. so roughly 8 were brought to work, but dammit if i havent been able to get past jason heath and the greedy souls' the vain hope of horse . i dont know how long this has been sittin in my pile, but god damn people i wonder what other gold mines im sittin on? i dont know much about these guys, cause i lost the press release that probably came with it, and their myspace page doesnt give [...]
The Cline twins interviewed on NPR's Weekend Edition .

If there's one album to recommend out of this week's bunch, it would certainly be Aboa Sleeping from the Finnish duo Burning Hearts . It's one of the better pop albums i've heard this year from beginning to end, which is a shame since the album isn't getting nearly the amount of coverage that it deserves. You can read the preview post from a couple of weeks ago right here . Other notable albums out this week include It's Not Me, It's You from Lily Allen , Dan [...]
Pretty solid release lineup this week. Let me be your friendly guide about what's good and what to skip. Good: Ben Folds , Dan Auerbach (from The Black Keys), Lily Allen , Madlib , Malajube , Napalm Death Skip: Um... yeah, I got nothing. Like I said, solid week. There are a lot on here I know nothing about and a lot that I haven't heard, so I can't speak about. :: An Horse , Rearrange Beds (Mom & [...]

My Dad hails from the small town of Belleville, just across the river from St. Louis. Although it would seem that nothing of any merit(other than my family) has ever come out of this Illinois town, there is one huge exception. Jeff Tweedy, front man and mastermind behind the band Wilco, grew up there as well. I just recently made the trek out to visit the family and in addition, I have discovered some new Jeff Tweedy, and Wilco related material. Therefore, I felt this was a great opportunity to make this post. [...]

So, let's for a minute leave the slog of new bands, what with their hopeful youth and incredible celebrity, despite having just one song, two demos, and a MySpace. We Twittered yesterday that dad rock heartthrobs Wilco were on the verge of going up to their Chicago loft to record their next LP. Well, this morning we stumbled across YANP , with news that the band premiered a few new songs at their Bridge School benefit show. Add to that the two songs that the two new tracks they did at Lollapalooza in August, and the picture for [...]

You may or may not have been introduced to Nels Cline from his role as axe-slinger in the rock band Wilco. Long before Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett even picked up a guitar this dude was writing and performing "the jazz music." I'm not quite sure what to expect at this upcoming hit @ The Dakota, but I assure you, It will probably blow you away... June 1, 2008 Nels Cline Singers Dakota [...]
I spent my Thanksgiving holiday down in St. George Island, Florida and decided for my drive down I would catch up on my 2007 releases and listen to nothing but albums I haven't listened to. The first album I popped in was Aceyalone 's new Lightning Strikes . i had really enjoyed some of his older stuff, but on my first listen of this one, i thought is very under par. Hip-hop is a style I truly love, but it is so hard for me to find stuff that i really dig these days. [...]
It's so nice to be back with you after our little flirtation with some other city. And to make up for lost time, we're going to approximately 85,132 shows this coming week (we're only half kidding) which may include... A huge lineup at the Hotel Cafe on Saturday with Sara Lov, Let's Go Sailing, Amnion, The Sweet Hurt, and Princeton. Also on Saturday, Summer Triangle 07 returns big time at KGB
