Here's a New York band that I don't even like all that much, but they are at the very least a two-hit wonder, which immediately places them above the vast majority of bands. Their music seems like fairly standard indie rock with a horn section thrown in for diversity's sake. What makes them more interesting in my book is their singer; I don't know of any other modern indie band that has a Pakistani singer (one who sounds Pakistani, at that), and I don't know of any who elevate songs about masturbation into something other than a joke. Imagine a big sweaty bowl full of gypsy, punk, dub, and jazz. Stir until the consistency is smooth and you've got Nervous Cabaret! My initial instinct is if you enjoy Gogol Bordello or Devotcha, check these guys out. They have more of an indie-rock edge though. I swear I can even hear some of The Clash in here!
