No one buys albums anymore, goes the music industry truism. And yet, for all that the format's commercial viability may or may not be on the wane, sitting and listening to a great album from start to finish is one of the greatest pleasures that music can bring. Flavorwire recently got to thinking about how one might build a record collection if you really only did buy one record a year. So here's the result of our thought exercise: 50 albums you really should own, one a year from 1963 until the present day. Yes, of course this mean things [...]

After hibernating for way too long I took a break. A break from stressing about exams, pressing deadlines and serving Exeter's drunks. It was the bank holiday, amazingly sunny and the Cavern was putting on an all day punk show. Emerging in the black pit which is the Cavern was truly disorientating. The light was eclipsed, and we were hit by power chords and battering drum lines. We were here for the indie band of the night, Hop Along , a new BSM signing and the creators of this beauty. [...]

Neutral Milk Hotel have announced a bunch of new US shows after announcing the some key tour dates in late April . The new shows will include Elf Power on most dates and the the touring lineup will feature Jeff Mangum , Scott Spillane, Julian Koster, and Jeremy Barnes. The band released their classic full length, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea , 15 years ago in 1998.

The recently-reformed Neutral Milk Hotel have added dates to their upcoming reunion tour. The Jeff Mangum-led band had already been scheduled to play a series of shows at the tail-end of the year, but have now confirmed a handful of additional North American outings. This will see the group tour throughout October with the likes of Elf Power, Half Japanese and Daniel Johnston, the latter two playing at Mountain Oasis Festival in Asheville with the band. It was also revealed last week that Neutral [...]
Austin City Limits has always been the odd festival out of the Big Four. Although one of North America's biggest and best music festivals, its presence within the Music Capitol of the World has led to instant sell outs long before it was cool to instantly sell out. Festival organizers have consistently catered their lineups more to the Austin demographics, putting less emphasis on big name reunions or unique gets. Alt-rock, folk, and twang frequently top the bill, and this year is no exception with the presence of Wilco, The National, Kings of Leon, and Vampire Weekend. [...]
On the back of announcing a reunion 15 years after they broke hipster hearts around the world by disbanding, Neutral Milk Hotel has been confirmed to bring their tour Down Under for November's Harvest Festival. NMH struck gold with their Anne Frank-inspired indie classic In the Aeroplane Over the Sea , released in 1998 shortly before the band's disintegration. Frontman Jeff Mangum has pursued an on and off solo career since, but this year's tour will mark the first return of the original NMH members. With Franz Ferdinand planning a series of shows in Aus [...]

Austin, Texas is already known as the Music Capital of the World, but is it also the Music Festival Capital of the World? In light of Austin City's Limits' massive 2013 lineup , along with the annual presence of South by Southwest and Fun Fun Fest, today's Rock it Out! Blog considers if Austin is deserving of such title. Do you agree? Leave your comments down below. Jeff Mangum's Neutral Milk Hotel are ever so slowly fleshing out their incredibly anticipated reunion tour. West and North East coasters will only find frustration (or potential road trips) here. 10/11 – Baltimore, MD @ 2640 Space at St. John’s Church (with Elf Power) 10/12 – Richmond, VA @ The National (with Elf Power) 10/14 – Covington, KY @ Madison Theater (with Elf Power) 10/15 – Urbana, IL @ The Canopy Club (with Elf Power) 10/18 – Memphis, TN @ Minglewood Hall (with Elf Power) 10/19 – Chattanooga, TN @ Track [...]
The news of Neutral Milk Hotel's long-hoped-for reunion landed like a bomb last week, but the band only announced five live dates. Two were in the tiny Athens 40 Watt Club, two were overseas, and only one was the sort of thing into which your average American ticket-buyer would have any hope of gaining entry. That's changed now. The band has extended its planned reunion tour to 16 dates (including three in Australia), with more presumably to follow. They're starting things off in a Unitarian church in Baltimore's Charles Village neighborhood, a place that throws really nice spaghetti-dinner [...]

It's true. The band that most of us gave up on ever being able to see is back and touring. Neutral Milk Hotel, who need no introduction for independent music lovers, announced last week that they would be re-uniting and playing a handful of dates. I'll be honest, I didn't expect Cincinnati to be one of the cities that the band booked a show. But lo and behold, today it was officially announced that Neutral Milk Hotel will indeed play a show in the Cincinnati area at The Madison in Covington this October. [...]

Jeff Mangum continues to build out Neutral Milk Hotel' s upcoming reunion tour . The band was already scheduled to play a pair of shows in their hometown of Athens, GA, along with an appearance at Asheville's Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Summit in late October. Now, they've announced dates in Baltimore, Richmond, Memphis, and a number of other Southeastern cities. They're also set to hit Australia and Japan toward the end of the year. Check out the updated docket below. In a recent interview with Pollstar , the band's booking agent Jim [...]

Mikal Cronin BY JORDAN MAINZER He's been starting over for a long time. He feels anew. So instead of baking a new cake, Mikal Cronin has proved that the cherry on top can make something special. In other words, tweaking and refining goes a long way. Lest we forget, tweaking and refining for Mikal Cronin doesn't just mean playing even more with Ty Segall. It also means getting a B.F.A. in music and learning how to compose for different instruments, the latter of which [...]
It was a sad night for those of us that grew up listening to Kris Kross, as Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly was found dead in his Atlanta, GA from a suspected drug over . Deftones learned of his passing while performing, and paid tribute with an impromptu mash up their song "Engine No. 93 with the Kris Kross megahit "Jump" . For today's Rock it Out! Blog episode, Sami (decked out in full backwards pants mode) wants to know what other hip-hop songs would sound good if covered by a rock or metal band. Leave your comments [...]
