Tomorrow marks the start of the huge celebration Merge has planned for its 20th Anniversary! It seems fitting that we take a look at the great albums the label has released over the years, the ones that brought us to this insane world of independent music and endeared us to it forever. Merge has obviously been wildly influential over the years and looking at the list below you will immediately see how far it reached and the true power of the label. Obviously not all of you will agree with the list, some will want re-number, some will change an [...]

You know the feeling. You pick up a record and play that first song and it totally bowls you over or it leaves you totally underwhelmed. Regardless, we have pretty lofty expectations for that first track. Many would argue that the first track is absolutely the most important. It's not that the other tracks aren't great, but there is something special in the opening track of an album. We also all know how it feels to love the first track on a record, but be totally ambivalent to the other tracks and there is nothing more frustrating. So, if the [...]

Robin Pecknold - Two-Headed Boy (Live) Yeah, I'm a Neutral Milk Hotel fanboy. This is from Stereogum : "Saturday night was the closing to a week of benefits in support of the Vera Project, a "music and arts center run by and for youth," dubbed A Drink For The Kids and featuring Grand Hallaway, Throw Me The Statue, and a special "solo" headlining set from Robin Pecknold. The lead Fleet Fox delivered a set of his own band's tunes, traditional songs, and some well-chosen covers -- from Neutral Milk Hotel to [...]

At a benefit concert in Seattle, Robing Pecknold [of everyone's fave band - Fleet Foxes] performed a cover of Neutral Milk Hotel's "Two Headed Boy." Kind of really wish I were there. If you wish the same, you can live vicariously through the MP3 MP3 :: Robin Pecknold - Two Headed Boy [NMH cover] [via The Fader ] Technorati Us

It's not Thursday but it is the beginning of the week, so why not a little cover pick me up? Plus, I couldn't wait the duration of three entire days to share this excellent rendition. It's like some bizarre glitch in the time-space continuum allowed for a favorite band of today ( Fleet Foxes ) to cover a favorite band of yesterday ( Neutral Milk Hotel ). Sans the bands, though, as Robin Pecknold performed solo at a benefit concert and covered a Jeff Mangum gem. I tend to think [...]

--------- Neutral Milk Hotel, based out of Athens, Georgia, was one of the finest bands of the late 90's. If you've never heard 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea' then you're missing out on a fantastic album. Buy it from .

Most serious indie music fans know about Neutral Milk Hotel. But the album that gets the most play is In the Aeroplane Over the Sea , their second album released in '98. And don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Aeroplane , in fact it's in my top five albums of all time (and a lot of days it's #1). But their debut album, On Avery Island , is oft neglected as less than good. Well, I am here to say that it is most certainly more than good, and at times has moments even [...]

[MP3] The Rural Alberta Advantage: "Frank, AB" We were excited several months ago when we heard this band had gotten signed to Saddle Creek and was getting a wider release for their great album Hometowns . Much has been made of their similarity to Neutral Milk Hotel, but RAA's music comes from a more accessible and less urgent place. It's organic and warm in the same way that In The Aeroplane Over the Sea , was crisp, cold and [...]

I have decided to re-review the Rural Alberta Advantage ’s [ MySpace ] fantastic debut album, Hometowns . I have two reasons for this. First, after riding a seemingly ever increasing wave of buzz, the RAA have signed to Saddle Creek, who will re-release their debut album on July 7th. Second, I was never pleased with my original review of Hometowns . While I still very much agree with the sentiment, the original review was rushed and poorly written. Because the Radio Exile review is the third result on Google, [...]

It's been eleven years since Jeff Mangum and co (Neutral Milk Hotel) released their masterpiece In the Aeroplane, Over the Sea . Fans have been waiting for Jeff's triumphant return ever since; yet, other than a few live guest spots, Mangum has kept completely silent. In some of the press sheets, The Rural Alberta Advantage are said to be the next Neutral Milk Hotel. Generally this sort of hyperbole squashes my interest, but I decided to give the record a shot anyways. I'm quite happy I did. The RAA's debut album Hometowns is thirteen songs [...]

That's right stuff and lossless quality is available . Both Demos and Live Material have been discovered and I'm enjoying sorting through it all, though I'll stick to mainly Neutral Milk Hotel. Neutral Milk Hotel, Elf Power, Olivia Tremor Control, and The Sunshine Fix are all great bands. Links below and some info on what I found interesting. There, deep in the nether regions of space, a small crack forms in the absolute blackness of nothing, before quickly bursting into a circular tear that burns through space like film celluloid. This tear is quickly followed by a glass-like shattering of the cosmos and the space-time continuum itself rips apart. A gaping hole is formed. Through this hole, in rhythmic time, come a thousand billion footsteps as the armies of Satan march in formation. Horrible terrible beasts of nightmarish origin and with foul weapons lumber through [...]

For the love of God, avoid "Luciana" until you’ve played through the entire 37 minutes length of the album, Hometowns . Just skip directly over track seven when you get to it. And to be fair, I will also avoid The Rural Alberta Advantage ’s direct comparison until the end of this review...To be fair. Not a song on this album won’t have your head ticking unconsciously, which means the band can be squared into the uncomfortable genre of indie pop. But it’s ever so much [...]
