V. VALE: OUR JOB IS TO FIGHT

V. VALE: OUR JOB IS TO FIGHT illustration by carolyn pennypacker riggs V. Vale is a founding father of West Coast independent publishing—his Search and Destroy zine is one of the four secret parents of L.A. RECORD , and his Re/Search books are a decontamination manual for the human mind. He's so erudite and hilarious he should host a talk show with Van Dyke Parks and he will be speaking with L.A. RECORD alum Henry Rollins at the L.A. Zine Fest on Sunday , which will be followed by a free afterparty with the Allah Las, [...]

NEVEREVER: TOO MUCH OF EVERYTHING

NEVEREVER: TOO MUCH OF EVERYTHING kim zuniga The ennui of off-season cheerleading practice, lifeguarding to save up for a longboard, scheming to elope to Tijuana with my summer camp sweetheart: I can just recall July at sixteen. Neverever have made themselves strangely at home in that moment. While debut Angelic Swells (Slumberland, 2010) was rife with school year angst, the band's new EP evokes the agony and ecstasy of summer vacation. But in the tradition of fellow Angelenos Suburban Lawns, Neverever's kitsch is freed from nostalgia by the grotesque realities of adolescence. [...]

Neverever- "Mexicoco"

A funny little song from the forthcoming Neverever EP, Shake-A-Baby . The title: "Mexicoco." It's the kind of song that would have been a surf pop hit in the 60s if it had a better recording going for it. I can see leagues of teenage girls chewing gum and gossiping about guys on the phone while this song spins on a 45 through a nearby record player. While it's kinda kitschy, Neverever seems more than aware of that, and that makes the total package a little tongue-in-cheek. So just catch a wave and bop your head to [...]

Tonight in L.A.: Daniel Lanois & Rocco DeLuca/ Michael Kiwanuka, Light FM, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Neverever, Future Dancing

Michael Kiwanuka : I'm Getting Ready
A night in Hollywood to spin you around: ► The RSVP-only It's a School Night at Bardot is starting the new month off strong — Daniel Lanois & Rocco DeLuca , great at the Satellite a few weeks ago, headline, and L.A.'s Bleached will rock it too. Most intriguing, though, is U.K. newcomer Michael Kiwanuka , who's released two EPs on Communion Records (run by Mumford & Sons' Ben Lovett) and who is planning a U.S. full-length in the spring. Kiwanuka was to have opened for Adele before her vocal problems [...]

Neverever – Wedding Day

Neverever – Wedding Day Click image to download full album Sounds like: The Strokes, Blondie "Neverever - Wedding Day" What's so good? Here we have California's Neverever, a four-piece power-pop (among other genres) band that really has a fantastic grasp on classic grungey 60s garage pop. Their featured track, "Wedding Day," is taken from their debut EP, Shake-A-Baby , due out on January 17, 2012. This track is so enjoyably catchy with its instant funky bass, wobbly [...]

Stream: Neverever - "Wedding Day" I think we can officially declare Slumberland Records as the home of Twee Indiepop. Already they've given us Big Troubles, Sea Lions, Veronica Falls, and now they're introducing Neverever. Neverever's new EP Shake-a-Baby continues Slumberland's trend of catchy bubblegum music with a slight lo-fi quality. Read more » http://rpc.blogcatalog.com/ http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ ping

LOCAL SHOW: San Francisco Popfest 2011

This coming Memorial Day weekend (May 25th - 29th) marks another wonderful line-up with the always original San Francisco Popfest . The great thing about SF Popfest is that every show boasts an impressive and nearly unfamiliar mess of bands from all over the world. The true indie rock fest will be featuring bands from the UK's C-86 movement, K Records of the Pacific Northwest, SF/DC indie-brainchild Slumberland Records. Even our own Blackbird Blackbird and The Mantles along with rising VA duo, Eternal Summers . Needless to say, [...]

Dirty Beaches + The Echo

Dirty Beaches + The Echo Here's a photo I snapped of Dirty Beaches (Alex Zhang-Huntai) at Cheer Up Charlie's during SXSW. Alex had just stepped off the stage to confront the audience, or at least remind us that he takes his music and fans seriously. I appreciated this part of the performance because so many bands tend to hide behind their mics. Dirty Beaches play The Echo Thursday, 4/28 with Bell Gardens [...]

VARIOUS: UNDER THE COVERS VOL. 2: A TRIBUTE TO PAUL COLLINS, PETER CASE AND JACK LEE amanda sutton Download Davila 666 "Hangin' On The Telephone" (from Under the Covers Vol. 2 out now on Volar/I Hate Rock 'n' Roll) Like most aging rock 'n' rollers in L.A., I've sang a Nerves cover onstage with a band at some point in my life, and I also hate young people. So I wasn't exactly unbiased when I was loaned (not even given) the super-limited cassette version, hot off [...]

Hypem Hunting Vol.1: "Blue"

Welcome to a new feature segment that we hope to share from time to time. I'm calling this segment Hypem Hunting, and it sprung from the fact that there is SO much music to browse through on the Hype Machine and I was never able to come up with a good way to dig through it all, especially the older stuff that had been posted a while back. So with that, I came up with a little game a while ago where I search for a random word (it could be just about anything) and listenread [...]
