Right from the offset on both of these masterpieces by The Nite-Liters, a higher-than-above-average-disp lay of tour de force is made effortlessly through a courtship of superbly coerced melody and well-placed drums. Intermixing all those stunning and angelic-like riffs together - with the plateau-felt bass lines & those amazing guitar strings / trumpet lines throughout 'Serenade For A Jive Turkey,' this could almost be the audio-equivalent to a physical bonafide orgasm! Mutating into the group known as New Birth when The Nite-Liters grew to the over the top breaking point of 17 members, they went on to achieve a few [...]

Last month I announced the end of the In Memoriam column. The reaction, by comments and messages via email and Facebook, surprised me. I had been under the impression, acquired by the few comments they received and the very average hits recorded, that the feature was only mildly popular (which serves to stress the importance to comment on posts in features you enjoy). The labour required for the In Memoriam feature remains prohibitive, but by cutting out what really took a lot of time – researching and collating the music and pictures – I can still provide a [...]

If I had any concerns that I might not be able to cover the 1980s with great soul music, then I was entirely mistaken. This series will go up to 1988-89 (at which point I'll consider whether 1990-91 is worth covering). The 1982/83 season saw the continued rise of the Quiet Storm, corporate smooth soul stuff which would eventually choker the genre. There isn't much of that on this collection (and where there is, such as Beau Williams' Elvina, it's great). Opening track Time Is appeared on veteran [...]

Bobby Womack: I Can Understand It and Simple Man [1972] from the album Understanding I tracked down this album because I wanted to hear the OG of I Can Understand It, which was covered by New Birth and featured in these pages way back in November '06. (Here's the New Birth version again for those who missed it the first time.) Well -- this album is a monster! The sound is so thick and muddy (in a good way), [...]
Comin' atcha first thing every Monday morning, it's The Pony Track, a super-fantastic short distance dedication to BadmintonStamps Collective founding member and internationally renown symbol for musical excellence Aaron "Pony" Child. No fancy links, no clever write-ups, 'cause these awesome songs don't need no splainin'. So c'mon, ride the pony!

I once sat next to Posdnuos and his lady at a performance of Topdog/Underdog starring Mos Def and Jeffrey Wright. In the middle of the first act, a voice came on the loudspeaker and calmly told us we all had to leave, not to panic, and that yes, there was a fire in the building. Once outside, I bummed Mos a light for his Dunhill through the window of his Navigator, and he told me not to worry- that we would all get rain checks for the next week; to which I responded that, [...]
