I love watching great performances or well-made documentaries featuring my favorite artists from the comfort of my couch. In 2011 a number of fantastic music-related films came out and it was nearly impossible to pick the 10 best efforts, so for 20112s list of my favorite concert films of the year, I expanded the list to 15 and there were still a few fine efforts which didn't make the cut. So with that in mind, we continue our long-standing tradition of detailing my top music-related DVDs/Blu-Rays of the year... 15. [...]

While the act of rock stars performing in front of orchestras has become much more common these days, not every musician can pull if off. Last night during his Live On Letterman webcast taping at the Ed Sullivan Theater, Peter Gabriel showed that both he and his music were the perfect vehicles to front a 46-piece orchestra. Not only does Petey Gabes have powerful pipes that easily move to the forefront, but his songs are filled with dramatic moments that the orchestra can seize upon. Over the course of close [...]

This DVD proves once again that unlike many of his contemporaries, Gabriel deserves to be referred to as an artist.

Peter Gabriel - New Blood By Stuart Anderson Although seen recently more as a music industry innovator rather than as an artist and performer, New Blood finds Peter Gabriel following in the footsteps of fellow '80s eccentric and collaborator Kate Bush and revisiting, recalibrating and re-releasing highlights from his considerable back catalogue. However, rather than merely patching up production deficiencies, unearthing previously unreleased songs or reinterpreting tracks that never really satisfied, Gabriel has rerecorded a sizeable chunk of material without guitars or drums but [...]
Peter Gabriel ’s gorgeous Scratch My Back , a 2010 orchestra-backed homage to artists past and present, has reignited the iconic artist’s creative side. While no song on that record or his latest effort can technically be called new , this is the shortest amount of time between Gabriel albums in over three decades. We're hoping we’ll see a brand spankin’ new record sooner, rather than later...but maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves. New Blood serves as a semi-sequel to Scratch My Back . The [...]
Following the example of his covers album from last year, New Blood has Peter Gabriel rounding up an orchestra to help him essentially cover himself. Last year, Peter Gabriel gave us the superb Scratch My Back, a cover songs album intended to be the first part of a sort of mutual appreciation project. Gabriel's grand plan was that his record would be later joined by another release featuring the artists whose tunes he reinterpreted, doing him the same favor with his material. However, that intended companion album has since stalled, so for his latest LP New Blood, [...]

Peter Gabriel set a strict rule for his 2010 world tour: no guitars or drums. Instead, he was backed by a 46-piece orchestra as he re-imagined his back catalog. He was so inspired by the result that he brought the orchestra into the studio and recorded 14 versions of songs from his back catalog. The result is New Blood, which hits stores on October 11th. You can stream it in full below. Read more »
Peter Gabriel - "No guitars. No drum kit." The succinct self-description of the new orchestral project from one of rock's most innovative and respected visionaries hints at what's in store with the follow up of sorts to his 2010 covers album Scratch My Back . Arranger John Metcalfe is again on hand for the symphonic transformation, this time tackling Gabriel's own repertoire of songs that reach back to his 1977 solo debut...a concert DVD New Blood Live arrives October 25 // Release : New Blood (October 11, Real World) // [...]
Peter Gabriel toured with an 46-piece orchestra last summer, and he was so stoked on the live permutations of the songs that he piled the orchestra into the studio with him to rerecord a number of his hits with new arrangements. To prep you for the release of New Blood , we've got the premiere of three songs from the record: "Don't Give Up", "Digging in the Dirt," and "Darkness." ("Don't Give Up" that features Ane Brun doing Kate Bush's part.) It's great to hear Gabriel pop back in again in a contemporary landscape as his music has generated [...]

'NEW BLOOD' Peter's latest studio album features re-imagined arrangements of many of his songs which dispense with the traditional weapons of the rock armoury - no guitar, or drum kits - the lyrics are exposed and laid bare, often taking new meaning with the passing of the years. This treatment is applied with painstaking attention to detail and stunning effect to songs including 'Digging In The Dirt', 'Don't Give Up', 'Downside Up', 'Intruder', 'Mercy Street' ' The Rhythm of the Heat' and the spine tingling, atmospheric 'San Jacinto'. Working together, acclaimed composer and arranger John Metcalfe, Peter and [...]
