Not that we had a winter this year on the East Coast, but Spring is in full bloom here in Brooklyn. Post-bloom actually, which is a good thing for you allergy sufferers. Hot Chip's new album, In Our Heads , is just a couple months away, but Al Doyle and Felix Martin have a fully realized record of their own as New Build . Along with electronic composer and studio engineer Tom Hopkins, Doyle and Martin formed New Build last year, becoming the latest in a series of Hot Chip affiliates and spin-offs including The 2 Bears and About Group. It's not easy to keep up with all the side projects of Hot Chip . While the band's new full-length "In Our Heads" is not set to drop until June, they still have time to pursue their other gigs. Having LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip in your pedigree is one hell of an ancestry, but quite the legacy to live up to. Despite the latter family tree, New Build have definitely stepped up to the plate with their debut release Yesterday Was Live.. . As one would expect, the band rules with all things disco- fat bass lines, grooving guitars, and a sheen of 802s synths. As Al Doyle immediately acknowledges, the set at the back of the shop is a tricky one to play. "Instore protocol", he rightly contends, tends to revolve around the awkward linger; about static, largely muted appreciation. Only a few shows in, Lord knows New Build could do with the rupturing of such proprieties. Similarly their brand of heavily percussive electro-edged shuffle incites, without ever inducing motional conduct: opener Mercy features the treble-soused guitars that routinely shape Hot Chip sets (a nod to the almighty Prince influence inferred quite explicitly throughout Coming [...]
