Brooklyn-based four-piece New Idea Society released their third full-length album earlier this Fall, their first since a touring accident on the autobahn in Germany left the band in no condition to record music. Titled Somehow Disappearing, the album is flush with sparkling synths and driving rhythms that carry their thoughtful, heart-felt lyrics upon ambitious, crashing [...]
Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. [tweetmeme] In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler offers a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes. After a serious crash on the Autobahn in Germany left Mike Law of New Idea Society injured and unable to play guitar, by necessity, he took to a synthesizer to write songs for their upcoming third full-length, to be released later this year. In the meantime, the band has chosen to allow fans to download their new Quiet Prism EP for free as a teaser for their new album and for a taste of their new more electronic indie-pop direction. Over the past few months, four of the five songs were released one by one by the band [...]

New Idea Society - Alibi on the Menu, Weakness on the Menu 2002 Mike Law formed New Idea society with Steve Brodsky in Boston around 2001. By the next year they recorded a self-titled EP with four songs, all of which were written in one day. According to Law, "We borrowed an 8 track that we didn't really know how to use and recorded the songs at my Dad's house, all in a day as well. I remember trying to sing really softly because we didn't know how to stop the microphone from making that [...]

A brief bio of your label: Who started it? When? First band signed and/or first release? Bonnie Schlegel started the label in 2000 to release a band The Halo Project she loved. Bonnie and I were in a band together for over four years called Bald Rapunzel. She asked me to be part of the label, then our friend Sara Klemm, who was putting out a benefit compilation for the emerging DC Books to Prisons project at the time. Now, I am the only person doing the label. [...]

New Idea Society is a band that was originally formed in Boston by Mike Law of Euclid and Stephen Brodsky of Cave In. Now residents of New York City, New Idea Society's music ranges from solid rock style songs with edgy guitar riffs to up-beat indie rock acoustic pieces. One of the band's strong suits is a knack for blending bright, catchy melodies with dark themes and brooding lyrics. A key feature of the band's early releases is Law and Brodsky's use of simplistic recording techniques, relying on their instruments to produce the desired sounds rather than using external compressors [...]

A double bill of new music tonight. First up I've got a few tracks from New Idea Society, a relatively new band formed by Mike Law of Euclid and Stephen Brodsky of Cave-In. Much in the style of Cave-In's more mellow later material, with some slightly more contemporary Modest Mousey style compositional elements added to the mix. On the other hand, there's also a nice lo-fi 'live' feel to things. The new record, The World Is Bright And Lonely is their second, and came out a week or two ago on Exotic Fever Records. I think it's pretty [...]

WHAT'S IN A LABEL: A new ongoing interview series with record label owners about what got them started, what keeps them going and what would make them stop putting out incredible records . EXOTIC FEVER RECORDS: I spoke to Katy O. about her label Exotic Fever. Exotic Fever is from the DC area and puts out some really great independent bands, ranging from melodic girl fronted post punk to pretty aggressive DC style rock. Katy was great and got back to me sooo quickly, she's my new best [...]
