It was the age of the country songwriter, with people such as Harlan Howard (Heartaches By The Number), Hank Cochran (I Fall To Pieces), Roger Miller (Billy Bayou), Willie Nelson (Crazy), Mel Tillis (Detroit City), Tom T Hall (Harper Valley PTA) and the Bryants (Love Hurts) creating many classics. Some of them would become stars in their own right. None maybe more so than Kris Kristofferson, a man whose early biography reads like a far-fetched penny novel. Many of the songs he is known for were first recorded by others, sometimes several times. With the arguable exception of Me And [...]

Cass McCombs' fifth full-length, Wit's End, is a natural progression. His early material showcased an infatuation for intricately produced psych-rock, never becoming indulgent enough to be fetishized because they were presented in a distinctive singer/songwriter format. His songs have always sounded alarmingly personal, even if the degree of distortion and pounding hooks prevented his lyrical [...]

The ownership of band names is a tricky subject, which has filled the wallets of many lawyers thanks to the dozens of lawsuits filed over the years. As the groups of the '60s, '70s and '80s start to age, many acts have had to figure out who has the right to tour under the original name. This week's B List looks at 11 groups with only one original member left in the band as of 2011. There's a variety of reasons why there's only one member left in these bands. [...]

The song selection here is from the 2010 release Georgia [...]

New Riders of the Purple Sage: Last Lonely Eagle [ purchase ] "Last Lonely Eagle" comes from the first NRPS album, when the band was practically a Grateful Dead side project, with Jerry Garcia flexing his pedal steel muscles and Mickey Hart playing drums on a few tracks (including this one). It was also around this time that the band played the middle set of many Grateful Dead shows, bookended by acoustic and electric sets from the Dead. So it's no surprise that the album slots in well [...]

New Riders of the Purple Sage : Panama Red [ purchase ] John Collins Dawson IV, nicknamed "Marmaduke", was the leader and one of the co-founders of the New Riders Of The Purple Sage. This is the New Riders Of The Purple Sage live at the Fillmore West, San Francisco, USA back on the 2nd July 1971. The group emerged from the psychedelic rock scene in San Francisco in 1969, and its original lineup included members of the Grateful Dead. After a few warm up gigs throughout the Bay Area in 1969, the New Riders (for all intents and purposes John Dawson and David Nelson) began to tour in May 1970 as opening act with the Grateful Dead. This relationship continued on a regular basis until [...]

( Editor's note: The last two Lazy Saturdays, we've gone with bands that might not be on your radar yet paired with a live track or two; you've seemed to be into that, so we're going to keep it up this week with a slight twist. The two bands we're highlighting today released records earlier this year that we didn't comment on at the time; to a degree, we're looking backwards instead of ahead. Both records, however, are deserving of praise and this seems like a good venue to heap it on them. Lastly, that's E.V. Sumner and his staff [...]

Filed under: News , R.I.P. Musician John "Marmaduke" Dawson, who along with Jerry Garcia co-founded country rock group the New Riders of the Purple Sage and wrote songs for the Grateful Dead, died Tuesday in Mexico from stomach cancer. He was 64 years old. Born in Detroit, Dawson eventually moved to San Francisco in the mid-'60s and immersed himself in the burgeoning music scene. A guitar player, he joined Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, a band that included future Grateful Dead members Garcia, Bob Weir and Rod "Pigpen" [...]
John "Marmaduke" Dawson has died . Born in Michigan, Dawson's lucky break was joining Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions. This loose ensemble also found jugband space for Jerry Garcia, with whom Dawson would form The New Riders Of The Purple Sage. The presence of Garcia ensured that the band got work and found an audience supporting Jerry's more famous concern - although it wasn't until Garcia was replaced by Buddy Cage that The New Riders took on a life away from the Grateful Dead. Dawson guested on Dead albums Aoxomoxoa, Workingman's Dead, and American Beauty, [...]

"Marmaduke", a singer-songwriter who co-founded the band with the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia , died after a long bout with stomach cancer. He was 64. For a music fan, sitting down for a cup of coffee in the East Village with Buddy Cage beats anything a trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or reading a Robert Greenfield book could possibly offer to them. Not to take anything away from either of those experiences, but as a self-proclaimed "lifelong freelancer" who for years served as Jerry Garcia's hand-picked fill-in on his original pedal steel side-project, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, and has long been known as a first-call steel player, performing on albums [...]

New Riders of the Purple Sage : Henry [ purchase ] Do they still use the term "counterculture"? At some point, in academia, and soon after in the press, someone decided that it was undignified to write about "hippies". So they came up with the term counterculture. You could read about things like "archetypal countercultural icons". But, in plain language, surely the dope runner was one of these. This heroic soul dodged narcs and border agents to bring high quality weed from Mexico to the masses. He braved treacherous [...]

Remember G.E. Smith? You remember, long blond hair, a jaw line that is kindly referred to as 'chiseled' and enough guitar playing talent to be the de facto band leader whenever he plays anything, even the radio. Sure you remember him. He toured for years with Hall & Oates. Led the Saturday Night Live Band for about ten years. Heck, I think he was even married to Gilda Radner about that same time. Played with Dylan, Jagger, and Bowie. He even led the house band at Live Aid back in '85. Yeah, THAT [...]
