And now three reasons to stop, drop and roll on over to Subterranean tonight... 1. For those that miss the White Stripes' version of nu-blues, you'll probably want to check out Champaign's The Dirty Feathers . The influence of Jack White is very apparent on their new record, Midnight Snakes , which features rambunctious rockers like "Echo Hands" and "Midnight Snakes" that offers heavy piano groove that's more in the Raconteurs territory. But The Dirty Feather can stretch their wings into different territory such as on "Blue Flame" that [...]

Remember New Ruins ? We posted about the Champaign group's last release, We Make Our Own Bad Luck last year and have been hungry for some new material. The band plays Schubas in Chicago this Thursday alongside favorites The Daredevil Christopher Wright (who are in Milwaukee Saturday ) and Southeast Engine . We've been hooked up with an exclusive download of the song "Alligator Lie," which was previously released as a 73 vinyl on Record Store Day . You can hear [...]

For those who don't know, this is the eleventh iTunes Mixery . Here's how it goes: I play iTunes on shuffle -> tell you which song comes up -> provide the mp3 and a tidbit -> continue until five songs and embarrassment are complete. Again, nothing's off-limits – I don't "fix the mix". Have a look into my life… The Shins - "Pressed in a Book " [MP3] (from Oh, Inverted World ). Well, even if James Mercer never comes back to The Shins, we still have a [...]

Its pretty crazy how much you can learn about yourself through just one person. I've been away... way too long. Lo siento. Much apologies. But here comes a new year and a new decade; get ready: I've learned that in order to see another's point of view you first have to be able to see why you have your own point of view. Its good to want things; its also good to be able to compromise. Sometimes what's best for you isn't best for the long term. Sometimes you don't realize [...]

Αρκετούς μήνες περιμένει υπομονετικά η Λίμνη των New Ruins από το Illinois στα ψηφιακά πατάρια της Χειμερινής Ακαδημίας, και απόψε ήρθε επιτέλους η ώρα της. Μελωδικό indie rock με πανταχού παρούσες τις κιθάρες, που συνοδεύονται ιδανικά από τη στιβαρή φωνή του Caleb Means · αν υπάρχει ένα συγκρότημα που θα έπρεπε να αναφέρω για να σας βάλω στο νόημα χωρίς πολλά πολλά λόγια αυτό θα ήταν σαφέστατα οι Interpol [κυρίως στο δεύτερο τραγούδι που παρουσιάζουμε, το As Far As We Know , έτσι.. ως αποζημίωση για την αναμονή..]. Το φετινό, [...]

Hey friends, I'm sorry for the lack of posts lately. I was in the process of changing hosting and it took much longer than expected. Everything is good to go now so I'll be getting back into the swing of things. So here's the June mixtape that should have been posted weeks ago. Hope you enjoy it. -- Cap SIDE A 1. The Avett Brothers - I And Love And You 2. A.A. Bondy - When The Devil's [...]

Hopefully this music will be as relaxing for you as it is for me, this being a lazy Sunday and all. New Ruins -- "Lake" mp3 off We Make Our Own Bad Luck ( buy ) Seeland -- "Call the Incredible" mp3 off Tomorrow Today ( buy ) Lazy seems to be [...]

The Illinois based band, New Ruins began as a duo in 2004 with Elzie Sexton and Caleb Means. The pair self recorded and released an LP (A Collection) and two EP's ('Build A Fort-Set That On Fire' & 'Hotter Months') before they signed to a label and released 'The Sound They Make' in 2007. The twosome eventually added a few new members to the band, Roy Ewing on drums, Paul Chastain on bass/keys and fifth member, Andrew Davidson on bass and auxiliary percussion. New Ruins recently released their third full-length album, 'We Make [...]

Oh dear god almighty I have a hangover. Fucking bastard music people. Last night there was gigging and drinking and wandering the streets of a most balmy and pleasant Edinburgh with an assortment of miscreants and other ne'er-do-wells. We saw Honeytrap and Meursault play at Sneaky Pete's - I was recording this podcast, hence late for X-Lion Tamer, sorry to both Ed and Tony - and it was fucking amazing. And after that there was drinking. Fuck me there was lots of drinking. And then I came home and went into the local all night shop and purchased [...]
![[mp3] New Ruins - "Symptoms"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1745861_lg.jpg)
"Symptoms" is from We Make Our Own Bad Luck , the recently released sophomore album from New Ruins . It's a fine example of the band's well-honed, folk-infused indie rock, and is available as a free download through emusic . My emusic downloads refresh this weekend, and this album is at the top of my list to check out when they do. MP3 :: Symptoms MP3 :: Lake (from We Make Our Own Bad Luck . Buy here ) [...]
"Symptoms" - New Ruins Evocative, echoey, and hypnotic, "Symptoms" unwinds to an irresistible 7/4 beat that manages to move with clock-like precision and yet also with that irregular seven-count glitch. The odd but resolute beat, kept largely by an acoustic guitar lick (and only intermittently by any percussion at all), works as a central focal point, a reliable ground on top of which muddier elements--the reverbed vocals, the indistinct background drone--can operate without entirely deconstructing the song. "Symptoms" feels at once dainty and rough-edged, traditional and experimental; the way the strings (cello and [...]
I consider Champaign/Urbana, IL to be a second home of sorts for me, primarily because it's the only place that I can drive to in an hour or so that frequently has good live music. So I always get excited when a Champaign band puts out great album and such is the case with New Ruins ' sophomore effort, We Make Our Own Bad Luck. I saw New Ruins open for José Gonzalez as a two-man band a couple years back , and I can say that this full band suits their rustic Americana sound much [...]

Champaign, IL continues to be a breeding ground for new musical discovery here at Muzzle of Bees. Over the weekend I finally got around to taking in New Ruins after numerous e-mails suggested they'd be my speed. It was an outstanding recommendation, which I now forward onto you. A few months ago the group released We Make Our Own Bad Luck on Parasol from which you can download the track "Lake" below. Enjoy. Buy: New Ruins [...]

Lots of new releases this week, but none that I'm particularly excited about. Though, I am a little intrigued with A Camp , a collaboration between Nina Persson of The Cardigans , and Niclas Frisk. At this point, I will pretty much listen to anything Persson is involved with. Some other notable releases include Bob Dylan's Together Through Life (his 46th album!), Thee Oh Sees' Help , Immaculate Machine's High , Still Flyin's Never Gonna Touch The Ground , and Japandroids' [...]
Prin 2007 îi lăudam pentru debutul foarte bun cu The Sound They Make , şi speram că se naşte o trupă mişto şi promiţătoare. New Ruins au revenit cu albumul nr 2 - We Make Our Own Bad Luck - care mă face să mă bucur că am crezut în ei, pentru că sună, în continuare, foarte bine. Held Up By Sand [...]
They may have coined paranormal rock to define themselves and I can see the logic given that 'Symptoms' comes from a time long since departed. I'm thinking early 90's dream pop but with a slightly frayed edge. In circumstances like this lyrics generally take a back seat but that's not to say that the vocals aren't what makes it special. And so it comes to pass that Caleb noises like he means it
