Takka This!

It's hard to really believe anything until you read it in the NEW YORK TIMES. Fortunately for us all, we can now rest easy in the thought that Indie revelers Takka Takka are a verified truth. How, you ask? Well, chief critic and oft-PBS News Hour correspondent Jon Pareles has described the phenomenon to us: [...]

Anti

Have we really become this anti-social? "...Slydial turns out to be only the latest in a breed of new technologies that fit squarely into an emerging paradox: tools that let users avoid direct communication. Technologies like e-mailing and blogging give the communicator the power to choose the time and manner of expression. Now, some academics, text messengers and creators of technologies say a

The New York Times continues walking the marching-band beat , this time with a piece on the Bath Municipal Band of Brunswick, Maine, which has been pumping out the Sousa beats since 1961. [ NYT / Photo via Bath Municipal Band ]

"New York Times" Gets In On The Drum Line [Higher Education]

BCU - Vice Versa
Good NYT piece today by Samuel G. Freedman, who reports on the spike in enrollment for Florida A&M University's summer band camp, in which some 450 students compete for a spot in the school's famed drumline corps the Marching 100. It's an illuminating look at how stylized marching bands are continuing their work into the digital age, and often enhanced by it. (Students like the Seattle teenager Freedman centers his story around often get into the camp after seeing the Marching 100 online.) It's also got some intriguing numbers: When Dr. White began the summer [...]

Beijing: The Badassest City in the World

Beijing: The Badassest City in the World Newspapers are littered with random articles about Beijing, all made relevant by the 2008 Olympics. Reporters poke fun at sloppy English translations, filth in the streets and the general fuck-all attitude of city dwellers. But The New York Times takes the cake this morning with by far the most prejudiced and badass article on Beijing I've ever read . The article is about smoking, and how even after laws were passed and anti-smoking signs hung, Beijing remains a city of smokers. One in four people smoke. Doctors smoke in hospitals. "... a 2004 government survey [...]

Where have all the ladies gone? [Heading out of the workforce]

Where have all the ladies gone? [Heading out of the workforce] From the Phlog : Today, the front page of the New York Time s declares boldly : "Across the country, women in their prime earning years, struggling with an unfriendly economy, are retreating from the work force, either permanently or for long stretches. They had piled into jobs in growing numbers since the 1960s. But that stopped happening this decade, and as the nearly seven-year-old recovery gives way to hard times, the retreat is likely to accelerate." Initially depressing? Yes. But not quite cause for despair - it doesn't [...]

"New York Times" To Madonna: Aging Is No Reason Not To Skank It Up! [Prescriptives]

"New York Times" To Madonna: Aging Is No Reason Not To Skank It Up! [Prescriptives] Today, The New York Times' style section takes Madonna to task for no longer being a fashion leader, and—better steel yourself for this one—wearing sensible, loose-fitting clothes in her downtime. It's a fairly mystifying piece, mainly because the writer seems to willfully ignore the obvious: Even if it's kinda your job, you can't remain young and ahead of the curve forever, especially when it comes to women's fashion. Madonna may be in peak physical condition and have the money and resources to appear 10 to 15 years younger than she actually is, but there's no way for [...]

"New York Times" Writer Nees A Lesson In MySpace 101 [Web 2.no]

"New York Times" Writer Nees A Lesson In MySpace 101 [Web 2.no] Of all the disastrous MySpaces I've seen, Coldplay's current page does not exactly merit a second thought. It's simple, tasteful, professionally designed, and easy to read. Perhaps the only thing remarkable about it is how good it looks for a MySpace. Yet New York Times media critic Virginia Heffernan seems to think it's some sort of menacing pariah of the online world, a crudely cobbled-together middle finger to all those who crave browser-crashing Flash from their favorite artists' online presence. Her piece in yesterday's NYT Magazine is borderline embarrassing to read if you've ever [...]

God bless the Queen of Split Ends

The Times Magazine , usually the highlight of my Sundays (especially when paired with coffee and/or the occasional Bloody Mary), has been sorta eh in terms of it's music coverage lately. Last week's profile of the freak folky sister duo Coco Rosie was fairly well-written (a tad breathless at the sisters' involvement in Paris's fashion community, perhaps), but seriously confusing, timing-wise. Nothing against Coco Rosie - I was a fan of the emotional weirdness of their last record (as I noted last year ), and they're artists and [...]

Terminal Five By N** Y*** T*****

Terminal Five By N** Y*** T***** Formerly, they were known as The Night Time. But what to call them now? Is it New York Times or N** Y*** T***** ? Well, I'll go by the spelling on their myspace page... N** Y*** T***** it is. Besides their trademark infringement-y name, they have a whole 90's indie pop girl vocals thing happening. They have been compared to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs , Sleater-Kinney , Autolux , VU , and Pavement . So, if you want me to thrown in another band to compare N** Y*** T***** to, I will. [...]

Taking Time For New York Times

Taking Time For New York Times When I popped Brooklyn based New York Time's EP into the stereo I was greeted with straight forward curb side indie rock that kicks and punches before it swoons and kisses. Thirty seconds into the first track I found myself assisting their drummer on my steering wheel as I was driving to work. By the fifth song I was chiming in on the choruses and on the second time through the EP I was thinking that this band was friggin good. Their next show is on June 20th at Spike Hill in Brooklyn. Hopefully they'll come down [...]

On The Eve Of My Departure

One year ago this week I left the East Coast for Los Angeles. It is weird to think that I have not returned home since then, not in a homesick way, but in a "Huh. I wonder what changes I would find in the city or my hometown" way. For as long as I can recall, I have been prone to daydreaming. During these past twelve months, I have often caught myself trying to picture the drives to various places I used to frequent when I was living at home. I ponder landmarks that were used to use to calculate [...]
