Mmmmm...free tickets... The third ever Dirty Weekender takes place on Carey's Lane this weekend as a wealth of homegrown talent converges on The Pavilion in Cork for four days of musical mayhem. Both Thursday and Sunday night's entertainment comes without charge which is pretty great but four days free sounds even better doesn't it? To stand a chance of winning a couple of tickets to both Mmoths (Friday, 15th February) AND Rest (Saturday, [...]

Who's up for getting down and dirty... It's all about The Pavilion this week as the Carey's Lane venue dominates the gig listings. The third annual Dirty Weekender serves up an eclectic plate with electro ( Nialler9 's Mmoths -headlined Friday), rock (Saturday: Rest 's unveiling of new studio record I Hold The Wolf accompanied by Hope Is Noise and [...]

The third annual Dirty Weekender line-up has been revealed... Doom-prog princes Rest had already announced they would hold the album launch for second full length release I Hold The Wolf in the Carey's Lane venue and now the word is out that the Saturday spectacle is to be the meat in an electronic sandwich with Toby Kaar , Young Wonder and more all bringing the beats throughout the Valentine's [...]
Since i'll be in the car for the long trek home after another great holiday, today's good is a bit different. I can't drive without listening to something. I love talk radio in the morning and music on the way home from work in the afternoon is the best. A little bit of both on long drives is my favorite. So without further ado, I'd like to give a little shout out to my favorite podcasts that make those long drives bearable (and help me discover new music on regular basis). [...]

Falling in love with new music is one life's simple pleasures and 2012 was a fantastic year of discovery for me. I've already featured a few of my new favorites this year, including Bright Moments, HAERTS, Porcelain Raft, and Vacationer (just to name a few), and today i'd like to highlight a few more. But first I need to give credit where credit is due. If it weren't for the following music outlets, my music repertoire would be far less exciting. Big thanks to All Songs Considered , Big Hassle , EARMILK , Girlie Action , Head [...]

People love lists, and people love music, and some people love music blogs, and then there are others who enjoy Twitter, and then we have a few people who enjoy them altogether. With this list though, it's not just about who's the biggest music blog or who posts the most, it's a mix between blogs who post regularly fantastic content and others who post less content to their own blog but who's Twitter game is on fire. We follow and interact with these blogs on a daily basis, and you should too. Here they are in alphabetical order. [...]
On Friday, Irish music critic extraordinaire Niall Byrne aka Nialler 9 wrote a fantastic post called "Five reasons why Irish trad has been reinvigorated in 2012". It's the kind of piece that made Nialler9 so popular in the first place, and it's wonderful to see him taking the time to [...]

We're not two weeks into 2012 yet but there has already been an enormous amount of sniping going on as regards Irish music. I realise Ireland couldn't exist without a healthy dose of cynicism but it seems that we've reached a crescendo already. First up, the state of music blogs [Read more]
Nialler9 has compiled his best free Irish downloads of 2011.
The latest Nialler9 podcast is a bit different down to the fact that there are two of us. I joined Aoife for a change for the links between tunes. Besides that it's business as usual with some...

Having got an impressive glimpse into his live set at Hard Working Class Heroes (I saw the last two or three minutes), I've been intrigued by Simon Bird , the 21 year-old Dublin-based producer from West Somerset. He has released four EPs of music on Bandcamp since November last year and there's a healthy experimental playing with the form and function that I like. While the few minutes of live set I saw where distinctly more upbeat, the fifth EP entitled V hangs in a more ambient but grand noise space. Download it at Bandcamp [...]

It's funny how two artists who probably don't know each other become connected in your brain. I found Loftmind by looking at Ifan Daffyd's Twitter where he bigged up the Marvin Gaye remix below yesterday. I was poking around the internet to see if Ifan Daffyd has released anything ( he has ) . In browsing his social network pages, he, in turn, brought me to Loftmind when he tweeted at a compliment to them on the remix. Loftmind are Joel Sinclair & Dom Flint, producers from Leeds who [...]

Last year's Electric Picnic 2010 mixtape went down so well, when it came time to do one for 20112s Electric Picnic I couldn't whittle the tracks down to one mixtape. So I decided to do two - Day and Nite . Mixtape 1 - Day represents the guitar angle, the folk musicians, the indie, the rock and everything in between. Mixtape 2 - Nite represents the more electronic side of the festival, the beats, the repetition and the remixes. An abridged downloadable version containing OK to download [...]
