Was listening to some traditional Madagascan dance music (more on that later) which then segued into this, pretty much seamlessly. Which is odd, as it's on Warp records. See Waves is flexible like that. You could start with the more progressive end of post-punk and arrive here smoothly too. It's certainly an easy journey from My Life in the Bush of Ghosts . Lots of notes here, lots of dense patterns. There's a certain '80s vibe going on, and for once I mean that as a compliment. Interesting that the [...]

This blog has been up and running for just over 2 years now and i just realised that i've never actually done a proper Valentines Day post. So here is one in the form of a Monday List. Valentines Day divides a lot of people. Some love it and celebrate it to the full with presents, dinner dates, "quiet" nights at hotels, cards, flowers and the general showering of love on their partner. Then there are those who hate (lets be honest it's usually single people) Valentines Day [...]

There are some good options for free live music Monday. First, the band Nice Nice headlines a show at the Empty Bottle and does a noon show at Millennium Park . The Thermals , who just finished recording a new album, also play a gig at Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park tonight. I'm A [...]
I saw Holy Fuck last week here at the Independent with the Portland duo Nice Nice, and left feeling like I had seen a pretty killer show all things considered. Nice Nice was a bit sonically boring even though their approach to music - a duo featuring a drummer, guitarist and a shitload of [...] Related posts: Review: Holy Fuck @ The Independent, San Francisco 8/27/09 Tonight: Holy Fuck @ The Independent Tour Dates: Holy Fuck Goes [...]

Following the release of their debut album, Latin, Holy Fuck has taken their act on the road. Joined by Nice Nice at Le Poisson Rouge, the group took the stage this past weekend and created a cordial environment. With 35 mm film synchronizers and toy keyboards in tow, a lit floor illuminated them as they spewed skewed and manipulated vocals over drums and electric guitars. During moments and breaks of improvisation, the two electronic mixers seemed to sense one another through process before transitioning to songs like "Red Lights", [...]
Getting an early start to the day... ...so I can jump out of work at a decent hour to go celebrate my sister's 30th birthday. Huzzah! She strays from twitter and ol' dat, but go check out her band, Colorform . Legit! D'y'all catch [...]

Sometimes reviews of new bands write themselves: this is an occasion where the band have written it for you and then made it into their name as well. So, Nice Nice . What more is there to add? A little more detail is probably required. Try this then: if Nice Nice are an enigma wrapped inside a puzzle, then I'm A Human Person is a solid silver sledgehammer wrapped around the back of your head. Nice Nice // I'm A Human Person [...]

Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can (* * * *) To call Laura Marling's sophomore album, I Speak Because I Can , a sign of growth for the precocious songwriter might seem to undermine her remarkably accomplished first effort, Alas, I Cannot Swim . Yet as mature as her debut certainly was, her latest record shows a definite increase in the quality and depth of her songwriting and singing. I Speak continues Marling's penchant for emotionally weighty material, and here she has the added [...]

The Edible Audible Picnic free concert series at Millennium Park announced an expanded line-up of electronic based artists that has a sharp focus on local acts and labels. The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Millennium Park sponsored events will take place at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion from noon - 1:00 p.m. each Monday starting June 7 through August 30. There also three Saturday events scheduled for July 3, 24 and September 4. Toronto based DJ Solvent was chosen as the first [...]
Last month was a big month for the spastic electronica band Holy Fuck . First they announced that they'd slimmed down to a proper four piece after two years of frantic touring across the globe with only their four-piece "touring line-up" in tow. Then, an oddball video chat teased fans with the band's upcoming plans for their junior album entitled Latin and that it had plans to debut a few of the new tracks at this year's SXSW ( YouTube search time! ). And now it finally seems that Latin has actually come [...]

Computers are bastards aren't they? Yes, they make some things quicker and easier, but we've come to rely on them so much that when they go wrong they can bring on a breakdown at the click of a mouse. Even at the very smallest level, freezing midway through typing a hilarious tweet for example, computers have a way of being aggravating that even Alan Carr would have trouble topping. Pity then Nice Nice (Jason Buehler and Mark Shirazi), who lost an entire album's worth of work due to a computer mishap. Hopefully they put a boot [...]

10PM @ XXXUSA On their way to the East Coast to open a Trans Am tour.. Nice Nice (MySpace) (of Portland, OR) Nice Nice (Warp Records) Nice Nice (Temporary Residence) Formally carrying the name Nice Nice since 1999, guitarist Jason Buehler and percussionist Mark Shirazi have been playing music together for over ten years. Their intense rhythmic dialogue heard in their songs speaks volumes about the connection between the two as they layer runaway melodies and free-form [...]

One of our top bands to look out for this year is the Radio Dept with their low-fi approach and 'radio'-friendly tracks. Wee have been looping Heaven's On Fire from the Swiss group since it ... Where do you even start with describing Nice Nice ? The only coherent themes throughout Extra Wow are an impressive pace (particularly for a record that's liable to put you in a bit of a trance) and shouty, incoherent vocals. The beats are strikingly repetitive, bordering on head-melting, and at times go right through you - if you listen to only one track you won't be too worried if you hear another or not. String it all together, though, and you'll soon find that Nice Nice are one of those bands that are all about atmosphere; that [...]
