...Burns Half As Long" (mp3s finally added 4.16.07) I apologize for the lateness of this playlist - and no I intend no pun at all there - it's just that this has proven to be a surprisingly emotional and difficult to describe Selection for me. A bunch of nostalgia is tied into this time of the year, and a lot of it got dredged up and put in the blender with current coincidences and shakeups, the end result being just a really really weird and distracting couple of weeks. But here we go. [...]
Family Tree, set to be released on June 19, will include the following unreleased tracks: (covers and additional family members included on the tracks are indicated in parenthesis) 'Come In To The Garden' 'They're Leaving Me Behind' 'Time Piece' 'Poor Mum' (Molly Drake) 'Winter Is Gone' 'All My Trials' (Nick and Gabrielle Drake) 'Kegelstatt Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano' (Mozart) 'Strolling Down the Highway' (Bert Jansch) 'Paddling In Rushmere' 'Cocaine Blues' 'Blossom' 'Been Smokin' Too Long' (Robin Frederick) 'Black Mountain Blues' (Traditional) 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' (Bob Dylan) 'If You Leave Me' [...]
I've had these tracks for a while now and thought it would be worth making them available in one place. They really are for completists only. Nick Drake didn't play much in front of others, and didn't play with others much, concentrating on recording his own songs and a few select folk-blues covers. Somehow, however, his arranger and friend Robert Kirby managed to entice him to play as

My Father died slightly less than a year ago, in New York, the city that inadvertently had become his home for approximately forty years. He has not yet, however, been laid to rest. That will happen next week. His funeral was held shortly after his death, in the Queens neighbourhood where I grew up. After the ceremony, he was cremated, and his ashes stored until My Mother could decide where they should be placed. He had not wanted them returned to Nottingham, the hometown he had left in his twenties. He had variously spoken of having his remains [...]
I have a thing or two to say concerning this, The Moon EP. I've taken to taking walks at night when I'm done with computer and television. This is a really quite a splendid practice I recommend to all of you. It's perfect lurker weather right now. Brisk. Take a sweatshirt or a scarf. Trespass a little. Whatever. All of it. The moon is a neat thing. We went there I'm sure you know. There's a
Please pardon this post if you're looking for the usual Big Rock Candy Mountain flippancy or songs about sin and salvation. A dear friend of mine has just died, and this post is for him. His name was Jeremy. He had a heart attack at the age of 34, leaving behind a wife and two young daughters. I hadn't spoken to him in a couple of years, but he never let me disappear from his life, or the
It'll be so much fun, I promise. Pinky swear.

Today is a different kind of summer than last week. Today's summer is the kind where every time you move, you sweat, so you end up sitting still for hours at a time. It's the kind where your brain melts and putting together sentences becomes next to impossible. It's the kind where your friends are somehow having fun outside playing frisbee and are about to go see Peyton Manning speak, but if you leave your fan for a second you think you'll die, or worse. It's the kind of day way too miserable for lyrics, so [...]

Nick Drake released this song on Island Records in 1969 when he was 21, having wrote it even before that. He died at the age of 26 from an overdose of anti-depressants, having finished three incredible records, none of which sold more than 5,000 copies in their first issue. Your heart just goes out to this guy, you know? This song especially sounds like it would be playing behind a hazy dream-sequence in his biopic, recalling his childhood years. Canoeing with friends in short shorts, a tire swing, his first kiss, his first family vacation... His melancholy voice [...]

Let Normal Service Resume After having the lurgy all last week, its hopefully back to normal as I finish off the curtailed acoustic week. With all the plaudits bestowed upon Nick Drake over the last few years I feel a little reluctant to make a post about an artist when it feels like I'm joining a bandwagon. There appear to be endless people I know who all say the same thing, 'I liked Nick Drake before he became popular'. Well I think all the [...]
I'm a die-hard Tivo loyalist. I've been spoiled by commercial-free television and can't imagine primetime without a fast-forward button. Still, as much as I hate to admit it, commercials have some redeeming qualities. They can be mildly funny, present a new useful product, and sometimes feature some pretty good music. Once in a while I see an ad that ends up introducing me to a new favorite artist. I can think of two off the top of my head, and they're posted below. I'm going to be watching a lot of ads these next [...]

First off...I'd like to announce the name of the big winner of the TFD Sufjan Stevens Christmas Contest. It was the first official contest on the world's busiest website, and as you can guess, we had tons of entries. We sifted through the piles of electronic mail (that's what took us so long to report it) and found our winner...can you feel the tension...the very first TFD Champion is... KIM BARRETT That's right folks, regular TFD reader, and TFD lover Kim Barrett won the big Sufjan Stevens prize pack. She lives in Halifax and goes to Dalhousie, [...]

I haven't left the house since Noon yesterday, however I HEAR that it's colder than a witch's tit out there. So for our first day of real Winter. You were always so lost in the dark Oh my god I dont think I can take much more of this. I've become morose and grouchy as the week has progressed and all down to selecting songs that will rip you apart. And you dont get any more gut wrenching than The Cure and Nick Drake . The 'Disintegration' album has always been a favourite, and with the possible exception of 'Faith' probably their best work (you can see the link I'm sure). In addition to 'Pictures of You' I also have [...]
Many moons ago I had the pleasure of setting up Oh No! Oh My!'s first actual concert. They played with the Robot Ate Me and Sure Juror and we had about 80 people show up. Not too bad. But since then they've gone on to be invited to open for ...
