MusicNow is an annual Cincinnati-based music festival created by The National's Bryce Dessner, showcasing "contemporary music and artists that take risks and do not fit neatly into categories." This year's installment runs March 28-30th and features performances by Sufjan Stevens, Philip Glass, and Dessner himself, as You Ain't No Picasso points out. Day one will feature an organ concert by James McVinnie, who will be performing new pieces from Arcade Fire's Richard Parry and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang, along with selections from Glass, Bach, Arvo Part, and Nico Muhly. The following day will feature a performance by Glass [...]
![[Introducing] – M/B](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3986769_lg.jpg)
Tweet M/B is the solo endeavor of the Toronto-based composer known only as " M/B " or "Matt" in order to maintain his anonymity as an artist. In addition to writing and composing all of his own arrangements, he also does all of the recording as well. Exclusively instrumental, the music of M/B is strikingly evocative and original. The handling of all the arrangements as well as the recording process is impeccable, and the wide-array of emotions and moods that are able to be evoked are [...]

WG Sebald: Darkness on the edge of Anglia | Boo...

photos by Richard Termine , words by Andrew Frisicano At Friday's performance, Nico Muhly warned early on that Tell the Way --a loosely tied together collection of 11 songs--would be a "casual sort of thing." He was right, for the most part; its compositions skirted around the unifying theme of travel in a range of styles: Sam Amidon 's traditional folk songs; Bishi 's eclectic, musical-theater-inspired chansons; the ever-busy Bryce Dessner 's slow-building "Tour Eiffel," with dramatic vocal swoops that [...]

Captured on June 22 2010 in London , Tim Hailand's upcoming One Day in the Life of Jake Shears book finds Jake in bed at St Martins Lane hotel at 8:15 am, and follows him throughout his day in black and white photos; showering, a BBC radio session, lunch with composer Nico Muhly , Akiko , and Jonathan Pierce of The Drums, off to the famous Brixton Academy . The images then burst into gorgeous color as Jake [...]

Nico Muhly, the contemporary Manhattan composer responsible for, among other things, the choir-boy atmospheres on Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest, has had quite a prolific year. He's lent his orchestral arrangements to Jonsi's debut solo album Go and Sam Amidon's I See the Sign , and has released two full albums of his more traditional classical works. Classical musicians who fraternize with the likes of lowly popular musicians are rarely recognized for serious compositional achievements. But Muhly has managed to straddle the two paradigms, largely through his own willingness [...]
State isn't supposed to be here tonight. Okay, it's the right show and it's the right place. Only, this was all supposed to happen back in April. That was until some pesky Icelandic volcano threw international air travel into disarray, forcing bands and promoters into carrying out some funky re-jigging of tour schedules. There was also irony in it all for The Whale Watching Tour, which is basically a supergroup comprising of artists signed to Bedroom Community , a label based in - wait for it - Reykjavik. And to add insult to injury, while ticket sales were healthy for the original date it [...]

I had some time to kill, so I sat on the edge of the Barbican's lake watching the heron. I waited for it to do something. It just eyed me suspiciously, and then went back to staring at the water, waiting for fish to appear, just waiting. Waiting. How apt. From my time spent on the South African coast last year I recall that, just like with fish, whale watching involves a lot more time spent waiting than actually watching. And, what with the volcanic ash incident earlier this year, I've spent nine months waiting for the Bedroom Community [...]
Iceland's Bedroom Community, Nico Muhly, Sam Amidon, Ben Frost & Valgeir Sigurðsson, fell victim to their own volcano when much of Europe was brought to a stand still back in April due to the volcanic ash disruptions and thusly missing the beginning of their Whale Watching Tour. The (rescheduled) Whale Watching II Tour takes place this Sunday, 26th, in the National Concert Hall and we have two pairs of passes to giveaway. You know the drill, send your name and contact details to giveaway@state.ie , with 'Whale Watching' in the subject bar, and we will contact [...]

My little brother is in town visiting, and he is the sound designer for the Boston Ballet, and on Wednesday night (I think) we got obliterated on gin and had something of a musical duel; each taking turns on the stereo, me playing some of the weirder stuff I listen to and him playing bits of classical music. Honestly, it was fucking ace. As a DJ set it would have absolutely delighted me anyway, even if everyone else ended up fucking off, but nevertheless, that evening was what music fandom is really about for me. So this podcast [...]
The subjectivity of audible beauty creates no room for uniform mastery. As styles of music have fluxed in popularity over the past several centuries, the presence of classical music has endured for several reasons. The technical achievements it marked in musical composition is perhaps the most immediate influence, as are the great minds from Beethoven [...]

Ik ben redelijk in de ban van de nieuwe plaat van Sam Amidon . Er ligt een flinke stapel CD's op m'n buro waar ik eigenlijk nog een mening over zou moeten vormen. Maar ik kom er maar niet aan toe. Keer op keer grijp ik toch weer terug op I See The Sign.

The traditions of 'Trad. Folk' are undoubtedly rooted to the core history and expression of music – songs and ballads that are timeless between generations, reinterpreted by a teller in their present, amalgamating their experience onto nostalgia carried from eras long past. It seems apt that musicians and singers in the 21st century still impressing modern experience onto these tales, carrying them between genres. I See The Sign, Sam Amidon 's fourth record, reconstructs predominantly American folk songs into an invigorated equilibrium of disruption and calm. Muted banjo and moog confer at the core [...]
