Shannon Taggart - Exorcism 2 After a little break, the current of Great Songs of 2008 continues to flow strong... including a fragile voice from Madrid, the single from Antony's latest masterpiece, the bells and whistles of a remixed Canadian summer anthem, a standout track from a huge Australian new wave trio, the awaited return of a shadowy German indie band, [...]
Bloody hell, Minehead is a different place in Spring, isn't it? I've only ever visited the place for the Xmas ATP, a time when I've needed to set fire to several minor indie rock bands just to stay warm. For this edition of the UK's premier chalet-based alternative music festival, the sun was [...]
I know, I know - two posts on The National in just two days. But this is pretty great. And yes, there was a little Nico Muhly in there.

Words by: Will Slater Isn't it nice when you find an artist who you honestly think is a genius? You know the word gets thrown around a lot, but you are certain that your discovery is the real deal. Well here's my latest: I try time and time again to delve into the world of classical, but can't really get very far with it, which is why I always feel extreme excitement when I find someone like Nico Muhly. In his late 20s, Muhly has achieved more than what [...]
MUSIC NEWS - Antony and the Johnsons have announced plans to play a series of unique concerts in collaboration with symphonies across Europe this summer. The events will presenting a wide range of material including songs from the recently released album, " The Crying Light ". The concerts will feature orchestras (36-52 players) presenting arrangements developed by Antony and Nico Muhly and conducted by Rob Moose. Premiering at the Manchester Festival, Antony has also been commissioned to create a stage environment for " The Crying Light " (buy [...]

Space opera is not for the faint of heart nor the impatient. Its paths may lead through chaos, crashing cacophony and discord, only to emerge triumphant with resolve and peace brought on by sorrow and wisdom. Thus in the great space between Sigur Rós, Nico Muhly and others, travels Flowers of Hell, an international group composing and performing all over the globe. But Flowers of Hell is not just a 16 piece space rock opera orchestra (though I could have sworn I heard a Vorlon on "Forest of Noise", the third track in their new album). [...]

After the increasing success of 2006's Yellow House , it looks like one of our favorite Brooklyn animal-themed-bands Grizzly Bear has come out of their studio recording-hibernation to announce the supporting tour for their highly anticipated new album, Veckatimest . The album, which will be released on Warp Records May 26, was produced by Grizzly Bear member Chris Taylor, and we're hoping the new album employs the signature elements of the band's experimental sounds heard on Yellow House . The twelve track [...]
by neil roberts (live mp3s courtesy of one for the good days ) Saturday night I headed to BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House to see Final Fantasy and Grizzly Bear play with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra . The only problem was, I didn't have a ticket to the sold out show. There were tons of people selling last minute tix on craigslist, and I must have written 30 emails...to no avail. So, I turned on Yellow House , smoked a joint, meditated for a bit, [...]
As I was watching Grizzly Bear play with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, I couldn't help noticing how much of their music is really defined by restrain-their passages aren't passages of growth, and there isn't an overflow of any sort, which I guess is comparable to the economy of poems: all of the little bits are born fresh and sacrificed young, before anything is allowed to grow old, ever, by the time the song is over. The band mentioned that having an orchestra allowed them to play songs that they normally wouldn't play, and while the orchestra sounded pristine, [...]

Just got an email from Insound to let you all know that you can now pre-order the new Grizzly Bear album, Veckatimest , on vinyl. Nico Muhly - who composed The Reader soundtrack - contributes to the album as well as Beach House d.a.r.l.i.n.g. Victoria Legrand. If you want some grizzy bee in the meantime, multi-instrumentalist Chris Taylor (not this guy ) plays sax on Beirut 's "On A Bayonet," hot off the March of the Zapotec press. Beach House and Grizzly Bear play SXSW [...]

DIX ALBUMS 1. PORTISHEAD, Third Comme tous les poids lourds, les [...]

As we enter into the new year, and all the hooplah of 2008 comes to a close, I would feel remiss not to throw in a couple of tracks. The first is from the one and only Ron Sexsmith, the ever youthful looking veteran singer-songwriter, whose Exit Strategy of the Soul released this year is certainly worth checking out. The second is from contemporary up-and-coming freakfolk-'classical' artist Nico Muhly, while the third track is from former Dirty Vegas lead singer Steve Smith. Enjoy. Listen to Ron Sexsmith - " Brighter Still " Listen to [...]

(image source) The October issue of The Believer includes my second interview for the magazine, this one with the composer Nico Muhly. I wanted to talk to Nico not just because I like his music, not just because he's such a good, er, talker , and not even because I admire the people he's worked with, from Antony to Bonnie Prince Billy to Bjork. Mostly I wanted to talk to him because he is 26 - and I relished a conversation about classical music with someone whose [...]

Nico Muhly, Sam Amidon, Doveman, and Final Fantasy — July 16, 2008 @ The Music Hall, pt. i Nico Muhly is one of the most brilliant, talented artists in music today; and as I have mentioned before, Sam Amidon's voice is absolutely gorgeous and All Is Well is the best album of 2008! Read my post on Nico Muhly's Mothertongue here and Sam Amidon' All Is Well here . [...]

Nico Muhly Mothertongue (05.2008, Brassland Records) Verdict = Avant Garde composition that hits, wavers and then hits again Nico Muhly's follow up to his stunning solo debut Speaks Volumes, which came out last year, is simultaneously incredible and bewildering. To be honest, it took me a good long time to digest and weed through this record. Unlike Speaks Volumes ' individually composed tracks, Mothertongue is made up of three separate suites constituted by ten tracks and is intensely conceptual. Throughout the first suite of music a chorus of vocals is manipulated and fluttered [...]
