Nicolai Dunger is one of those names you hear around, though one that never really building up a portfolio of fervent press attention. Not that this is for the want of trying - Play is his sixteenth album (although some sources list fewer). He's worked with Will Oldham, Mercury Rev and Calexico, and after a few years of genre excursions, this is his first 'pop' market record since 2004. For a back to basics approach, Dunger strips away all those references and accroutrements for a rootsy, largely acoustic in the round setting. As such, Dunger's immediate influences [...]
I cringed when I was asked to put together a list of my 10 favorite albums from the past decade. My shortlist had nearly four times that many. How could I possibly narrow it down? So instead of going through that torturous weeding out process, I decided to compile a list of ten records that I feel didn't get the attention they deserved.

Musicians Pay Tribute to Judee Sill, 70s artist you may not know about; but you should.
The railroad still enjoys a storied place in our society despite the fact that its heyday has long since passed. This can largely be attributed to its continued presence in popular culture, especially in film and music.

Judee Sill was a singer/songwriter from Oakland, California. She was the artist signed to David Geffen's Asylum label, and during the 1970s, released two highly acclaimed studio albums on it. This music eventually caught the attention of such acts as Fleet Foxes, Warren Zevo, and Graham Nash, all of whom have recorded or performed her material, but not before Sill died November 23, 1979 due to a drug overdose. She was 35-years-old. November 23, 2009 will mark the 30th anniversary of Judee Sill's untimely passing. To commemorate the occasion, American Dust will look to honor [...]

Best. Norwegian vampire movie. Ever. And I am not even a vampire movie kind of guy...this was just a beautifully made movie. And that is about as much of a review as you will get from me. How about some music? I am feeling Scandinavian... * Nicolai Dunger - 'Soul Rush' MP3 * Dungen - 'Panda' MP3
A few weeks ago while in Austin, a group of us were discussing Bonnie "Prince" Billy's new LP Beware - a conversation that soon shifted to Will Oldham related side-projects. Among other titles discussed was Swedish singer/songwriter Nicolai Dunger's 2003 album Tranquil Isolation. While by no means his first rodeo, the LP served as my [...]
Here are a couple old tracks from Swedish singer-songwriter Nicolai Dunger . He's a former professional soccer player that was discovered by a music producer while he sang on a balcony in his hometown. Shortly after being discovered he gave up soccer to pursue his passion for music. Early in his career Dunger drew comparisons to Nick Drake and Van Morrison. Christmas is coming and kids are having fun (so said the chorus of my fifth grade play " Shaping Up Santa ," for which I still know all the words and thankfully no longer have to wear the green elf costume). I have a love/hate relationship with this time of year because of the overabundance of really bad, synthy, jingly, repetitive Christmas music that bombards me at every pass. But tonight I was listening to my friend Dainon 's superb radio show out of Salt Lake City and he filled two and a half [...]
Swedish singer/songwriter Lesli has a new album called "Sleepwalkers lament" out this week and you can now preview a few tracks at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/lesliso ngs Reminds me a bit of old Nicolai Dunger or other similar 70s-style troubadours. Very warm and natural.

Strangely, the first Calexico song that really made an impression on me was their cover of Love's "Alone Again Or" from the 2004 covers EP, Convict Pool . Calexico - Alone Again Or I was fortunate enough to see Love before Arthur Lee passed away. What a show that was! In keeping with the bizarre world of NYC concert-going, David Fricke , Kurt Loder and Steven Van Zandt were standing next to me the entire time [...]
I keep meaning to tell you how good the new Nicolai Dunger album "Nicollide and the Carmic Retribution" is, but it keeps getting pushed aside. It's a difficult album to distill to a single track, not to mention that I'm still struggling to wrap my head around it (in a good way). So for now you'll just need to take my word for it and investigate on your own as today I'm posting the title track from what remains to be my favorite Nicolai Dunger album, "Soul rush" . It's a perfect piece [...]

Ok, so I am sure a lot of you are already familiar with Nicolai Dunger , the Swedish singer but if you aren't, here is a chance to get a few tracks from his, in my opinion, greatest record to date, Tranquil Isolation . This record was made in 2003 with Will Oldham aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy , and has some of Oldham's usual contributors on it, as well as Will doing quite a bit of backing vocals and accompaniment. This record has a really nice [...]

Welcome to the first installment of Oeuvreblogging , a new column in which - inspired by some of the fine folks doing the same thing for songs - I'll attempt to write about every album by my favorite bands, one at a time. I'm starting with Nicolai Dunger , whose catalog is perhaps too formidable, but future artists will include obvious ones such as Elliott Smith, Ryan Adams and some surprising lesser-knowns as well. Consider this the Rawkblog's very own All Music Guide [...]
