My Morning Jacket will join Preservation Hall Jazz Band , Joseph Arthur , Nicole Atkins , River City Extension , Tangiers Blues Band and special guests for a Hurricane Sandy Benefit at Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, NJ on January 2, 2013 : "Following Hurricane Katrina, the response from around the world was overwhelming," say Ben Jaffe, creative director of Preservation Hall Jazz Band. "Now it's our time to give back to a devastated community where many of our friends, family and supporters call home. In New Orleans, we turn [...]
Musicians and celebrities pay tribute to the music of Tom Petty while raising money for Hurricane Sandy victims.

"This is a lot of Alpha energy to wrangle," Guster's Ryan Miller said in testament to Alex Levy and the Cabin Down Below Band's work last night. "This is a hard thing to organize." And that's probably true of most every tribute concert of this nature, as it has probably been true of the decade of Petty Fest's preceding last night's. But for this debut Los Angeles installment, the nature of those Alphas was distinct, peculiar, and fitting the environment. The NYC jam last month had Devendra Banhart. Last night had Johnny Depp in a feathered hat for six songs. [...]

Nicole Atkins has released a re-recorded version of her song "Neptune City" to benefit her native Jersey Shore in its relief efforts to overcome the destruction from Hurricane Sandy. This version of "Neptune City," which originally appeared as the title track on her debut full-length on Columbia Records, was recorded with Lucero pianist Ricky Steff at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, TN, engineered by Matt Ross-Spang. The track is currently available for download at neptunecity.bandcamp.com . All donations received ...

Nicole Atkins is selling a new (re-recorded actually) song to raise money for her hometown of Neptune City, NJ, one of the many areas hurt badly by Sandy. In her own words: I originally wrote and recorded this song in 2006. I wrote it about my feelings on the town i grew up in, Shark River Hills and Neptune City. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy and after seeing the destruction it has left for my neighbors, friends and family I decided to rerecord the song for everyone to raise money to help us rebuild. [...]

Jody Kivort I'm not diversifying into the adult entertainment industry, despite what some ads that occasionally get served here might imply, but am instead talking about New York's Escort . Sometimes a lean five-piece band, sometimes a proper orchestra numbering as many as 17 - but always fronted by diva Adeline Michele - Escort have been busting out old-school yet thoroughly contemporary dancefloor disco electro-soul since 2006 but only just released their full-length debut Escort earlier this year and are now taking their legendarily slick and irresistibly fun live show on [...]

photos by Chris La Putt The Jayhawks at Williamsburg Park - 9/15/12 The Jayhawks played a free show at Williamsburg Park on Saturday (9/15) with Chris Lee (with Steve Shelley on drums) and Nicole Atkins and the Black Sea . It was the last US show for The Jayhawks before they head over to Europe next week. Williamsburg Park shows continue with Gotye, Givers, and Zammuto on [...]
Seems odd to call any week a banner week for Bob Dylan , but the current seven day span just may qualify. The legendary singer-songwriter not only celebrated his 71st birthday, but also was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama at the White House. If that wasn't enough, the life and music of the iconic and influential bard was celebrated over the course of two nights at New York's Irving Plaza with the annual Dylan Fest organized by Rolling Stone scribe Austin Scaggs. Now in its [...]

It started out as simple way to honor the life and music of Bob Dylan , by Rolling Stone editor Austin Scaggs at his favorite local East Village bar, but over the course of a decade Dylan Fest has become an annual raucous event that's a must attend for any Zimmy fan. Now in its tenth year, the two-night event will celebrate Mr. Dylan's 71st birthday on May 24 (his actual birthday) and 25 at New York's Irving Plaza, with another impressive roster of musicians that includes Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith (Dawes), Matt Vasquez (Delta Spirit), Nicole [...]
A.C. Newman, Nicole Atkins, and Rhett Miller cover Leonard Cohen for Columbia Records' 'Old Ideas With New Friends' series.
Nashville PBS affiliate WNPT airs an eight episode marathon of Sun Studio Sessions today on NPT "2" (Comcast 241). The first episode airs today at 1pm with Nicole Atkins and the Black Sea. Nicole has appeared on Conan O'Brien and David Letterman and her debut record hit #20 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Paste Magazine aptly described Nicole's music as a "unique blend of rootsy-folk and

Vanessa Heins It's gotten to the point where the Tuesday before an album is officially released is as much a day to look forward to as the day an album is actually released. That's because it's standard practice these days to make any record anyone might care to buy available to stream at least a week before its official street date - it theoretically helps offset downloads of leaks, gets the promo cycle revved up, all of that sort of thing. It's a trend I'm fully in favour of. And based on this, it [...]

MUSIC REVIEW: Kate Tucker - Ghost of Something New EP (Noise Trade) - I'm going to tell all you manly men types with your new mustaches and hippie cologne. You would not want to leave this girl for fear she'd write a killer song which on first listen would turn you into a puddle of salt. So fair warning. Lucky for you she mixes it up a bit on her most recent EP but still delivers sultry alt country angel tinged vocals that are truly aspirational. The shining light of alt-rock maybe. You can be brave [...]

trespasserswilliam.com The new year is traditionally held as a time for fresh starts and new beginnings, but it can also be a symbolic time for drawing things to an end or perhaps more appropriately, wrapping up something to begin something else. Not that that was the only reason it wasn't a complete surprise when Seattle duo Trespassers William took to Facebook this week to announce that the band would be shelved for the foreseeable future. Despite completely winning me over with their second album Different Stars [...]

Chain & the Gang @ Secret Project Robot in Feb ( more by Harriet Roberts ) Like many other venues have been doing, Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg is hosting a Jonathan Toubin benefit which is taking place on January 12 . The benefit's got a stacked bill including Chain and the Gang (whose frontman Ian Svenonius DJ'd a JT benefit at Zebulon on Christmas Eve ), Eleanor Friedberger [...]

With Christmas out of the way, and the year almost over, it’s time I finally get around to compiling my Top 20 albums of the year of 2011 (in fact, there are 21 entries). Each album is represented on the mix with a song, and each entry has a link to the artist’s homepage or other outlet where the album can be ordered from. Because this list is intended not only to show off my impeccable taste, but also to showcase artists, all data files in the mix have been downscaled to 128kbps. This is not really a chart, but [...]
Don't you love Christmas music? I'm Jewish so mostly it makes me feel like I'm in a mall. But don't you love malls? I've been trying to get my daughter to listen to The Nutcracker , and that's been pretty easy because she's only three and doesn't have a choice. But if Tchaikovsky's not your speed there are always new XMas jams from indie rockers to keep you in the holiday spirit. Once again we've collected this year's additions to the canon since it should only be a Sufjan Christmas so many years in a row. (And once again [...]

We all love lists, and we all love sarcasm. Though, I think its important to reflect upon the last year of music, I'm going to do so through the use of a list. It was a fantastic year full of awesome albums, and I'm going to count down a bunch of my favorites, and give you something to listen to while reading. 35. The Elected - Bury Me in My Rings The Elected - Go For The Throat Blake Sennett (Rilo Kiley), made his way back into music with [...]

The trouble with acoustic covers of popular songs is that some earnest singer armed with a guitar will slow down Jingle Bells and whisper the lyrics as if they have a deep meaning. I have no principles that compel me to disallow the notion of whispering songstresses, but on this Christmas mix I’ve tried to keep them to a respectful minimum. Still, we have the doses of yuletide angst which the acoustic genre prescribes to go with the upbeat welcome of the merry season. Don’t be alarmed by the inclusion of three tracks called Christmas Song: they are [...]
