Today, as I'm about to book my next travel adventure (Dubai! Berlin!), and after reading, pondering and reconsidering my friend Rob's Facebook list of his Top 10 favorite cities (Paris all the way up at No. 3? WTH?), I'm inspired to revisit some of the places I've already been. I couldn't begin to rank my 10 favorite in order, so instead, I'll tackle the far less daunting task of highlighting some of the bests and worsts (and mosts and leasts) among them. City I'm most likely to fall in love [...]

I recently found myself on another confusing date, the kind I've been on semi-regularly over the course of the last three months, during which I've been single and emotionally unattached for the first time in Melbourne. Is it me or have the guys around here gotten hotter than usual in 2013? I've never been much of a dater, and I'm still not, but it's hard not to indulge when you're constantly surrounded by tall, handsome men who are actually hitting on you . Who, me ? I still have to check whenever one of them [...]

The first thing you need to know about Chan-wook Park's "Stoker" is that no, this is not a biopic about Bram Stoker, the writer of Dracula . This film has nothing to do with vampires or the supernatural. However, like the works of Bram Stoker, Park's "Stoker" has a gothic thread and elicits the same creepy tone of classic supernatural stories. The big twist here is that these are regular human beings that are doing dreadful things without remorse and that makes them scarier and more hypnotizing than any made up creature. [...]
starring: Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode, Jacki Weaver screenplay: Wentworth Miller directed by: Chan-wook Park MPAA: Rated R for disturbing violence and sexual content. A father dies, and his estranged brother comes to stay with the grieving widow and bereft child. “Hamlet” this is not, but in “Stoker,” director Chan-wook Park and first-time [...] The post Film Review: Stoker appeared first on Spinning Platters .

With a name like Stoker you may be expecting a vampire horror flick. Instead, Park presents us with a film that’s part murder mystery, part gothic fairytale and part erotic thriller. At its core, this is a deeply perverse film. The essence of Stoker is the loss of innocence – specifically, that of India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska). When her father dies, her uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode) unexpectedly arrives on the scene and [...]
The multi-instrumentalist Emily Wells announces the first details of her European album release. Further the Brooklyn girl reveals her involvement in the soundtrack for new Park Chan-Wook film, Stoker . 'Mama‘ is the name of her new release, which is coming out 3rd June on Partisan Records , as a special double album package featuring the full record, and an entirely acoustic recording the album. It’s the follow-up to Emily Wells‘ 2008 debut, The Symphonies: Dreams Memories & Parties [...]

Okay, I'll admit it. For the past week, Australia's Nine Network has been showcasing promos for the upcoming second season of the Oz version of The Voice incessantly, and every time I get a glimpse of the judging/coaching panel -- which includes Ricky Martin, Seal , Good Charlotte Joel Madden and Delta Goodrem, the lone Aussie pop star -- I think to myself, "They couldn't do better than that ?" Joel Madden [...]
After a long, slow torture at the hands of late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, Matt Damon finally put him in his place last night. Which, in this case, means duct taping Kimmel to his office chair with a gag in his mouth while Damon hijacks his show. Jimmy "running out of time for Matt Damon" has been a running joke on his show for years, but this time Damon made sure he had time by taking over the set with his own flare while Jimmy received heat from all the guests that were welcomed on the show (including [...]

I promised myself I wouldn't spend Boxing Day 2012 watching a movie about a deadly real-life disaster that happened on Boxing Day eight years ago, set in Thailand, the country I've called home for much of 2011 and 2012. But it was either The Impossible or The Hobbit , and as anyone who knows me also knows, I don't do Renaissance faire/Dungeons & Dragons adventure fantasies, or whatever you want to call The Lord of the Rings and all of its current and future offshoots (none of which I've ever seen or plan to ever [...]
starring: Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, John Cusack, David Oyelowo, Macy Gray written by: Lee Daniels and Pete Dexter directed by: Lee Daniels MPAA: Rated R for strong sexual content, violence and language Imagine Godard directing The Help as a swampy psychosexual murder mystery and you might come close to picturing the oddity of [...]

Dark photos by G. Nicole Kidman During the 2012 New York Film Festival, actress Nicole Kidman was being honored for her achievements in film (yeah, I was just as surprised), prior to a screening of her new film "The Paperboy." While I thought Nicole was a good speaker, I think most of her films suck. Don't get me wrong, I loved "To Die For" and "Moulin Rouge" was good for one viewing only, but "the Hours" seemed to drag on for that amount of time and [...]

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook , best known for his Vengeance Trilogy and the iconic Oldboy , makes his English-language debut with Stoker, which stars Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Dermot Mulroney, and Jacki Weaver. If the movie came from anyone other than Park , I'm not sure I'd be interested because it looks like a typical psychological thriller, but obviously the director has more up his sleeve. "After India's (Wasikowska) father (Mulroney) dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and [...]

Welcome to The Great Debate, a feature that asks you to argue for or against one of two opposing film-related elements. You will make your case for why you think one element is better than the other. Please note that this week’s debate contains spoilers, so if you have not seen either film you may want to do so first. Let the debate begin! Best twist ending [...]

War is hell, and so is divorce, which, I suppose, can be likened to the final stage of a war, which, if both sides are lucky, involves no bloodshed. There are no victors on this particular battlefield, but when the opposing sides hail from Hollywood, the rules of engagement, marriage and divorce are always subject to change. The latest celebrity declaration of war -- er, divorce: TomKat, aka Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes , who are ending their marriage of five and a half years, with Holmes reportedly seeking sole custody of their [...]

I've had hot guys who cook on the brain lately, thanks to the TV show of that name. It appears to be Top Chef meets The Bachelorette -- without the bachelorette and with a cast of hunky guys from around Asia -- and it's about to premiere on the Universal channel in Bangkok on June 25. I'm not sure whether Hot Guys Who Cook is trying to appeal to fans of cooking shows, or non-fans, like me, who can now tolerate the likes of Top Chef [...]

No actor who becomes famous playing air guitar in his underwear while lip syncing to Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock and Roll" is supposed to still be a star nearly 30 years later. So how is it that near the top of the Hollywood firmament, Tom Cruise -- who, at 21, helped immortalize the 1979 Seger hit in the 1983 film Risky Business – is still shining. And dare I say it? For the first time in what seems like [...]
