Andre Lipke Andrew Lipke , Nicole Reynolds , The Bailey Hounds , Levee Drivers and nine other Philly bands have covered Bob Dylan songs on a new compilation called Dylan 70: Philadelphia Pays Tribute To A Legend . The album is a celebration of Dylan's 70th birthday. Download the album here . Below, listen to Andrew Lipke's cover of "Just Like A Woman," "North Country Girl" by Nicole Reynolds and "All I Really Wanna Do" by Anna Christie (of Sisters 3).
Nicole Reynolds is a simple solo indie folk singer whose voice almost aches with experience and wisdom despite sounding extremely young and innocent. Hailing from Pennsylvania, Nicole has released 3 albums in the last 3 years, her most recent record being Unordinary Mine, and each track makes me feel like I do when I watch Wes Anderson films - her songs can be stark and chock-full of understated
So here comes the weekend! Baltimore has some sweet happenings that I thought I'd mention. The Ottobar has Longwave, Colourmusic, and the Payola Reserve while the Recher Theatre has the Drive-By Truckers. Down in DC the 9:30 Club has Lionize and The Players while the Black Cat has Junior League Band, Hoots and Hellmouth and O'Tasty. Also don't forget that Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears are playing the Rock and Roll Hotel . Not too far from there in Vienna, Virginia Nicole Reynolds plays Jammin Java with Chris Pureka and [...]

Tonight in Baltimore there's one beautiful moment of music about to occur. That would be Wilco performing at the Lyric Opera House. Enjoy it if you are attending. Up in Philly unfortunately if you don't have tickets to the Ted Leo/Cale Parks show at the Barbary you're out of luck because it's sold out. Luckily Philly's Tin Angel also has some great audio for you with Rebecca Pronsky, Lucy Wainwright Roche, and Nicole Reynolds. mp3: Nicole Reynolds - When We Meet Again mp3: Cale Parks - Age Of Reform [...]

Into Theresa Andersson 's second song, I knew that she would be a tough act to follow, especially once a majority of instruments were cleared from the stage and only three acoustic guitars and three microphones were all that remained for both Tobias Fröberg and Ane Brun . Fröberg's set came after Andersson's and completely changed the atmosphere of the Tin Angel. He was slightly awkward, which I would attribute to the cultural differences and slight language barrier (it was very cool to hear Tobias (Toh-bee-us), Ane (Ahn-ee) and Theresa speak Swedish with each [...]

John Adam Weinland Shearer, or simply Weinland, worked for years in a floundering mental health system. I read this after I had given his upcoming LP, La Lamentor ( Badman ), a couple of spins, but the pain and torment of those lives he was intertwined that is sewn throughout this album is hit me immediately. Many, including myself, hear flares of Neil Young and tones of Elliott Smith echoing throughout Weinland's songs which is probably the greatest complement any song writer can get. Still Weinland has his own voice...wavering yet smooth...definitely [...]

It's the first of the month...wake up...get up...go see some shows. The question is...which one? Well here are your options. In Philly there are two super sweet concerts. The first being National Eye, The Sw!ms and Pepi Ginsberg at Johnny Brenda's . The second is Sarsaparilla, Famous Lovers, Nicole Reynolds, and Alex Rodes at the Fire . In DC there are also two super sweet shows. The first is Exit Clov, Army of Me, Good Night States, and The Dance Party at the Rock and Roll Hotel . The [...]
The quiet guitar and soft-vocal trilling of Nicole Reynolds' voice illuminates the opening track " Here Right Now ", from her second album (to be released this month) entitled, This Arduous Alchemy . The daughter of a family of steelworkers, Nicole - who grew up in Pittsburgh, PA - took music in school where she completed a major in jazz guitar and composition. It was her family's steel-working background, however, that inspired much of what was originally used for material on her solo debut, Wolves Won't Eat Us , in 2006. Although " Wolves Won't [...]

Plajia is a Montreal based, ambient rock band, with diverse influences such as: folk, 60's and 70's music, space rock, Motown, contemporary pop music, progressive and classic rock. At the risk of sounding ignorant or stupid, I can't for the life of me figure out how to promounce their name. Play-jee-a? Plah-hee-a? Anyway, I'm liking the song "Dummy." It's got a light feeling to it and it's got a great beat. Check out some of the other tracks below. Dummy Beautiful Explosion Beating [...]

I wished I had learned about Nicole Reynolds before I did my post last Friday ( Non-Guilty Pleasures from 2007 ). Because she certainly belongs on a best of 2007 list somewhere. This Pennsylvania musician plays a blend of jazz-folk a la Erin McKeown. Not only does she handle song-writing duties like a pro, she also manages and maintains her website (link below). This young folkster is more proof that Philly is the hottest city for music right now. Listen: Nicole Reynolds ~ In [...]
