Tweet Follow @acidjacknyc [Photos by acidjack - the band and recording are much better than these photos] Last time we saw Seattle's Night Beats they blew us away with their energy and ability to delivery a set of straight-ahead garage rock full of songs you'd remember the next day. This show at Glasslands found them in the familiar spot of opening for another critically acclaimed band - in this case, Iceland's Dead Skeletons - and Night [...]

We're back with part two of our Austin Psych Fest Preview . The festival gets bigger and better as the weekend goes on. Saturday packs a full day of music and film screenings from 1pm all the way into the wee hours of the morning. Sunday's lineup starts a bit later (allowing some hangover time) with the first acts going on at 3pm. As promised, here are some of the acts you won't want to miss on these last two days of psych fest. SATURDAY | This is the longest day of the [...]
GRAPHICS BY SARAH HEINEMANN Festival season is upon us, and it's time for my favorite one of them all, Austin Psych Fest. It's still a relative baby, only in it's sixth year, but boasts a line-up that proves it's here to stay. For the first time, the event is moving out of a traditional venue and into the great outdoors - Carson Creek Ranch to be exact. They now offer weekend-long camping, the perfect way to really soak up those psychedelic reverberations. Bands don't start until the afternoon, giving you time to recover each morning before diving [...]

Every SXSW ends up with the same dilemma for a writer, of how to really enjoy one’s self and see good bands while still writing down what you see. And the answer is that you can’t be in all places at all times. So it was with a heavy heart that I missed the Grand Ole Echo showcase so I could interview Dead Angle and eat some deliciousness at Counter Culture. I tell ya, nothing lightens a heavy heart like some jalapeno cornbread. One [...]

Blogger wouldn't let us use more than 200 characters in our labels, hence this second post, as promised. What a bunch of characters Blogger are. And just look at poor Brown Recluse down there, its Play arrow all wumpy-jawed. Sheesh. (Hope you enjoy the music, though.) Even given the unbridled energy and unrelenting waves of crowd-surfers, Saturday night's show at the El Rey Theatre was not the wildest concert we've seen Ty Segall give. Still, the Bay Area garage-rocker gave a scorched-earth hour-plus of tunes on a night that saw the supporting set by L.A.'s Bleached sealed with a kiss, when a fan clambered onstage and planted one on Jennifer Clavin. Pangea and Night Beats set the tone for the evening, which was boisterous. May recess never be over. Photos by Carl Pocket

Photos by Debi Del Grande Crazy good times at The EL Rey Saturday night with kids stage diving, moshing and crowd surfing the second Pangea took the stage. This was a strong lineup if you wanted to just let loose. Night Beats was a nice surprise and with guitar strings broken from the start, it didn't matter - sound was tight. Waiting for the time when Bleached headlines as they have been opening for everyone this year. And the man of the evening, Ty Segall did not disappoint with his buds by his side, Mikal Cronin and [...]

Now this is what you call a stacked line-up: Night Beats , The Mallard , Cool Ghouls , and The Woolen Men , all playing together at Brick & Mortar this Friday night. It promises to be a seriously psych-rockin' good time. Plus, my man Al Lover will be DJing between sets, so you know shit will be gettin' trippy, with no let up. And we want to send you and a [...]

JD McPherson performs at Neumos on Saturday photo by Brittney Bollay A limited but fun calendar this week, starting with Yuni in Taxco, The Torn ACLs, and The Groundblooms at Sunset Tavern on Monday night. On Tuesday, Ty Segall, Night Beats, and Sandrider are at Neumos. On Thursday, Lavender Diamond and Shelby Earl are at Sunset Tavern. The weekend kicks off with a Tribute to Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music , hosted by Greg Vandy with Baby Gramps, The Horde & The Harem, [...]

Now that the Fall Fundraising Drive is over here at the station (thanks to everyone who donated), Rocktober marches on with another great week of shows ahead. On Tuesday, everyone's favorite Gossip plays at Showbox at the Market, and on Wednesday night Das Racist plays there too. Thursday night, Admiral Fallow is at Tractor Tavern. Friday is definitely the busiest night out with a ton of great choices, including the third annual Reykjavik Calling , a free show presented by KEXP with Icelandic artists Apparat Organ Quartet , Sudden Weather Change , [...]

[photos by acidjack] Seattle's Night Beats keep it simple. With a sound whose most obvious reference points are Roky Erickson-style Texas psych and garage rock, the three piece's no-bullshit live show has gained an ever-increasing following. A look at who they've toured with - bands like the Black Lips, Black Angels, the Strange Boys and even Roky himself - tells their story pretty accurately. This show at Knitting Factory may have been on a Monday, but that didn't slow down the dancing or thin out the crowd, who got to enjoy a very strong [...]

The Black Angels + Night Beats Mr. Smalls / 08.08.2011 / $15 / Doors 7:00 pm Words by Brendan There are some bands that I just never hesitate to see. Any time they're in town, I'll make the trip to catch them live because I'll just be kicking myself later if I didn't do it. The Black Angels are a perfect example of such a band. I was so excited that they came to town a couple years ago for [...]

The UFO Club are the teaming up of The Black Angels’ Christian Bland and Night Beats’ Lee Blackwell and they have released their 1st single, “July”. The son is a hazy, atmospheric take on 60’s pysch. Luckily, things never get too weird, and the warping vocals are the perfect easygoing tool for your Monday. The self-titled debut record will be out August 13th. You can pre-order it here .
