The Los Angeles underground has always been a sprawling, gnarly place, and a new collection titled "Beat L.A." goes where few covers albums have gone before. The project — from Narnack Records and Greatmind Records — is a charity effort benefiting Doctors Without Borders and that organization's relief efforts in earthquake-torn Haiti. The compilation (out Aug. 2) sees artists from L.A.'s indie present covering songs from L.A.'s punk past, and with some remarkable results, especially Devon Williams' "Yellow Pills" (20/20), Imaad Wasif's "Go Insane" (the Doors), Josh Klinghoffer's "Anymore" (Thelonious Monster), Night Horse's "Lie [...]

Win tickets here ! They speak to us from deep [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News myspace.com/nighthorsemusic While the fire marshal outside the bar was busy writing a citation for exceeding capacity on Friday evening (March 18), Night Horse was busy inside turning the packed Headhunters patio into a roiling sea of chaos at the Tee Pee Records showcase at SXSW in Austin, Texas. There's no stage in the tiny bar, which meant the crowd was practically on top of the band [...]
It's an embarrassment of riches on the show scene tonight: ► Oh, the memories: Lou Barlow has assembled a version of Sebadoh (with Jason Lowenstein and Fiery Furnances Bob D'Amico) for the "Bakesale/Harmacy Remembering Time Tour," marking the re-releases of the 1994 and 1996 albums, respectively. They hit the Troubadour tonight, with Quasi opening. ► Shadow Shadow Shade's exhilarating residency at the Satellite comes to an end — the L.A. septet tonight is supported by / the Silver Lake Chorus and Twilight Sleep , as well [...]
Top shows to consider tonight while giving deep thought to why bands pepper us with breathless press releases for something so mundane as naming an album : ► The all-local lineup at the Autry Museum features an interesting mix, including Lord Huron performing with the Calder Quartet. Abe Vigoda headlines, and Gamble House also supports in a show that starts early (7 p.m.) ► San Francisco psych-rockers Young Prisms — their debut album "Friends for Now" just out on Kanine Records — play the Satellite, with [...]

Los Angeles band Night Horse teamed up with producer Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Pearl Jam, Isis) for its upcoming LP, Perdition Hymns, which is due out August 3 via Tee Pee Records. Night Horse plays stoner rock at its best on album track "Rollin' On," which has a slow tempo, the crudest bass line and dirtier [...]

A little Thursday wake up with a new track from Night Horse titled 'Rollin On' which just premiered on LA Weekly. The song is from their upcoming album Perdition Hymns due out August 3rd. It will also appear on a free Night Horse EP titled Sympathy Ain't Free , which will be made available on June 15th. Fans can download the EP by signing up to the Night Horse email list on the band's website.

L.A.'s full blown rock 'n' roll outfit Night Horse is set to release its sophomore album Perdition Hymns August 3rd through Tee Pee Records. The album was produced by Matt Bayles (Pearl Jam, Mastodon, The Sword). If the stuff on their MySpace is any indication, Perdition Hymns is going to slay. The quintet has some killer guitar work, a great set of pipes in singer Sam James Velde, and definitely knows what rock 'n' roll is. And although they might be a straight shooting rock band, they know how to jam (e.g. the last [...]

That's the tip of the iceberg on a [...]

by beatmasterspeech (LA)My new year's resolution is to post more LA show picks rather than attempting for my first choice of trying to receive oral exploration on each ride at Disneyland... in one day. So with that said, let's hop right to it. NAMM* has rolled into town this week, which is a good and bad thing. Tons of shows BUT tons of industry type crowds floating around. We all know the type:
Photo by Rich Gilligan . Below you will find the fourth annual countdown of the top 30 Irish albums as voted by readers and commenters of this blog. There are some surprises in there to me. The number one album on the list actually won by a fair few votes. In a year where there was no clear favourite, it's interesting to see such an album top the list. A few of the albums charted quite highly considering they were only released in the last month or so. Anyway, I hope you discover [...]

Have you ever stood five feet away from a napalm explosion during the height of the Vietnam War? That's pretty much what standing in the front row at an Entrance show is like. As the band took the purple-lit stage, bassist Paz Lenchantin gave drummer Derek James a high five and they both smiled, as if in on a secret. I figure that's pretty much what I'd do before every show if I was about to play these songs live.

That annual collision of people, pavement and pop music known as Sunset Junction is upon us. The two-day street fair may very well be on its last legs — I frankly don't know what to make of all the political wrasslin' — so I vote that we just enjoy it while we can. At 20 bucks (unless you got the $15 tickets in advance), it's a good value. Bring sunscreen, mix in some water, be polite. After the jump, my very rock-ist take on the lineup (full lineup here ): Photo of the [...]
Straight out of the heavy music mecca that is Providence, Rhode Island, Howl kick so much ass that it's not really funny but actually rather serious on account of the aforementioned painful ass kickings. Relapse recently released the band's self-titled three-song EP, which is streaming at Howl's MySpace and available to purchase here They're [...]
