If you've been following this blog, you already know how much I love The Church, aka - the band that never released a bad album (well, Gold Afternoon Fix wasn't as good as the others but it has its moments). The main reason that this band sounds fresh and exciting after all these years, is [...]

What better way to kick off your Friday than with a selection of the best tracks from the It All Started archives? If I'm honest though, this is really just an excuse for me to repost all those tracks that I love and that you may have missed the first time round. It's high quality stuff, and there'll be more this time next week. Enjoy! The Hanging Tree - Nightjar | myspace Blessing In Disguise - [...]

Today's ReviewShine artists both have a common connection. Each of these artists can be linked to Kasey Anderson ... an artist I've featured here recently. We start with a band from Indianapolis called Nightjar . After posting my interview with Chip Robinson and Kasey Anderson, I received an email from Nightjar songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Chris Hess. Hess, like Anderson, was a former resident of Bellingham, WA and described himself as an admirer/rival of Anderson's from their time in The Evergreen State. Hess moved to Indy [...]
![Song, By Toad [Label Spotlight]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2336423_lg.jpg)
Song, By Toad Records is a little label introduced to me by friend and FensePost favorite Jon Rooney ( Virgin of the Birds , Abandoned Love Records ). It all began as a blog based in Edinburgh which, like this blog, posts album reviews, various features and podcasts (coming soon to this blog). With each release containing between 300 and 500 handmade copies, the label, like the blog, is devoted to supporting their local scene but isn't above giving a [...]

I do try and avoid shilling for the label on this blog, because no-one wants to read a twice-daily sales pitch, but I reckon it's okay to have a look forward at what we've got planned for the year. That's what the new year is for, really, isn't it? So I've got a nice big release schedule drawn up, just like real record labels do, and honestly it scares the shite out of me. I can pretty much plan out my free time for the whole of the next twelve months just looking at it, but there are [...]
So then, only three and a bit weeks to Christmas! But never mind that, it has been another cracking month of tunes on MM - here are some of the best we've posted in November. Folk, Country, Lo-Fi, Electro, Garage, Blues, and Indie in equal, excellent measure. If you don't have them yet, download, put 'em on a mix CD and enjoy or give it to someone for Christmas. As ever, check the labels on the
Head over to Song, By Toad to download two gorgeous new songs by The Sea Is Salt, a new project featuring one half of Nightjar .

This is the second of today's introductions to other projects by people in Song, by Toad Records bands. Nightjar's The Moth Tra p, Toad Records' first full release, was the work primarily of Andy McKay of the now sadly deceased Celebrity Chimp, and an Edinburgh gentleman by the name of Jack Richold. Nightjar itself was just a one-off project, but Jack of course has continued to work on his own things since Andy moved to London. One such project is The Sea is Salt, which is a partnership between Jack and a young lady called Faith, whose [...]
We have been meaning to post about all of these bands with some sample tracks for a while now. So, rather than continue to be well meaning, but ultimately ineffective in our efforts, we have rounded up some of the best and most interesting of them for your perusal below. Listen, enjoy and then buy if you want to support them!Golden Bloom released their album Fan The Flames back in August when the

When we were out in Italy on our holidays Mrs. Toad and I had very few CDs with us but one of them was an Uncut compilation of prison blues and murder ballads which, amazingly, given the very promising subject matter, really wasn't very good. In fact, it was rotten, so I've made a podcast based on the self same concept, but with what I personally think are vastly better songs. Most obviously, to my mind, there were very few contemporary songs in there, and I thought that was a little weird. Now, I actually think that the [...]

Barbequtie @ Boogaloo Sunset Alligators : Where Does It Hide Learn More And Buy Catching up with the adventures of online acquaintances, websites and blogs is now swallowing up more time than is actually spent posting material here. I feel you could almost compare our surfing habits to painting one of those huge suspension bridges with a cheap one inch brush, waiting for the whole damn thing to dry and then adding an slightly darker second coat. Maybe a [...]

This Christmas lark has really thrown me. It's taken me over a week to drag myself out of my Christmas stupor and find the enthusiasm to begin writing proper posts again. It's quite strange - all year I dreamed of being able to ditch my work responsibilities and just have time to write properly and now that I'm on holidays I find that all I'm capable of doing is reading other blogs through glassy eyes and buying t-shirts from Threadless . (I wouldn't follow that link if I were you - that damned site is bloody addictive). [...]

I have finally got around to adding a new member to the blogroll - of this ever elusive list of who's who... ;-) and so I have with Song, by Toad! I have mentioned in the past that I enjoy this certain blog by the Toad (mentioned here ) and I was oblivious to the fact that Song, By Toad is a distributor of great music. You may say, "big deal, we already know that" but he in fact is a label as well as a great blog. Best of both worlds some may think, I just [...]
The United Kingdom's Antiqcool has a knack for taking a familiar musical path and fine-tuning it with excellent harmonies and precise guitars. Sometimes a solo project, sometimes a collaboration; no matter, the music is atmospheric, laid back and smooth. Self-described as "The Police arrest Fleetwood Mac defended by Crosby Stills and Nash in Simon and Garfunkel's Crowded House"; classic. We'll be featuring more from the band in the near future. Antiqcool - mp3: Already Late • [...]

Nightjar is another band signed to Song, By Toad Records that I love. Seems the Edinburgh music scene is a little more Appalachian than Scottish at the moment. Nightjar in particular would fit in well with Old Crow Medicine Show , Felice Brothers , and The Avett Brothers . Their rustic six-song EP The Moth Trap will be released on December 5th, and features Kris Drever. The opener "The Hanging Tree" is my favorite on the EP, though it's difficult to [...]

Yet another bl**dy scotch indie/folk/whatever band! There must be something in the water up there, as this is the latest in what's becoming a long list of great albums to emerge from that neck o' the woods... Nightjar set themselves apart from the rest of the pack by presenting a much more stripped-back, rootsy sound. You could almost be forgiven for thinking it's of Appalachian origin, such is the strong bluegrass flavour that tints most of the songs. The Moth Trap has apparently been kicking around for quite a while, [...]
