There was a lot of great live music heard at Johnny Brenda’s this past Friday night. It was Nightlands, Ape School, and Our Griffins on the bill. Friday night was one of those nights when I took a chance on some new music and I actually walked away very impressed by what I heard. Friday night I finally got to witness a live performance by Our Griffins and…I LOVED IT! Up until then I had only enjoyed Our Griffins’ music in a recorded format. Maybe I’m too much of a music enthusiast [...]

Nightlands play a hometown show at Johnny Brenda's tonight, backed by a choir and supported by local bands Ape School and Our Griffins . Dave Hartley's "dream science" solo project released its latest LP Oak Island earlier this year after he closed out a multi-year tour with his main band The War on Drugs. For tonight's show, he'll be performing with choral group The Sighborg Singers, who were featured on Oak Island as well. Tickets and information for tonight's 21+ show can be found here . So, you haven't been paying attention to pro hoops this season? Fear not, I have. Here's what you need to know: Lebron James is really good at basketball. If you stopped caring after Michael Jordan retired, here is your reentry point. Lebron is currently enjoying a level of sustained dominance we've only seen from Michael Jordan (if you don't believe me, check out the advanced metrics ), but in a totally different way. His preposterous speed, power and finishing ability gets lots of deserved ink and SportsCenter real estate, but it's the little things [...]
I Fell In Love With a Feeling [...]
Olivia Malone Some weeks, the inbox is a veritable cornucopia of interesting concert announcements for acts big and small. Compiling the blog posts that collect those up is a genuine delight. And easy. Generally so easy. This was not one of those weeks. Indeed, most of the news was of the "support announced" variety, which isn't necessarily uninteresting - sometimes it's more interesting than the headliner - but it is less easy. Anyways, we'll kick off with New York's
Below is a new music video from Nightlands , a.k.a. Dave Hartley, for the track "Born to Love" off his latest release Oak Island . It was directed by She Policeman (who was inspired by Andy Warhol and the song, itself), using footage from another video filmed with an old VHS camcorder. Nightlands also just announced a string of headlining dates that will make a local stop on Friday, May 31 at Johnny Brenda's. BTW: Send out some good vibes to Hartley this weekend because he'll be competing at the Professional & Amateur Pinball Association's 2013 Match-Play Championship [...]
I am tentatively exploring an alien planet, having left my spaceship parked somewhere in a desolate clearing and ventured into the misty jungles that surround it. There is a delicate hint of a footpath ahead, trodden by some ancient intergalactic people, and I follow it deeper into the swirling forested landscape. Ahead, a wall of vines prevents me from seeing any further and I slowly push them aside to reveal the sights that lay beyond. A scenario like this would ideally be sound tracked by Oak Island, the second album by Nightlands. [...]

Nightlands Supported by Ape School & Our Griffins at JB’s May 31
This upcoming Nightlands show should require a pillow to enter. The multi-talented Dave Hartley transports listeners to the place just between dreams and sleep with free-flowing choral effects with ambient noise. In fact, that's where he came up with most of the ideas for Nightlands' tracks: recording inspiration that came to him in REM cycle. However, his most recent release Oak Island finds him wandering a poppier side of music, but it still feels like poppy fields are scattered throughout the landscape. (BTW: I heard that there might be some live choral arrangements this evening.) Opening [...]

Watch Dave Hartley get covered in facepaint in the Nightlands video “Born to Love” (playing Johnny Brenda’s on 5/31)
If you've seen the album art for Nightlands' new LP Oak Island (or any of its attendant promo photos), you'll know it involved a shirtless, silver-paint-covered Dave Hartley looking like a homesick extraterrestrial navigating new surroundings. Which may be a metaphor for Hartley the ubiquitous bassist venturing out on his own in an increasingly ambitious ... Continue reading
