For the first time in - dare I say months? - I took a friend's music advice and it led to me stopping by Amoeba to pick up a new LP. This happens very infrequently. Alas, the album - Excavation by The Haxan Cloak - was too good to pass up. I know I don't typically post [...]
Last year's for ostland by elusive NYC-based experimental project Nihiti was one of the truly surprising efforts in the ever-expanding field of dark-ish electronics that employ bare, reduced beat structures as the foundation for a raw blend of industrial, noise, and drone, with a result that you may or may not want to dance to, probably depending on your level of substance intake. Now, album standout "Ghosts and Lovers" – a bleak, menacing and nearly beatless take on Marissa Nadler's song of the same name – has received the remix treatment by a bunch [...]

Tweet Beneath the noise, rubble, and gloom of last year's for ostland , Nihiti allowed the occasional glimmer of pop. "Ghost and Lovers" in particular, saw the group looking to less experimental realms for a post-punk reinterpretation of Marissa Nadler's song by the same name. Now, NYC techno mainstay Mark Verbos has gotten ahold of their version, and brought it even further into from its source by surrounding the track's baritone vocals with synth stabs and a propulsive dark-rave beat. While Verbos never removes the Nihiti's dark cloak of dread [...]

As the week comes to a close, we gather up the pros and cons with a bit of hope and optimism despite the odds. Chief Keef's gun range Pitchfork interview cost him 2 months in juvie for violating probation while Meyhem Lauren struck back at the 'fork with the diss track, "The Laurenovich Angle (Fuck Pitchfork)". While word has it that Lil B will not be performing at the Grammys, the legions of Radiohead fans can hear unreleased material Thom Yorke dropped via Dazed Digital while...

nihiti shy away from categorization like a vampire from sunlight. Their new record, for ostland, contains disparate elements of doom metal, post-rock, noise, drone, ambient, and more, unified by a systemically bleak central vision. They're the type of band often saddled with adjectives like “mysterious” and “unclassifiable”– descriptors that could be could be seen as a cop-out if we were talking about almost anyone else’s music. Yet, as diverse as nihiti's influences are, “sun shatterer” still stands as an outlier in the soot-covered soundscapes of for ostland . As clearly-intoned lyrics evoke apocalyptic imagery, nihiti sound [...]

New York's nihiti have dropped a dirty and wickedly great tune, 'Ghosts And Lovers', their first since last year's LP Faced With Splendor, via Lo Bit Landscape. A simple beginning belies what is to come on this track, as it grows heavier and harsher by the second. There are two surprising aspects to this track and band, one it's a cover of a Marissa Nadler song (read our article on her here [...]

It's time to check out a bunch of the tracks I have not posted recently. These are just a few of the songs that would get their own individual posts here on GIMME TINNITUS if I only had the time. Here is the next NOT POSTED mix. Listen. Downloadables: Where Are The Cities (mp3) by Rayon Beach Wait For Us (mp3) by Mind Spiders Do Right (mp3) by Milk [...]
Some dark and noisy sounds coming off this newly released Nihiti track, "My Fantasy Has Gone Too Far." I'm not sure what the specifics of this fantasy are, but it sounds pretty twisted from the industrial combination of bang-clang percussion unsettling synth drones. Check out the previous track to drop from this new album, " Ghosts and Lovers ," too. The project's forthcoming album, For Ostland will be out on May 27th.

My Soundcloud Picks of the Week: Let’s Get Cultured Edition w/Noble Oak, Squadda B and Yalls, nihiti, War, Skeleto n Zoo, Amarante and BeachesBeaches, Young Wonder and SertOne, and Monster Rally & RUM TUM Little history lesson on Dre. I studied art history in college and grew up taking in the arts in as many forms as possible. Lately though, I’ve been too busy/lazy/shitty to go to galleries or read up on any art. I want to start doing that again. I wanted to share one of my favorite art sites with y’all today as a result. [...]
It's been a while since something of this style really hit me, and I'm not sure if the project that created this song, nihiti, will do something like this again anytime soon. The reason being other tracks on this group's SoundCloud are much more acoustic by comparison . So not only is this track overbearing, noisy, and emotionally crushing, but it's a Marissa Nadler cover, too . With a simple electronic beat, rattling tambourine, and some funeral march-inspired chords, this track sounds like something that would find it's way onto a Giles Corey or Have A [...]

We thought we had a hold on Nihiti after hearing their 2010 debut album, Other People's Memories . It was a fine release, electronics and ambience in equal measure. But the group are back with something different, and it might just give them the attention they deserve. Their Faced with Splendor EP (released this month on Lo Bit Landscapes) had the group heading back to the studio, but leaving the synths at home?? It was time Bowlegs got some questions to the excellent Nihiti: Bowlegs: Your [...]

nihiti (purposefully lowercase) is a NYC psych-folk duo, and their cover of "The Orchids" by art rock vanguards Psychic TV is my pick for track of the week. The original version is so lo-fi it's barely audible, but the cover double tracks the vocal, which almost sounds triple tracked with added echo, to make sure the listener can understand each and every beautiful lyric. "And in the morning and the night, I fall in love with the light." The cello on top with violin underneath adds even more sweetness to an already tender song. Fans of everything from Califone to [...]

The Q magazine awards are literally laughable: insomuch as I literally laughed at the list of utterly predictable winners of their 'awards', which one suspects are awarded by a man who has been locked in a room with the same 10 records for the last 15 years. Generic, all-encompassing award for Coldplay ? Check. Obligatory nod to U2 ? Check. Devastatingly, soul-crushingly obvious spurious award to Lana del Rey ? Oh yes . Today, official ANBAD mascot, Alex James, awards Q Magazine - the music magazine that time forgot [...]

mp3: Nihiti - Pinko Morning Nihiti are probably one of the most mysterious and compelling bands working in New York right now. In the short time from their sprawling and epic ambient debut LP Other People's Memories to the stripped down elegance of recent ep Faced With Splendor , Nihiti have shown a unique diversity within their dark world of sonic landscapes. We thrilled and honored to have these guys at our first of three CMJ shows this week, Wednesday at Tandem Bar, Bushwick. The [...]

A few months ago, Nihiti put out a song named "The Ringing In (The Sun Is Rung)" and I became a fan of the vocal resemblance to Arcade Fire . This month, "Pinko Morning" is a hit with the release of Nihiti's first music video. It is also the first work from Perfect & Orbicular Productions, and directed by the band's Andy Xue. This video is a haunting love story with a couple and a knife. You can either put the pieces together or watch it below. Download: [...]
