![FUCK YOU IRENE [PLAYLIST]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3681268_lg.jpg)
Hurricane Irene has made her way up the East Coast, and is hitting the fine city of New York. In my frustration and free time simply sitting around, I have made you a very special playlist of new music that you can stream/download so that even when your power goes out, you can continue your listening. Enjoy the music and get your Jenga , Monopoly , Life , Scrabble , Risk and/or Sorry! on. Enjoy the music and please stay safe. [...]
Saturday Night Underwater - Nik Freitas Having just finished a tour with Avi Buffalo , Los Angeles local, Nik Freitas , recently released a new video for the title track off his album Saturday Night Underwater . It follows Freitas as he skateboards around town and paints in a rather unqiue fashion. The video also includes footage from his performances at The Satellite in Silverlake, California. Released in June by Little Record Company, Saturday Night Underwater was completely written, performed, and recorded by Freitas and is his fifth full-length [...]
Nik Freitas , the singer-songwriter and sideman extraordinaire (he's played with Conor Oberst and Broken Bells and on records by Miles Kurosky of Beulah, Jason Boesel and All Smiles, among others), added a healthy dose of keyboard shimmer to the warm folk-pop on his fifth full-length, "Saturday Night Underwater." The album came out in June on Pierre de Reeder's Little Record Co. imprint, and the video for the title track finds Freitas engaging in a couple of his other passions, skating and visual arts. Have to admit, "Saturday Night Underwater's" melody line is as breezy as rolling downhill. [...]
![EELS, FUCKED UP, AVI BUFFALO [SUGGESTED NYC CONCERTS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3596453_lg.jpg)
Now that last week's sweltering heat is out of the way, it's time to venture out of the AC and get your music fix. It's a solid week of indie music here in New York City with Fucked Up , Mountain Man , Eels , and Gang Gang Dance in town, but the show that stands out most to me is Avi Buffalo and Nik Freitas at Rock Shop in Brooklyn. These acts are both fantastic and the venue is tiny. Enjoy a another fantastic week [...]
Tonight's touts: ► Portland rockers Portugal. The Man are doing it right on the day their new album "In the Mountain in the Cloud" is released. Entry into the El Cid show is free with proof of purchase of the new album. Meanwhile, that's the video for the new song "Got It All (Can't Be Living Now)," above. ► Shadow [...]

The Sweet Hurt , CMG & We Are the Night and Paul Layton also perform (first set at 9:15). ► The Little Record Company's residency continues at the Satellite (each of the artists on Pierre de Reeder's label headlines [...]

Like his Rilo Kiley bandmates, bassist Pierre de Reeder has stayed busy since the L.A. indie-rockers last released an album in 2007. To inventory: Jenny Lewis has released a solo album, and then last year's "I'm Having Fun Now" with Jenny & Johnny; Blake Sennett emerged this year with new Elected album, "Bury Me in My Rings;" and Jason Boesel unveiled his solo record "Hustler's Son" in 2010. De Reeder's solo album "The Way That It Was" came out in 2008, and since he built and operated a recording studio that has hosted the likes of [...]

Nik Freitas: Saturday Night Underwater Nik Freitas is a member of Conor Oberst's Mystic Valley band and a member of the performing band for Broken Bones (the James Mercer/ Dangermouse collaboration). His own music, which he plays all by himself on this, his fourth album, comes across as a hybrid of these approaches: Oberst's wordy singer/songwriter set-up (Freitas is also perhaps a less angsty version of Elliott Smith) combined with the more electronically-enhanced pop produced [...]

[ download ] [tweetmeme] Songwriter Nik Frietas takes an anachronistic approach to songwriting, penning surefire radio hits for a bygone era. His compositions are robust with the classic pop tropes of 1970s AM radio-warm vocal harmonies, plaintive piano figures, and classic song structures complete with sunshine dappled bridges. However, with its droning keyboard notes and digitally delayed chords there are contemporary flourishes present if one listens closely enough to the production. On "Saturday Night Underwater," the title cut from Frietas' forthcoming fifth LP (slated [...]

As Bowlegs read through the Nik Freitas musical CV we became quite excited – this man has played with some big names, ranging from Broken Bells to Bright Eyes. He is also a seasoned solo artist – this is album number five – the first being released back in 2002. Yet as the FM-friendly vocal sweetly breezed across the wafer-thin acoustics and electronic, tip-toeing beats, the impressive CV evaporated: rather rapidly. Think Crowded House doing an intimate set in your lounge – which is probably too small for drum-kits and amps, so they bring in the drum machines [...]

I probably got loads of emails about Nik Freitas ' 2008 album, but I didn't listen. Not sure why. He's back in 2011 with "Saturday Night Underwater". The album drops in June. From what I hear and read, this will be a great "summer" album. Listen: Nik Freitas ∞ Middle Go see him on tour: 5/25/11 – Oakland, CA @ New Parish ^ 6/1/11 – Boise, ID @ Knitting Factory ^ 6/6/11 – Aspen, CO @ Belly Up ^ 6/8/11 – Santa Fe, [...]

If you came of age in the early nineties like I did, you'd be hardpressed not to be a fan of powerpop. At the time Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend , The Posies Frosting on the Beater and any number of records from The Smithereens were all commercial and critical hits. I've never really lost that love for tight, concise pop. Nik Freitas is one of the modern day practitioners of power pop or you might want to call it perfect pop. Nik's new record is called Saturday Night Underwater . [...]
