"I let the drums do the talking" I've been sort of rediscovering 80's pop star Nik Kershaw now that his breakthrough debut album, Human Racing , has been reissued as one of those fancy two-disc remastered sets . While the first disc is the album we're all familiar with, the second one is full of remixes and bonus tracks. It's a remix that I want to highlight today. Drum Talk is one of my favorites from the album as is, but this extended version just makes it that much sweeter. It's not [...]

Thinking of record stores not long ago , I realized that I didn't have a chance to frequent indie record stores until college (at that point, there were a half dozen within a few blocks of each other). Though my friends and I spent a good deal of time trekking to Cincinnati in high school, we usually stuck to the malls. The malls had everything we didn't have in our hometown - record stores, book stores, arcades, food courts, escalators - in one place. And a lot of girls. (there were, obviously, girls in [...]

I went to see Nik Kershaw play a solo acoustic show in Holmfirth a week or so back, and was reminded yet again of what a brilliant songwriter he is. There were evidently people there who only wanted to hear the classic hits, proceeding to talk through everything else. For me, his most consistent work emerged with his comeback in 1999 with the 15 Minutes album, but I guess that one passed most people by. The show was a nice mix of old and more recent, the biggest surprises of the night being the inclusion of Faces and Human Racing [...]

Isn't a lavish celebration of the anniversary of a compilation album pushing the idea of 'a very special birthday' a little far, even for ITV? Regardless, they spun the 'useless female presenter' wheel, selected Denise Van Outen, and threw a show to mark the 25th anniversary of the first Now That's What I Call Music compilation. On television. To be fair to ITV, they did at least invite back original artists to do their songs - normally, they'd have got Jamie Cullum and the Sugababes to have a crack at Hey You The Rocksteady Crew. But the format [...]

This is one of those songs you hear in some obscure club or at a "hip" restaurant but have no idea where it came from or who sang it... WE are here to tell you that MAGAZINE 60 is one of the most underrated band to come out of the 80's FRENCH pop scene of all time. don quichotte Not only is song rad by todays standards... its an "ace up the sleeve" of any DJ who prides themselves on their hidden new [...]

Nik Kershaw and his video for Wouldn't It Be Good used to haunt me as a child . I even seem to recall wearing my oh-so-80's white blazer and wandering the suburbs of Redwood Shores like a tormented soul. That is until our WW II vet neighbor, Mr Fight (yes his real name) saw me and said 'NOW what are you doing? Sigh. Get the hell off my lawn.' Belgian indie-electro rockers Soulwax (AKA 2 Many DJ's) leave the drum machine at home for their semi-unplugged cover [...]

Nik Kershaw is brushing down his snoods and preparing to tramp along the comeback trail, according to, erm the bloke who's done his website : Neil said working with Nik was a pleasure and that he could not be further from the preening, prima donna pop star stereotype. "He's just a nice, down to earth guy who cuts the grass and cleans the pump in the pond like everyone else. "He's definitely not a 'star'. He's just a normal person who happens to make music for a living." [...]
