You know an album is good when it grows on you with every listen. The same can be said about certain musicians with every time you listen to one of their songs. Both are how I feel about Zola Jesus and her latest album Conatus . From the very first time I heard about Zola Jesus I was intrigued. Not just because of her awesome name, but because of what she sounded like. Around 2009 I first heard about Zola Jesus when my indie and hipster friends told me to check [...]

Last year was all about Summer . This year it was quite the opposite. So once again, instead of doing a songs-of-the-year list, our list focuses on what we picked up to be the dominant trend this year. Cos we're all about being hip and relevant. Here are some of our favorite weird dark gems and year round winter hits. Light Asylum – A Certain Person + Dark Allies Forest Swords – If Your Girl (Aaliyah cover) [...]

Glasser is the solo project of Californian chanteuse Cameron Mesirow, who recorded much of her debut EP and the following 7" on Garageband. She refined and rearranged most of these songs for her debut record Ring , released earlier this month, and first track "Apply" is a perfect introduction: it's as sweet, sensuous, and slick as the rest of them. In a world (blogosphere?) where you can –- thank God -– find ghostly, haunting electronica delivered by powerful-voiced, talented women whose vocal ranges might not encroach on Mariah but are impressive nonetheless around almost every corner (see: Tamaryn, Zola [...]

Picture by Diane M. "J'ai besoin de l'hiver. Car pendant que la nature se repose, l'esprit, lui, peut entrer en ébullition". - Jan Svěrák - L'hiver est bel et bien là, c'est un fait (enfin pas officiellement, mais les températures parlent d'elles même). J'ai l'impression que c'était seulement hier que j'écrivais mon article de playlist estivale. J'ai donc décidé de rassembler dans cet article tous les morceaux que j'écoute en ce moment. Que les morceaux soient nouveaux ou pas, il s'agit de toutes les musiques [...]

21-year-old Nika Rosa Danilova (of Nika and Rory (we love), of Former Ghosts, etc.) has a cold, stately voice, half opera-star and half eighties synth-goth heroine – listening to her music, you can see her in Victorian garb crooning melismatic arias and you can see her belting out her wistful, powerful ballads in music videos that recall Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" ( the white dress version -– trippy reflections and an intrepid lack of gravity seem to fit Nika's general vibe). Have you ever even imagined anyone like that? Her forthcoming four-track EP Valusia under [...]

This ain't so new to me, but after catching Zola Jesus on Saturday at Glasslands , I went into obsession mode and dug up these treasures from late last year and it's high time we all give 'em a little love. See, ZJ is one part Nika Roza Danilova, which in turn, is the former half of Nika + Rory [...]

Nika + Rory is goth-pop mastermind Nika Roza Danilova, better known as Zola Jesus , and her touring bandmate Nick Turco; together they churn out warm, synthy, auto-tuned summer jams that seem to diametrically oppose the dark and distant work with which Danilova has made a name for herself. That's not to say that Nika + Rory's small but promising oeuvre is pure mindless pop – it's smart, bright, far denser and more considered than most other chillwave contemporaries. Start with " I'm Not Going Anywhere ," Danilova attesting her love in a haunting, auto-tuned yowl over spiraling, [...]

Back in November I played a track called "The Choice" by Rory Kane. Turns out the name of the group is actually Nika+Rory and thanks to the always excellent No Conclusion we have a bit of info: Rory Kane a.k.a. Nick Turco is a member of Zola Jesus' live band and he got Zola Jesus a.k.a. Nika Roza Danilova to sing on his new song LA SUXXX (The Choice). So, I had the group and track name both wrong. Sorry about that. [...]
